usb mobo problem? help please

i am not sure why but my new daw pc has gott somthing weird going on.
when i plug somthing into the usb port like a external hardrive my computer will not recognize it.
but if i plug the same hard drive into 2 usb ports using a y configured usb cable it works fine.
the weird thing is my axiom 61 works just fine plugged into the usb.
and i have tried unplugging the axiom to make sure im not drawing to much power.
my new digi camera will not work as well through the usb ports.
im thinking it may be somthing in the mobo my specs are below.
i hope i posted this in the wright place if not im sorry.
any help would be great cuz i just bought a terabyte hardrive that runs of usb for backups of sonar recordings. tim

Possibly a bad cable? Are you swapping out cables?

Definitely sounds like a USB power issue to me. Many standard MB USB ports are current limited so if you are plugging in something that needs more the port may just shut down. Have you tried using an externally powered USB hub?

Turn off power management to the root hubs; XP turns it on by default.

Go into device manager and right click on a root hub to bring up properties. Under power management, uncheck any checked boxes. Repeat for each hub and reboot.
    Done.

As Ew & AndyW say, it is definately a power issue. I always use a powerd hub or use a power adapter on the device (I have a number of 2.5" external hard drives and I use a wall wart with them).

Some USB ports will work fine for a while but if another device needs power, the available power is shared and your device can fail due to low power.

My expierence has been that self-powered USB devices work very reliabily. Never rely on the USB port to power your device.
