volume envelope and volume change

How do I change the volume fader with volume automation in the track? When I try changing it just goes back.

If you're asking how to change the volume on a track that already has automation recorded in it, you need to be Track View, and move the appropriate nodes up or down.  If you're trying to change the volume with the fader during playback - and I think that's what you're describing, then you need to keep "record automation" on and record new automation on top of what already exists.  Doing that, you'll need to clean up the results by moving the nodes, because you'll get some unintended jumps at the beginning and ending of your new automation recording.

I think that I know what sharpdion23 is trying to do.

What he describes happens when already have some automation envelope, and try to "correct" some parts with your fader (by overwriting the older data). The moment you stop moving the fader, the envelope "jumps" to the already written level. What sharpdion23 trying to archive is some "sustain" level of the fader that overwrites the older envelope. In other words - the level you move your fader to should be hold the moment you stop moving the fader, and the old envelope should be overwritten by this new value. Unfortunately the moment your fader is not longer moved there are no MIDI input signals and the already written data "takes over", resulting in sometimes very sharp drops or peaks in the envelope. Mind you - this behaviour is not Sonar only. It happens in other DAW's too.

To be honest - when I try to correct an envelope I do use the mouse for small corrections, or -when a big correction is needed- I delete the envelope and lay down a new. As I seldom need the way sharpdion23 is describing, I never took the time to figure out how it could be done. The reason I react now is that I want to know how this can be done too. Maybe one of the other readers here?
