what good is Light Scribe if...?

...you can only print on a colored background? You select a photo; add text, choosing color for both text and background of the text field, pick your font and all, and voila! It washes all those carefully chosen colors out, using instead different degrees of contrast of the color of the disk itself. Finding silver lightscribe cds proved to be more difficult than I thought. No point here. We are limited by the current technology, I guess. I suppose a thermal printer is an option. Just venting

I see no dog in mcourter's avatar, therefore I see no avatar (light scribe or not).

BTW, I have lightscribe in my DAW and I've yet to use it. Maybe some day.

    Hmmm ...

    $20 for a Lightscribe DVD/BluRay/CD player/burner

    or

$6000 for a color thermal ribbon transfer printer to use on my homemade CD's that will end up on the floor of my car all scraped up ...

    Hmmm ...

    ... which one shall I choose ...

I just used my lightscribe yesterday. Haven't used it in years. Worked out pretty good cause I just used text.

I agree there's not much to it. Really the only thing is it beats any labels
    I messed with....many years ago.
And it's kind of fun when one has time.

Yeah, it is kind of fun making them. The yellow CD's are the best imo because they gives you the most contrast.

I don't use them for my own use, I just write on the CD with a Sharpie, but when I make CD's for friends I go all out with the Lightscribe. You can download the little CD AUDIO symbol and make it look like a store bought CD.

There's another technology called LabelFlash that is working on 4 color laser etching on special media. I'd spend a little cash on that one.

I have a hi-res Epson photo printer that has a special adapter to print CD's. It works very well and the printer was not expensive. The ink is proprietary and a replacement set of cartridges is about $100 but the output is amazing. The biggest project I've done on it was only 100 promo CD's for radio stations, but they looked real good.

+1 ... those Epson printers with the CD tray are absolutely amazing. I have one, but it needs new ink and I refuse to replace it. It dried up before I got 20 prints out of it so I can't justify it. The only problem is the print smears with the slightest touch.

What would be nice is if they could set up a color laser printer to run CD's through it. They are making them run cooler all the time ... I could see it happening eventually. Years ago Canon had a copier that ran off of pressure fixed toner and no heat ... but it was slow ... people are all about speed now days.

I hear the light scribes are slow, and only print on the LS disks.... I have one in my DAW I believe since it was a great price but I never use it to LS a disk.

I have a great inkjet that has a special CD tray, and I buy printable CD's at Staples. I work up the cover in the software, and print the disk in just a few short seconds. It looks good, and isn't one of those peel-off labels.

If a CD is of original and worth a label isn't it just better to have the pro's do it???
    And if it isn't.....
I know I checked for mastering and printing...wasn't bad at all and I even considered the
box of CD's that would be left in the closet LOL.

For sending songs to pubs and libraries a printable with the songs titles and contact info on the label is all that is needed....

the advice I have received is NOT to use the ones with the stick on labels. They will sometimes come off and then you have a non-Identified disk. Or worse, they come off or flake off in the player messing it up.

Print you own with an inexpensive printer. They look as good as you can design the graphics, and you can print only what you need.

They ain't bad Herb. Twenty minutes or less and to me not having to deal with
ink or anything is a good thing.

Sounds like me and Bub would down a few six packs and have fun burning a bunch and not even know or care about how long it took LOL.

I believe that getting a CD with my Sharpie scrawling on it is more "special" than just a pretty cover that anyone (with the right equipment) can do.

(at least that's my rationale )
