uuummmmmm...need advice on a recorder...

I have an interesting project involving an audio recording of an old ALCO RS3 locomotive for a friend of mine...now...the issue is...what recorder would be the best for this type of field recording?

Roland VS-Studio 100 first comes to mind, great portable device serving as a SD card recorder, audio interface, mixer and control surface for Sonar. How many locomotives we'll be there and what's the song name?

    p.s.
only limitation VS100 doesn't run on batteries.

V-Studio 100, Sony VAIO i7 2.93GHz/ 8GB RAM, Pianoteq, Sonar X1 Studio, ezDrummer, Macbook Pro, Roland RD700GX stage piano, Yamaha Motif XS6 workstation, Rode NT-1A, AKG Perception 220

Darn near any. It all depends on what you want. A pocket recorder would do the job. One that has a tripod mount would work just fine. Zoom has a nice selection of the them.

That was one candidate I had been looking into but the place this thing is sitting at has electrical outlets somewhat out of the way..I can see a couple of 50 foot extension cords in my future purchases though

    Thanks guys for the ideas!!!
