vista/firestudio project woes under sonar 5 pe

Hello all.

I am a proud and [usually] happy sonar 5 producer edition owner. I bought a new machine to replace my broken windows 2000 machine. I have NEVER had a problem before with sonar 5 pe and my emu 1820m.

Now I have a windows vista premium with a hp touchsmart running a firewire presonus firestudio project and problems abound.

First, the audio engine in sonar 5 pe keeps turning off all the time. No crackles or latency issues per se, but it keeps turning off due to volume spikes. Whenever I load in a new vsti (like stylus rmx or wusik), it turns off the audio engine.

I also have HUGE cpu usage doing absolutely NOTHING. I just load in any one of the two above and cpu usage goes to 80 and 90%??????

In windows 2000, I could load in 20 vsti's with no hiccups.

My problem is that I cannot go back, so can anyone help me or advise me how to potentially fix this problem? And, please, don't tell me to go to xp or flame vista, surely there has to be a fix to this problem!

I JUST bought the presonus YESTERDAY, and the drivers, I believe, are totally up-to-date.

Do I need to simply upgrade to Sonar 7, or is that a step in the worse direction. I keep reading horror stories and sonar 5 pe was so darn stable for me - I really never had an issue till now.

Mike

You need to upgrade to Sonar 7. Sonar 5 is not Vista friendly... but then so are a lot of applications. That's why you should run the Windows Vista Advisor available from the Microsoft website before switching (notice I didn't say upgrading) to Vista.

    Thanks Dave.

I did not switch or upgrade - this is a new machine with vista on board (grin).

I have no choice, as my previous computer died and it ran windows 2000.

I will upgrade, if you believe that will fix it.

Essentially, what will the windows advisor do for me? This machine (the HP Touchsmart) is an all-in-one and I cannot really replace or upgrade anything except hard drive and ram.

    Well,

I decided to look for a fix for the problem and googled optimization tips for audio. I came across a website (darn computer rebooted on me after a memory test I initiated before I could save the URL for all of you) that provided 13 optimization tips. I followed many of them and so far, Sonar 5 PE is now working the way it used to!!!

I was even able to load in 3 vsti's (and using them all at once) and the cpu never went above 17%, which is AWESOME!

If this keeps up, I may just be in business.

    Thanks anyway everyone.

The google terms I used were "vista audio optimization tips" and the article was actually about umpc's and vista - and I figured, if a tiny little computer needs optimizations to work efficiently, perhaps my bigger cousin needs them, too.

I'll still upgrade at some point, but at least it may not be this week. On the other hand, I really need to sit down and compose something this weekend to put vista and the presonus firestudio project through it's paces.

One other thing it may be worth noting is that THe Jet chips used in the Firestudio have had issues in Sonar. I would search this forum for further information on that if you have further problems/ wish to optimise further.

You should with a decent Vista setup say a 1.6/1.7 dual core with a gig of ram and Sonar 7 be able to run 30-40 tracks projects iwth severeal VSt and VSt'is when properly optimized.
