Apparrently you can use both connections. I'm not sure about the surround set up. It does have a subwoofer out. Optical SPDIF is somewhat different from optical ADAT I beleive. I don't think you get 8 channels with optical SPDIF, I beleive it's 2. The subwoofer circuit is obviously built in to the monitor and splits off there. The optical in/out on the V 700R is ADAT- 8 channels so I'm not sure if that's an option.

You're better off using the analog connections for your monitors.

Connect your stereo monitors to the Main outputs.

Connect an alternate monitor set or a headphone amp to the Sub outputs.

Connect your surround monitors to outputs 1 through 6.

    Hey Scott,

I'm just curious about your recommendation:
"You're better off using the analog connections for your monitors. "

I definitely respect your experience with the VS-700 and was wondering what you feel the advantage is.

Ive been using The DIG1 connection to my DS-7 speakers.

    Thank you.

You can use the DIG1 connection, if you'd like. But personally, I like the quick and easy control I get using the MAIN outputs because they have a dedicated control on the surface.

    Digital 1 is not optical it's AES/EBU.

    Dig it.
    Thanks Scott.

Crg, DIG1 also has a Coax connection.

Thats all, just curious. I dont want to jack the thread away form the OPs question.

    Thanks for your time.

The Coax is a SPDIF, it's all on topic.

You can do zero latency input monitoring through the Main, Sub, or Digital outs (either SPDIF or AES/EBU). You can monitor stuff already in SONAR throgh the Main, Sub, Digital 1, Digital 2 (ADAT), or any of the 10 1/4" outs.

To mix in Surround you would connect 5 monitors and one sub to the 1/4" outputs, so you could use 5 MA-25Ds and a sub for that.

    I'm just curious,

If you just payed a butt load of money for Roland's AD converters, why would you bypass them and send that digital signal into a (probably) crappier AD converter.  I find that the 700r sounds amazing.  The pre amps and AD are stellar

wait so r u saying dat if i use both of the digital spdf light pipe connections on the 700r and the ma-15d its going to sound crappier then using the analog rca connections to the analog main connections on the 700r ? has anyone experimented this?
