w7 won't boot with VS 100 [SOLVED!]

Hi! Newly built computer with i7 processor and lots of RAM. Works fast with SonarX1 64 bit. I would have been 100% satisfied if it wasn't for booting problems with VS 100 turned on. Win7 freezes and many times the VS' driver is lost. When I start the system with VS 100 turned off I have no problems. I guess this is somewhat a known issue for the Cakewalk people but do you have any suggestions to come around this irritating problem? I have disabled USB legacy support in BIOS but it makes no difference. Plze help! Greetings! Mikael

Does it get to the Windows "starting to load" screen?

If not three things:

a) Upgrade your BIOS firmware.
b) If (a) does not work you will probably end up buying a PCI USB card to get around it.
c) Also see if you can upgrade your VS100 firmware (probably won't work, not sure if there is any firmware updates either, but worth a go).

Otherwise tell us what happens when you boot. Please show us what you have in your footer (see my footer).
Then there is always Cakewalk support....

Thanks Alex! Checked for BIOS update and the reply is "No proper BIOS image on the server!". The installed version is fairly new, I guess, 05/09/2011. Booting gets stuck within seconds when the ASUS logo is shown. If I then turn off VS-100, booting resumes almost immediately. Ah, had no idea that a pci-card with USB ports would make difference. It sounds reasonable. I have the latest firmware and driver for the V-Studio 100 sound card. And Cakewalk support, yes. I'll try that if there is no easy solution.

Just wanted to add that I had no problems like this when I used Sonar X1 with XP (32 bit).

Newly built computer with i7 processor

Hmm. Boot halting early in the process with a live USB device attached suggests that your BIOS (UEFI?) may be looking to boot from a USB boot device and not finding what it needs to do that. Check to see if booting from a USB drive or device is enabled in BIOS and disable it if that is possible. At least set the boot sequence so the first boot device is your system hard disk.

Thanks slartabartfast! I also thought of BIOS trying to boot from my sound card(!). I can't find anything in BIOS booting priority or other booting adjustment where it says something about a USB-device. As said I tried USB legacy support disabled but it made no difference. With VS-100 switched off, win7 starts within 15 seconds thanks to the SSD with the OS. With VS-100 turned on it takes at least two minutes with a notification of an unknown USB-device (VS 100) in the right corner. If I start X1 at that point, it will notify about no sound card. Usually function comes back if I  switch off and on VS 100 again but then I have to set the midi control ports again. Disappointing with all the money spent and when everything else work well. Would PCI USB connector come around this as suggested? I gues I'll try to disconnect the USB LAN device and then the hard drives (two internal SATA I) from my old DAW computer and see if it makes any difference.  Some sort of hard ware conflict could also be the problem, I guess.

Sounds like your BIOS are set to look for a USB device to boot from. When the VS-100 is connected it obviously can't because its not a boot device. Check your boot devices in BIOS and make sure that the order is HDD, CD-ROM and USB onlt if you want. I usually leave USB booting disabled as I don't have any USB boot devices..

I can't find anything in BIOS booting priority or other booting adjustment where it says something about a USB-device.

Look for the option to boot from an external drive. Or even from network drive.

Re:w7 won't boot with VS 100 2011/10/04 20:13:28 (permalink)
Thank you kindly StarTekh! I've flashed the new BIOS/UEFI update from ASUS and got the 0706-update (release date 08/05/2011). I made a lot of drivers' update from driveragent.com. (as well as USB 3.0 from ASMedia). I tried to set Option on ROM in BIOS/UEFI to "keep current" instead of "force BIOS". I unplugged the old SATA-HDD:s from the former DAW-computer but still the same probelm ("USB-device not recognized"). In the release notes from Cakewalk on the latest VS-100-driver, the have a bunch of remarks on Win7 with VS-100 and they are describing the same problems with unrecognized USB-device and recommend users to do switch on only when win7 has booted up. Whats worse is that even in this manner I can't prevent X1 from loosing midi-inouts and outputs. So not even an AC-foot switch would do... It's a backlash and I am thinkning of getting a new audio-card/midi-controller which work in win7 and WITH Sonar. My last attempts are to get in contact with Ckewalk support or even ASUS support (if possible).

Here are the release notes of the latest win7-driver for VS-100. Would be interesting to hear from someone else how they go together? "Caution when using the Windows 7 64-bit Edition In order to use this product with the 64-bit Edition of Windows 7, please read and understand the following points. You must also take into account the compatibility of each product you will be using. In order to use the 64-bit Edition of Windows 7, you must use 64-bit drivers; not only for this product, but also for all hardware you're using with your computer. This driver has been tested on several computer systems, but please understand that we cannot guarantee it will operate on your particular computer. Cautions and Limitations Sound interruption or other less-than-perfect outcomes may be experienced if your computer's performance and specifications are somewhat inadequate. The types of applications you use and the way in which you use them can also influence the experience you receive. On some computers, the driver does not load correctly if the VS-100 is already connected when Windows is started up. As a result, it will not be possible to use the VS-100 via USB. If this occurs, wait until after Windows has started to turn on the power of the VS-100 (or to connect it). If the VS-100 does not work correctly after resuming from Sleep mode, you should exit all applications that use the VS-100, and then turn the power of the VS-100 off and on again. If the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected while the VS-100 is in use, or if the power of the VS-100 is turned off, then on again, it may stop operating correctly. If this occurs, after resuming, you should exit all applications that use the VS-100, and turn the power of the VS-100 off, then on again. If your computer was experiencing a heavy processing load, such as when accessing a CD-ROM Drive or network while the VS-100 was being used, the VS-100 may no longer operate correctly. If this occurs, stop the playback or recording, then try starting playback or recording over again. If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the VS-100, then turn the VS-100 off and then on again. Audio clicks and pops may occur during playback or recording if you connect or disconnect other USB devices (such as USB memory) or turn another USB device on/off while using the VS-100. In some cases, you may not obtain the expected level of performance if you're using a USB-connected hard disk at the same time as the VS-100. Do not use a USB-connected hard disk as the storage destination for the audio that you're playing back or recording."

For those who would like to monitor my attempts to get a stable system: Moved around the USB-connectors and gave VS-100 one of lowermost at the rear panel. Even changin mouse slot gave faster boot. The situation improved a bit with win7 now recognizing VS-100 but Sonar still refuses to do the same (its own soundcard!!!). The I uninstalled Sonar X1 and reinstalled it in 32 bit. Now everything looked lovely at first, decent boot up time (~one min). Sonar opened nicely. I started a new project and inserted Kontakt with Alicia Keys Piano. Fine but when I tried to insert Trillian bass, Sonar froze and when I boot up again, start Sonar, windows gets just paralyzed and there is now way closing down than to do it manually. I will do another attempt to re-install X1c.

So I did. Paid USD 15 and the last pci-slot (the video card crowded out the first). And it works! No boot-problems, no freezing of Sonar nor the OS. Thanks a million Ta!!!
