usb midi keyboard
I have a akai MPK mini with one out, a usb to the computer. There is no midi out. I have a2i2 focusrite usb soundcard, no midi in or out on it. I don't know why there is no sound, what is a midi computer with no midi out. How do you make sound with it. it seems as though nothing is happening. Randy Mader

Welcome to the forum Randy. You aren't providing enough information for people to answer your questions, but hang in there. Somewhere along the line, the output from your keyboard will be the input for a software synthesizer and the output of the soft-synth will be a sound card that is connected to speakers somewhere. The keyboard is probably using the MIDI protocol over the computer's USB port. There is probably a host program somewhere that will handle wiring your keyboard to a soft synth. Being as you are on this forum, I'm assuming that you have one of the Cakewalk programs for this (Sonar - Music Creator?) often referred to as a host or a DAW. What software are you trying to use? If I don't ruin my marriage on this deal. we have an anniversary today of meeting. we have a sitter but I was planning on getting this done. So I have already messed things up pretty bad. Producer X1. I am to the point to where I will need to walk away from this. Till tomorrow. I am also at the point where I need to hire someone who is an on phone expert who is available on weekends or hire this out. I have to have things work to work on projects that are business related, I can't miss, it has got to hit. When I set down, got to work the first time. In 10 years I will have a little more time. anything else. Now it is making midi movement on the software but no noise. So I am lost. Randy

Plug the keyboard into the computer. Select a MIDI track and set that track's input to the keyboard. Go to Insert at the top and select a software synthesizer. Once the synth is inserted, set the MIDI track's output to the soft synth and the synth track's output to the Focusrite. Play the keyboard. Do you hear anything now? There are extensive help files and several tutorials with your program, and thousands of videos on the net. Have you gone through the tutorials any?

Generally, the MIDI-keyboards that only use USB-connection usually/often also need a driver of their own. The ones with MIDI-connections are next to plug'n'play.

I have got it to the point to where the I am supposed to rout the synth output to the focusrite. I have no idea what to do at that point. I do not understand. this is ridiculously frustrating. nothing. junk absolute junk. waste of my time. I need help. I guess I will call cakewalk tomorrow. this has been the most frustrating thing I have dealt with in a long time. I have had lots and lots and lots of frustration but this is absurd. thanks again.

Ok what does it mean to set the synth output to the focusrite? I don't see anywhere on the track to do this.

this has something to do with routing- the softsynth I have no idea what that means. I am back to thinking the thing to do is set up a contract with someone who can work me through this stuff on the phone. anyway, some advise would be awesome. Randy

Specifically, what soft synth are you using? When you inserted the synth, did you select the following: MIDI Source Track First Synth Audio Output (this one is where the sound gets from the synth to Sonar) Synth Properties Page (this is where you select the sound that will be produced by many synths) Do you get sound from Sonar at all? Have you tried importing an MP3 or a wav file to an audio track?

really the only output is the MPK midi. Like I said, I get readings of volume in sonar but no sound So I have no idea what MIDI sourceftrack means. First synth audio output. synth properties page. Where is all of this stuff? oh yes thanks I will be audio only from here on out till I can find the responsible parites and blah blah blah. most absurd waste of time I have seen in six months. Horrible and I will get help. Randy

The Focusrite should already be set as the output, but press P on the computer keyboard to bring up Preferences. Ensure that the Focusrite is listed as the Playback Device and the Recording Device. Find Driver Mode and change it to ASIO. you may have to close and re-open SONAR for the new settings to take effect. Each audio track and bus will have an input and output, here labelled I and O. The TTS-1 soft synth track is output to my Saffire, but I could also choose any of the buses listed. You may have to expand the track to see all the parameters. You may have to select All at the bottom. Ignore the colored squares. As far as sending the sound to the headphone outputs of your Focusrite, that would be selected in the Focusrite's software, not in SONAR.

So have you gotten sound from anything at all in Sonar? I gather you have not actually inserted a soft synth into your project? The Insert Softsynth process gives you the options I mentioned. MIDI itself is just data, information, like sheet music. You cannot hear sheet music. It must be interpreted and played through an instrument. That's what a soft synth does. No instrument, no sound. Make sense?

the focusrite is not an option for midi the mpkmini is the only option for input and output. I'll keep trying to figure this out

Ok. Lets verify that sound is getting from Sonar to your Focusrite. Click Edit>Preferences. Under Audio Devices, make sure the Output Driver for the Focusrite is checked. Under Driver Settings, make sure the Focusrite is selected in both the Playback Timing Master and Record Timing Master. Under Playback and Recording, what Driver Mode is selected? ASIO is probably the best option here. So far so good? Play an audio track. Do you have sound? We'll get to the MIDI/soft synth, but first things first. ps. I see you have been a member since 2009. Were you using a previous version of Sonar? If so, were you able to get it to work? I'm guessing yes, at least to a degree. What is different now? New interface? New computer? New version of Sonar? I'm just trying to get a feel for where you are with the software. Getting sound from a soft synth should be fairly straightforward IF Sonar is set up properly and you are getting sound in general. That is why I am asking you to do this stuff. Please help us help you.

apologize for the delay. been sick all week, my elderly parents have been here for medical stuff and work- ah yes work! anyway, I have got this to work two different nights. it isn't real easy though. have to run this erase and recompute program every time and still doesn't seem to connect real easy. The cakewalk system doesn't seem to pick it up very fast. Like it doesn't like a certain usb port or I have to switch it. Anyway. just my third time and it is working now (switched usb ports). the people on this forum are incredible. I started with cakewalk 9, then sonar 7 now this x1. Really incredible. haven't spent a lot of time with this recording stuff. however I have some really cool and catchy commercials for our business that I will post soon Thanks and thanks.
