using instrument plug in question
hello all, and first happy holidays to all. And, thanks all for your patiences as this area of DAW is QUITE new for me. Before I get started I know I already asked this, but still need help. And here my goal(s) -To link Garritan sound Multi Aria player as ONE instance, therefore I can use all 16 tracks. What I can do: load Garritan and the software's do connect, but for each track Aria loads separately. therefore channel one is the default. i.e. 3 tracks=Aria popping up a total of three times. what I have done: -tried switching midi channels to correspond for each track -gone to garritan web site to read up on this -reading manual as of recent -will try youtube and FORUM!! I am confused with: -midi vs instrument track and how route correctly..not sure if I should worry about busing... Hope to be less ignorant in 2017! thank you all for ANY help!!

Try this: Add 16 MIDI tracks to a new project. Add one instrument instance of Cakewalk TTS-1, which I used, to follow along with this example. Get this working and then you can repeat the same process and substitute Garritan for TTS-1. Set Sonar Track View to show I/O. http://www.cakewalk.com/D...;help=Tutorial1.6.htmlTo expand a track to make all of its controls visible: 1. Point the cursor to the bottom edge of the track. 2. Click and drag down to reveal all track controls. Look at the 1st MIDI track. You should see three selection drop down fields (Tip: hover your cursor over the little gray icon at the left of each field). Input = [your MIDI controller] Output = [TTS-1] MIDI Channel = [1: Cakewalk TTS-1] Now look at 2nd MIDI track. You should see the same setup. EXCEPT now you change the third drop down selection field to MIDI channel 2 (You should see all 16 available when you click the drop down arrow). MIDI Channel = [2: Cakewalk TTS-1] Play a note and now you should see track #2 on the TTS-1 receive the note and play the instrument that is selected in TTS-1 slot #2. The instruments in TTS-1 are paired up with MIDI channels 1-16 for instrument slots 1-16, respectively. Repeat this for MIDI track 3 and so on, for as many as you need, up to 16. To play one or more of the MIDI channels together, enable the MIDI echo button on the desired MIDI tracks (it's normally active only for the currently selected track). When you play your MIDI controller, the MIDI data is echoed to all tracks with echo enabled. If no sounds, or the wrong sounds play in your instrument, you probably need to check this.

ok, thanks when I select output I don't have TTS-1 option. I have from the drop down: master, preview, metronome. if I click on audio outputs I am only given my audio interface. I will get this!

Go back to basics with an empty project. Either from the Browser, locate and drag into Track view the TTS-1 synth, or go Insert > Soft Synth and again select TTS-1 You should be presented with a dialog box where you check certain items. Check Midi Source and All Synth Audio Outputs: Mono This will create 9 tracks for you - 8 audio and 1 midi. All 16 of the TTS-1 default to the Piano sound at the bottom apart from Channel 10 which defaults to Drums you can select and audition different patches by clicking the note icon at the bottom of the screen

If you see audio outputs, you are looking at the wrong type of track. The audio tracks have the wave icon, the MIDI tracks have a round icon that looks like a plug (5-pin MIDI DIN connector). The audio tracks have the drop down: master, preview, metronome, etc. The instrument plugin itself will have an audio output default to the Master bus, but don't worry about that yet. It should take care of itself ... So ... 1. Insert a MIDI track. Insert > MIDI Track. MIDI tracks don't have audio outputs. When you insert a standalone MIDI track (not an audio track, or instrument track) you won't see any instruments in the output selector until you add one. 2. Insert the Cakewalk TTS-1 GM synth (or any instrument) as an instrument track. It will create it's own audio output automatically. Insert > Soft Synth > [your choice]Once you do this, you can select it as a MIDI output option from the MIDI track you added in step #1. Any instruments that have been inserted into your project will show up as outputs for your MIDI track. You need this track to route your controller, or your MIDI pattern clips, to trigger the chosen sound in your instrument. 3. Set up as many of the MIDI tracks as you have active instrument slots in your plugin (TTS-1). Each MIDI track can route to only one instrument and only one MIDI channel, 1-16 on that instrument. That is why you will probably need to use more than one MIDI track to work with your Garritan plugin. Each slot in that will require its own MIDI track. So practice with the TTS-1 until you get the hang of it, because we all have it and can answer your questions about it. You will need each MIDI track to fire a separate instrument in the plugin (TTS-1), based on the assigned MIDI channel for that MIDI track. You can put a MIDI pattern in each MIDI track, or select a MIDI track and send MIDI data (note on, note off, etc.) from your keyboard controller via that track's MIDI channel. The MIDI tracks are what send MIDI data to the instrument to play it.

I think OP wants to use a multi-timbral 16 MIDI channel setup for a virtual instrument plugin, rather than a multi-audio output, to get started with Garritan Aria.

ok, i got 8 tracks and 1 midi. so i am going to see if i can switch the piano sound via garritan? i am assuming if i want more tracks i just repeat the steps? thank you so much!

OK, then just follow the steps that I outlined earlier. Insert 16 MIDI tracks into a new project. Then insert one instance of the multi-timbral plugin as a simple instrument track. You only get one stereo audio output from the instrument plugin this way, but it's easier to keep the focus on learning MIDI first. Get that sorted out, then you can always grow into multiple audio outputs and busing as your needs expand. Sonar has got you covered, LOL! Good luck, and all the best to learning

so steps 1 -2 should look like this: 1 midi 2 midi and inst 3 midi and inst 4 midi symbol then saying bass (inst. i picked) would do a screen shot but drop box doesn't want to play nice.. btw, when I was at step 2 the dialogue box opened and the midi source was checked and mono left channel was checked..

Start a new project and delete all tracks that appear by default. Now with a completely empty blank project ... 1. Insert one MIDI track. 2. Insert one Soft Synth (Insert soft synth options, check create "Simple Instrument Track"). Now your first MIDI track (from step 1) should be already assigned by default to output to the soft synth (from step 2) and transmit on MIDI channel 1. You can then add additional MIDI tracks, but you will need to change the MIDI channel outputs ON EACH new MIDI track respectively, to channel 2, channel 3, etc., up to 16. Let all of the MIDI tracks output to the same instrument plugin instance. In this case there will only be one instrument plugin instance for the entire project, but each MIDI track will communicate on it's own channel. So this way one multi-timbral instrument plugin can receive data for up 16 MIDI Tracks (channels) simultaneously

OK I think it went sideways when though meaning well Jonesey Gave a different example. the trouble is ---- there is more than one way to achieve most tasks in Sonar ( or any DAW) abacab's post #2 was the way I would have done it too. I don't use simple instrument tracks which is a combonation audio and midi track, I find that restricting if I want to change the VST I'm using. Much simpler to use a pure midi track and then you can easily change it's output to different synths while looking for the right sounds. so in less detail of what abacab has clearly described already. Insert tts-1 choose the single output option. Other options can be yours to use later once you get the hang of it. You insert as many midi tracks as you will need. A fast way is use the "insert multiple tracks" And now it's a matter of changing the dialog in all those little boxes in the track pane or inspector. Input= Midi port or USB from controller. Output= TTS_1 (or any soft synth) Midi channel = each track will be assigned a different channel. ( 1: Cakewalk TTS_1 ) ( 2: Cakewalk TTS_1 ) Bank selection= choose bank 0 to start, later you can explore sounds in other banks Patch or Program = select the sound for that channel for each track. Now you just set the track in record mode for the instrument you wish to use and go at it. If you want to see what TTS-1 can do download a midi file and "open it" TTS-1 will automatically load with all 16 tracks and all the instruments and play the way the composer wanted it to sound. https://freemidi.org/download-4224-silver-bells-christmas Terribly played like most of them but I was in a hurry :)

I think you are on the same track as me. The OP apparently is still learning about the different types of tracks that Sonar supports. What is the difference between a MIDI track, an audio track, or an instrument track? What are the relationships between them? How does it all work together? Back when I started out there were MIDI only sequencers, and MIDI ports to external instruments, so the options were fairly basic way back then, LOL!!! Audio sequencers, ha! Only if we reverse engineer alien technology someday! I think the OP's intent is to use the Garritan Aria personal orchestra. My impression is that he keeps ending up with multiple instances of the plugin, where he actually only needs one. I am trying to start out with an example of one MIDI track and one plugin instrument track, so that he understands the basic relationship there, and can build additional MIDI tracks in as he needs to add parts to his plugin instrument. I used TTS-1 simply because the principle is the same, and transferring the knowledge gained to Aria should be a Cakewalk ! Plus we all have it if we need to compare notes! I don't have Garritan, but looked it up on their website. http://www.garritan.com/powered-by-aria-player/http://www.garritan.com/p...chestra-5/aria-player/https://wpmedia.garritan.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Additional-Strings-in-Garritan-Personal-Orchestra-5.png

Question: why do you want to run separate instances? If you only need several instruments, you certainly can do that. But you are not taking advantage of the mult-timbral features of your plugin that way. If you work within one plugin instance, you can build your mix in the plugin, using it's features, and it all gets sent back to the Sonar master audio bus as one mix in a single stereo audio track. (Aria has options for multi-audio outputs, but file that away for later). It could take more computer power and RAM if you try to run each track with a separate instrument plugin instance. It is much, much simpler to use up to 16 tracks in one instance of your plugin. This results in one audio output to mess with in Sonar, until you need more... If you use only one sound from each plugin instance, you will have to do all of the mixing as audio at the Sonar console, as if you were recording up to 16 external analog instruments or microphones. Each plugin instance will return a stereo audio track to the Sonar master bus. So you either mix it here, or there, LOL! The only reason I could see for running several plugin instances, would be to separate instruments into sub-mixes in order to treat each sub-mix separately with FX in Sonar on the audio return output from the plugin. But that's for the advanced mixing tutorial

Great! Have fun with some MIDI now! Sonar is pretty smart as far as opening MIDI (.mid) files. Just open one in Sonar and see what happens The .mid file will open up as many MIDI track(s) as it needs for each part and will automatically be set up as multi-timbral mode with the TTS-1 instrument by default. You can play this as is, or swap the synth for another plugin by right-clicking on the TTS-1 and selecting "Replace Synth". Choose your preferred VST instrument plugin and off you go! For example, say I create a quick 3 part score in MuseScore and export it as a .mid file. Then, when I open that file in Sonar it becomes 3 MIDI tracks and one TTS-1 instrument track. Track 1, 2, and 3 are already routed to MIDI channels 1, 2, 3, which can be observed by watching the track level meters when playing it. Also by viewing the TTS-1 GUI you can see the first three instrument slots are playing along with MIDI channels 1-3. Alternately, you can just drag a .mid file directly onto the track pane of an already open project, and it will create new MIDI tracks for each track in the file. Or if you have single parts in .mid format, you can drag them into existing MIDI tracks in the clips pane. Don't forget to save the project in Sonar as a "Normal" .cwp project file after you finish the setup. The .mid format won't retain most of your Sonar settings. Don't ask me how I know, LOL! Sonar is very cool with MIDI

Okay,. You are quite kind of with your time. When I deeply appreciate it :-) although I have been involved with music for a long time I realize this is a completely new world-which I am pysched about! Luckily I have a little time as I don't have any big deadlines until the end of January when which will happen fast.. Because I am a teacher im trying out sonar with students as well as Cubase!! I'm sure many folks think it's crazy to use more than one DAW, but for now it's the learning cycle.... I'm sure when I need a to get stuff done my brain will connect to the correct tool. We'll be checking out your song :-) Super grateful for your responses. Happy holidays, Jim

No problem! I always learn something new when I try to answer a question. Or re-learn something that I had forgotten, so it works both ways. Pay it forward I was in school band for years, but after school got caught up in the day job, and neglected to keep up with my music. Then years later, I decided to get back into music as a hobby with a keyboard synth. Then I picked up a MIDI sequencer, then a keyboard synth workstation with an internal sequencer, and finally a computer. Mad addiction, LOL! I remember trying to decide what music software to use on Windows 95 back then. Most of the good stuff was Mac only. A guy in the store suggested this thing called Cakewalk. So I picked up a copy. I also ended up with a LE version of Cubase for Windows. Both Cakewalk and Cubase got started as excellent MIDI sequencing tools, with multiple MIDI tracks, piano rolls, and notation views. But they were not quite DAWs yet. A lot of technology has changed since the days when music software just consisted of a MIDI sequencer, or some notation stuff. Inexpensive, reliable, digital audio really has changed the game. These sequencers began adding audio recording, then real-time audio FX with monitoring, and virtual instruments and samplers. DAWs are now a full blown recording studio in the box, and much more complex. I doubt many users ever learn or use all of the tools available in their DAW. But there is plenty to grow into, when needed. Plus there are a lot more choices today. But for the Windows platform I would have to say that Cakewalk Sonar and Cubase are both probably great tools for MIDI production. They were founded on MIDI roots. With all of the demos available for download, it would be wise to try several DAWs and see what works best for your creative workflow. But due to the time investment involved climbing the steep learning curve of any one of these tools, eventually pick one, and learn it well. They all do the same things, just differently. The idea is to stop thinking about how to make it work, and just create music All the best, and Happy Holidays!!!

Are you doing this in Sonar Home Studio, or Platinum? They may have slight differences ... If the .mid file is not opening in Sonar with TTS-1, check the source application of your test score .mid file. It may export things differently. Sonar should understand the SMF (Standard MIDI File) specification. That standard was created a long time ago to enable file exchange between systems. Ensure that you are choosing SMF Type 1, if the option is available, but Type 0 should also work. Silent tracks - - is another thing that still gets me. Be aware of the keyboard note # range assigned to each sound in the VST. This is usually set by the sound designer to prevent an instrument from playing outside of it's range. If my MIDI track only has notes in the C1-G2 range, and the instrument sound is set as for example, say C3 - G4, then no sound will play. If I see the MIDI track meter flashing, but no sound, it's usually either that, or the wrong MIDI channel sending the data. So as follow up, how about instead of posting something like "tried all the steps and no luck", please post exactly the steps you have taken, in detail, and the results of each step. That is the only way we can help, short of looking over your shoulder. Best of luck!

For SONAR to automatically map a MIDI file to TTS-1 when opened, there must not be a MIDI output selected in Preferences > MIDI > Devices. If SONAR has a MIDI output device selected in preferences, TTS-1 will not be added when opening a MIDI file.

+1 Experimenting is the best way to learn this stuff. Sonar is my laboratory, BWAHAHAHA <evil laugh> That's the cool thing about MIDI, is that you can use any instrument sound to play back any MIDI part. Sometimes good mistakes happen. Try some sounds that were not meant for the part, think outside the box! Or sometimes it's fun to just take a GM (General MIDI) song file, open it up in TTS-1 with the basic GM sound set. And then, one by one using your VST's, substitute really good instrument sample or virtual synth sounds for the original GM sounds. It's amazing how much better you can make a song sound which was originally arranged to be played with sound fonts... Best of luck!

Sometimes you have to adjust the size of your audio buffers to allow for what you are doing. The default does not always work best for all situations. Small buffer sizes give you the benefit of low latency at a cost of CPU usage. Large buffers take less CPU, but creates longer latency. You need to find the balance that works for your project and your system. This applies to all DAWs. If the Sonar audio engine is dropping out when the Aria player is running, try increasing your ASIO buffers. The Aria player may be more demanding than TTS-1. Hopefully you are using a decent dedicated audio interface with low latency ASIO drivers. But if not, and you are running Windows 10 and Platinum, you could check out the improved Sonar WASAPI driver for Win 10 just introduced in Sonar Platinum update 2016.11. http://static.cakewalk.com/cakewalk/products/sonar/release_notes/Welcome_to_the_SONAR_2016.11_Release.pdf For adjusting audio buffers, look at these knowledge base articles: I'm getting a delay or latency when recording or performing synthshttps://www.cakewalk.com/...g-or-performing-synths Audio Dropouts, Clicks and Pops When Playing and RecordingAudio Driver Latency/Buffer Size Needs to be increased if you are experiencing dropouts in the sense that the audio engine is completely stopping and your Cakewalk software is reporting "DROPOUT" in its Control Bar or Status Bar https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013007/Audio-Dropouts-Clicks-and-Pops-When-Playing-and-Recording
