what is i-Lok?
hi, what is i-lok? why do some plug-ins require it and most (that i know of) don't? it seems like it just adds $30 to the price of the first plug in that you need to buy it for. why would a company require an extra expense to their customers in order to use their product? thanks

Short Answer: It's a way to protect their software against piracy. It's a USB flash drive looking device that you plug into a USB port and holds your licenses. The software won't run unless you have the ilok dongle plugged in. Note that you can actually load a bunch of licenses on a single ilok. Also, some users prefer a dongle based system as you can port your licenses among several machines by simply moving the dongle with you. It can also make reinstalling software (after an OS change) faster than C/R or the like. In the past, some systems had serious issues with ilok, in particular. Those problems were solved long ago, but many won't touch products that use ilok because of those issues in the past. EDIT: I use an ilok and it's never given me any trouble. I use it on a desktop with plenty of USB ports.

What is i-lock? Here is the basic information about i-lock, When you run the iLok-protected software, it looks for your license on your attached iLok. I use it on a desktop with plenty of USB ports.Generally software publishers use the iLok to provide secure protection for their software.

Can anyone confirm if the USB key that comes with Propellerhead's RECORD is an iLok or would function as an iLoK for devices that say they need one - such as Antares EFX?

Somerset Can anyone confirm if the USK key that comes with Propellerhead's RECORD is an iLok or would function as an iLoK for devices that say they need one - such as Antares EFX? No, it's not the same. The key that comes with Record is a Syncrosoft Codemeter Stick. It is not the same nor can it function in place of an ilok for products that require ilok. It can however be used for products that require a Syncrosoft Codemeter Stick.

I decided not to get the Antares EFX special offer.

If you need to buy an iLok, I would make sure you buy the new iLok. It holds many more license and I have heard some New plug-ins and other softway might only work with the new iLok. Devil-Lok will work with either. You can buy an iLok at music stores and other locations. This is the iLok website. There is a picture of the new "slimmer" version of the iLok. http://www.ilok.com/ Kevin

An ilok is a USB key you plug into your computer when you use Pro Tools that holds all the liscenses for your plugins. Ilok is the easternmost town and municipality in Croatia. It lies on a hill overlooking the Danube river, It enables a user of licensed software to use that software on different machines without having to register each one with response string.

Digidesign has transitioned all of our plug-in software copy protection from floppy drive based key disks to copy protection authorizations that reside on the iLok technology provide by PACE.

its a device that hogs up your usb ports, gives you problems and cost extra money..all because good people like us that pay for our software have to pay the price for people who dont pay for software.
