When I open v-vocal in sonar it crashes right away, I have sonar 8.5.2. Anyone know what I can do to fix it?

I'm investigating a very similar experience, but have not confirmed whether it's from working in project files created in MC, or whether it can be crashed also in a newly-created project.
What sound interface do you use?  What sampling settings are you working in?   I've only now upgraded to Sonar 8.5.2PE for 2 days and am having solid crashes when testing with v-vocal.

Cronus.dll - Run Time Error on Playback or Faulting Module

The information in this article applies to:

  • SONAR 8.5 Producer
  • SONAR 8.5 Studio
  • SONAR 8 Producer
  • SONAR 7 Producer

If you receive a Run Time error during playback, when working with V-Vocal, or if the program closes unexpectedly, the issue may be caused by Cronus.dll. This dll controls V-Vocal, which is hard-coded into SONAR. In some cases, enabling this dll from the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager has been known to resolve the issue.

Please try the following to resolve this error:
  1. Click Tools | Cakewalk Plugin Manager
  2. Select the “Show Excluded” button in the bottom left corner
  3. If you see Cronus in the list of Registered Plug-ins first select it and then click the Enable Plugin button also located in the bottom left corner. This will remove it from the Excluded Plug-ins List.
  4. Once the plug-in has been enabled you will need to restart SONAR

Thanks, kevo -  I found the cronus.dll easily enough, enabled it, and restarted.  Tried again to open a project and added v-vocal; Sonar still crashed immediately.   For me at least, it must be something other than this DLL.    Thanks for the tip though, much appreciated.

Re:v-vocal crashes sonar when opened 2009/12/13 21:24:47 (permalink)
Well I fixed my problem. I installed sonar 7 then copied the v-vocal folder from the shared dxi folder to my desktop. Then uninstalled sonar 7. Then went back to the shared dxi folder and deleted the v-vocal folder. Then copied the v-vocal folder back to the shared dxi folder and now v-vocal loads up perfect. I guess the problem was that when I updated sonar it deletes some files from the v-vocal folder that need to be there.

Dont know if this makes sense but it worked for me.

wow - that's totally weird, but glad it helped.  I can't see how my situation would match because I've been able to test my 8.5.2PE with creating a NEW project and I can load and build audio  tracks and insert v-vocal fine.  I even opened a new audio track and imported a lead vocal .wav  into it and used v-vocal on it just fine.  So it can't be that my install is missing files etc.  It seems to have something to do with trying to bring up a project from MC into Sonar, and then using v-vocal.
At this point, since I only have 2 or 3 MC projects I'd like to work with in sonar anyway, I may go to the trouble of importing the tracks needed and rebuild.  Other than that I'll begin new projects in sonar.

Re:v-vocal crashes sonar when opened 2009/12/14 14:28:52 (permalink)
I believe I have found the cause for the type of v-vocal crashes I've experieinced, although I may not be able to explain it as well as those here with more technical know-how.  I did quite a lot of different tests, which were very time-consuming since after each crash I have to power my whole system down and bring it back up.  Here is what I have found -

As I said above, I am able to create a NEW project, insert an audio track, and IMPORT a wav file of vocals (from the same project folder as those that cause confirmed crashes) , and proceed to open v-vocal and process it just fine.  I have repeated this several times using multiple different projects done previously with MC5.  I brought them into Sonar and saved them and am not crashing at all.

If however, I try to open one of several PROJECTS done in MC5, it brings it up just fine.  I go to the vocal track and try to add v-vocal effect and it opens fine, I select a setting, and at THAT moment, the cursor is a spinning hourglass and a couple seconds later I'm looking at a total "unexpected error and application must close"  popup.  It may not be blue screen but it's the kiss of death.

Upon further  checking though, this is not the case for EVERY MC5 project I try to open.  In fact, my first experience with the newly-installed sonar 8.5.2 was that I pulled up an MC5 project, reworked every single vocal track (6 in all) by deleting its former FX, and used v-vocal FX, did a remix and saved it - then exported to a wav and an MP3 just fine.  Two subsequent projects crashed big-time.  I believe those other projects were ones in which I had done some kind of additional processing on the vocal and project files overall.

For one, I had used Melodyne Uno on the vocal tracks, which required me to convert the individual wav from 24-bit to 16-bit.  When brought back into MC5, I ended up  doing further processing on those songs which I then bounced to new audio tracks - yielding 32-bit renders.  I believe that it has to do with this track-specific rendering at different formats (bit depth) that MAY be the cause of the crashes using Sonar v-vocal plug-in.

I will leave this up to the CW folks to look into -  knowing it, means I should be able to work around it.  My plan of attack is to create a new project in Sonar, and import each track in manually until I have a stable project - or, I can leave it alone altogether and try to work it up as best I can just in MC5 and forget about it.   Either way, I don't consider it a killer; but I wanted to be sure to document all I could here in case it happens to others, who may have fooled around with audio track formats like I have.  I hope something I've been through can help others avoid some lost time!    For me, it's all good - chalk it up to learning curve!

I was having the same problem with V-vocal and was able to fix after reinstalling Sonar 8.0 and thus reinstalling v-vocal that came with 8.0 versus 8.5.  The cronus enabling made no improvement

I've been getting blue screens using V-Vocal (after several hours of work, not immediately. I was thinking it was a memory leak), and was going to write in for suggestions...I will see if any of the above helps. How timely! thanks!

I was having Sonar 8.5 crashing whenever I tried to create a v-vocal clip. I followed Joe C's advice. I installed Sonar 7, (just plugins) copied the V-Vocal folder to Sonar 8.5 shared DXi folder and all is fine. It is not a big file. We should just make it available to people having trouble.

I am still running Studio X2a but my computer crashed and I lost V Vocal. It shows up in the Dxi file and I followed your relocation instructions, but no luck. Here is my question...When I open the V vocal file, it shows "skin" and the Cronus.dll files. When I open SKIN, it shows a data base file named "thumbs".  Does this sound right? Thanks in advance.
