upgrading from X1 to X2 - will x1 remain intact?

Hi:

I am interested in upgrading from sonar x1 to x2. I'm currently working on a project in x1 and wish to keep using it to finish the project. If I install x2, will it overwrite x1, or will x1 remain intact so that I can keep using it? Thanks.

X2 is a seperate installation. X1 will remain intact, unless I'm very much mistaken!

Sonar installs of newer versions do NOT adversely affect prior installed versions, so there is no problem to have X1 and then install X2 and/or X2a.  X1 will remain blissfully ignorant of the whole thing, and both will live happily on your system.

Yep, it will remain intact. You can even run both at the same time if you have two audio interfaces.

From the horses mouth...the installations will remain separate however:

    1. You want to think about your VST and Project file system arrangements in advance.

    2. You probably do NOT want to install X2, see if it works, then uninstall X1. For the nuts and bolts of why not, see item 1.

Yes.   You get a warning when you open projects created on a different DAW version..... something to the effect that everything might not work properly..... there could be missing plug ins and such things....

I ignore that and proceed. Everything works fine... forwards and backwards.

Well, the above warning does not happen if you open a project created in a prior version of Sonar in a newer version.  It only happens when you open a project created/modified in a later version of Sonar in an earlier version.

If you think about it, that makes sense, as newer features would potentially cause changes in the structure and nature of saved data for a project, and older versions would certainly have no awareness of any such structural changes in the saved data.  Hence, the warning.

The fact that you have not suffered any ill effects from ignoring the warning is great, but certainly not applicable to all situations.

But, to the original question - Sonar DOES maintain forward compatibility, so that any older projects opened in newer versions WILL work fine, as long as the paths to any plugins are intact between the 2 versions.

scott, why in the world would you want to run x1 and x2 with 2 separate audio interfaces?i have 2 delta cards, but i don't see why i would want to run x1 and x2 at the same time?

I don't know. Just for fun, I guess.

I am unable to get Rhapsody to register its serial number.  I had it working fine on x1 but in X2 it tells me to put the serial number in but the cut and paste won't work, neither am I able to type anything directly into the fields.  Any ideas?

methodman3600, did you launch as administrator?

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.
