vocal in x series

I laid down a vocal track now I would like to add reverb or delays to some words to add extra emphasis. I know you can split the wave to yhe desired word and add some effects on it. For some reason not all fx are open to me. An added delay only goes on until the next phrase on the wave and then it is cut out. Is there any other ways in how you can edit words and apply effects?

This applies to single words and not whole takes.

Thanks

The delay's "tail" will exist only during the clip if applied to a clip. If there is no clip, then there is no longer a clip for the effect to process.

There are several possible solutions. I suggest cloning the vocal track but without any events. Split the words you want from the first track and drag them into the second track. Apply trimming to these clips of individual words. Now extend the end of the clip for as long as you want the delay to last if you want to use clip effects. If you're applying the same type of delay to all words, then just insert the delay in the FX bin for the second track.

Another option is to create a delay buss. Create a send to the vocal track and automate the send level. First find a good send level and then set your automation so the send is at -inf and then goes to the level you want when you want it.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

I have never used a bus or automation im not a power user but Mr Anderton is closer to how I would work. Although I am not ruling using busses as I would like to start using them on midi instruments.

in fact today I will be setting up busses and getting familiar with the technical sides of Sonar. and trying to do the same with midi as with vocals. So I may need assistance with this. Many of you are experts at using busses and sends. Maybe if any of you have a video or can walk me through setting one up that would be great for me.

    Thanks in advance

If I want a single instance or maybe a couple of instances of an effect I use the clip fx bin. As Craig pointed out you may need to extend the clip if you don't want the tail cut off.

Any more than a couple of instances I use a buss and control that via send level automation.

    1. Create the buss in the buss view (Right Click "Insert New Stereo Buss")
    2. Insert necessary effect on buss and set up as required
    3. Rename buss to something meaningful
    4. Select required tracks. In track header right click, hold ctrl key down and select ""Insert send" - Choose send from list.
    5. Control send level via automation envelope.

Huh.  I just learned something really interesting here.

To test this out, I split a vocal clip, added GuitarRig to the clip, and used Quad Delay on the preset called Forever.  Sure enough, the delay cut off abruptly as soon as the next clip started.

Since I don't generally use clip-based effects, this was very enlightening and I can see ways to use this effectively.  And, of course, why this would not always be the right solution.

    Thanks Craig and FBB.

I will have to try some of the points made as I want to try vocals and midi instruments on a track with the sends that you have suggested. Thanks
