what are the best 3 AD packs/kits, that one might choose??

Since I never really used them in X3e, (Toontrack user) and seeing that the Fairfax seemed to be the best kit, but you had to buy it...
So...would Fairfax, BLack Velvet be two top choices?   and a 3rd might be...??

That is probably depends on your personal preferences, go to XLN Audio's webpage and listen to the demos. I have Fairfax 1 and it is probably my favorite right now. Black Velvet seems to be very popular. I am going to pick it up when I get Platinum along with either Fairfax 2, Metal, or Session Percussion.  (I like to add percussion though it comes out cheesy. My 8yr son likes heavy metal so I though I make a few things for him).

I grabbed Fairfax 1 for straight rock and pop sounds. It is an impressive kit that's proving quite versatile. It seems like the type of kit that you could probably sneak into just about anything...

I also nabbed Black Velvet, which has you covered for 90's grunge and heavy rock sounds of the same era. *It's hard for me to program with it though, because I keep getting distracted by a thick wall of nostalgia every time it starts to play!*  Love the sounds though!

And lastly I commandeered Retroplex. It wasn't a kit that I thought I would be grabbing? But when I heard one of the sound examples that was just total, "Grab your crutch and slap someone near you, stadium rock!"?... I was sold!!!

I am thinking about Retroplex and the two Fairfax kits (mainly because of all the favourable comments). I am not sure what this will add on top of my miriad of FXPansion and Toontrack kits, but nothing really jumped out as filling a hole. Retroplex looked just that little different.

I wish someone would sample Carl Palmer's steel kit (if it still exists)

I can imagine the list will vary wildly depending on musical tastes.  I am still deciding.  I am sure  i will get the vintage dry and am also leaning towards session percussion and jazz brushes

The Vintage Dry is definitely one that has that little bit of magic warmth in it. Directly A/B-ing it against other options reveals its worth! Not sure if it's the kit, the rooms, the mics or XLN's dark arts? Maybe it's all of the above?... Has gotten a lot of use by me, for sure!

I had upgraded to ad2 plus 1 kit for 119 (internal 3 kits plus the funk kit ).l like all the kits but I have say I like funk kit the most. I had used sd2 in my production and very happy with it. CW did a very good move to include ad drums in the package. Really looking forward to the upgrade . If I am correct the new sonar platinum will get you the sd2 professional package which will include 3 adpaks. But you still need to fork out another 80 in order to update your sd1 internal 3 kits (or any ad1 adpaks) into sd2 compatible drum kits. Can someone verify that?

The AD Producer Bundle kits include the AD2 engine. Which means you can sill utilise the kits without having to update to the full AD2.

But if you want to be able to use your old midi packs and AD1 kits, in AD2? Then you need to upgrade!

So, since I never bought any adpaks and just bought a slew of midi packs for 10 bucks each, in my case it's kinda stupid to pay $79 to make them usable in AD2 which kinda sucks...especially since they won't let me rebuy them with the platinum credits... they just have an "upgrade" button by them...  for 79 or $119!

which means I can only use my midi pak credits for paks I obviously didn't want as I didn't get them before....  arrrrrg... not worth the money or am I missing something?  as I read their faq, they said the internal sounds from AD1 were divided up into other adpaks!

I'm thinking a Fairfax (everyone seems to like them), vintage dry (demo sounds excellent) and maybe studio prog or the reel machine.  Looking for some of solid basic drum sounds but with 3 selections one of them can be more on the esoteric side.

I think the Vintage Dry kit is really unique among drum libs. Not for all genres, though!

I just picked up Indie, which I can see getting a lot of use.  It makes me want to write songs that sound kind of like "My Sharona".

I think the Studio Pop/Rock/Prog kits (aka the original AD1 factory set) get overlooked.   Before catching BF sales, I made a lot of use out of the "Steely" kit in one of them.

I have all of the packs and IMO, they're ALL very good.....you really can't go wrong. I like to mix/match different packs with various midi packs as well......there's a lot to work with as far as creativity is concerned.

Best is to listen to all the demo's and see which suits your fancy..........I couldn't make up my mind either and ended up fancying them all.

Session Percussion gives a variety to the rest with some Latino/Caribbean feel.......as I wanted variety.......good stuff!!

I'm still laughing about the (11 month) bump! A guy could get what you want or get what fills a "hole" in your drum selection. A while back I got Session Percussion and Jazz Brushes as hole fillers and love them. The Blue Oyster kit is the Bonham kit but can be tuned to make a great Indie kit. Just as good as the Indie kit they have. You would not go wrong getting both Fairfax kits and Black Velvet. They are just really good sounding kits. I would like to have the Black Oyster Ringo kit and the Funk if its a punchy funk kit.

Yo Daddy, I didn't find the Funk pack to be punchy as I was expecting it to be, but still a good kit. Of course, it wasn't hard to make it punchy with some minor tweaking to get it where you want it to be.

Thanks Mesh, just what I wanted to know. I can do that with the Funk Masters EZD kit. Ol' Skool funk is played kinda quiet and I like it punchier. I think tweak the drums and choose the right midi is the way to go.

+1 for Black Velvet.   I have the three Studio Kits, Fairfax 1, Black Oyster and Retroplex as well, and I really like them all.  But Black Velvet is still one of my personal favorites and in some ways I find a bit more flexible than some others.

I've made a commitment to BFD so I've purged a lot of my Toontrack and AD stuff.

It's not obvious but if you have both Fairfax 1 and 2 you get a bunch of mixed set presets (called Fairfax Bundle in the browser).  These are some fairly nice combinations of kit pieces from both sets.  Nice bonus if you own both of these.  You can always make your own bashed kits of course with whatever you own, it's a lot easier to have a good starting preset.

I think you're better off demoing the sounds within AD2.  There are more demo tracks available with just the drums rather than demo songs in the Webshop.

EDIT: Demos have the headphone icons.

Re: what are the best 3 AD packs/kits, that one might choose?? 2015/12/03 08:54:30 (permalink)
I added the United Pop, MJ Sticks and Black Velvet kits to my MJ Brushes, 3 Studios, VinDry, Fairfax 1, SessionPerc and Indie. Those were easy to pick. I still think I'll add the Black Oyster and Fairfax2.

The assortment of Kitpieces makes that pretty easy, too, especially with my Kits.

Where I seem to be undecided is the MidiPaks. I've listened to them all a few times and taken some notes, but last night mustn't have been the best time for that. I'll take another crack at it today. I've got Jazz Brushes, Ballads, DryBeats, Reggae, Perc, AfroLatin, Amer. Indie and Writer's blocks, so far. Jazz sticks is about all that I see as "likely".

On one hand it's all great stuff and so handy, but I'm wondering which is more useful to me; Songs or Beats?
I'm sure I'll sort it.

My first 3 were:
United Pop - for general usage.
Funk - for snappier styles (this ADPack shines equally well in many musical genres, that require punchy drums).
Brush - can be used almost in any genre. Stand out among other packs due to multiple brush strokes and snare articulations.

Black Velvet stands as my go-to across a number of styles; it's where I've drawn most of the shells to create the majority of my custom presets/kits.  It really is substantial.  Both Fairfax kits follow closely behind, but I'd like to mirror what Magic Russ said - the original Pop/Rock/Prog kits are quite useful and where I tend to draw most of my cymbals from.  Nice and bright Paiste high hat in the Rock AdPak.

I'm downloading United Pop, Retroplex, and Funk tonight with the AD2 Custom I bought over the weekend.  they all sound interesting, too.

Cool, I've never seen anyone else mention the Retroplex kit before.   I haven't used it for real yet, but given what it is I know I will.

I went back and listen to the Funk kit and Retroplex and am starting to really like them. The Funk is much punchier than I thought and will get it for sure. I didn't really want to like Retroplex but am liking it more and more.

It's Bass, not Bass.
