what is this vocal effect?
I always wanted to know how to do this one effect...but i have no example to show you so this might be tough....
although i can point you to an album, track and time.....Tool - Opiate / song - Opiate, 4:04
ok, this effect happens before the vocal is spoke. it seems to grab a touch of what is coming up ahead, and reverse delays it??? I'm sorry i cannot explain it....I'll try to find a better example..
but in tools example - he says "we both want...." The "we" was clearly there just before he spoke it, filtered, and what i would call swelling around..then it pans from left to right in the blink of an eye.
is this some trick to delay? how do you take what is coming up and move it back before it happens?

Record your vocal track normally - insert a measure into the whole project right at the beginning (all tracks). Then cut/copy/paste vocal clips either from the original vocal track or re-recorded and paste them into new track(s) ahead of the main vocal track. Low volume, delays, weird pans, reverbs all can add ghosty-ness to the vocal clips relative to the main vocal. (Edit) - I know you were looking for an effect to do this. But any effect with look-ahead capability has to introduce inherent latency. (No way to actually jump forward in time). So easy to use the capabilities of a DAW to do this kind of thing.

I don't know if this is how they're doing it, but here's a cool trick to get that effect... On the vocal track, split the clip to isolate the first word of the line (where you're wanting the pre-delay). Copy that clip to a separate track and then reverse it (which I think is process>audio>reverse - sorry just going off memory). Add a delay effect to the clip (not the track) that is really wet. Bounce to clip, then reverse it again. Now you've got the delay in front, instead of behind it. Line it up to the right spot. This can turn out really cool!!

Dave's got it right.
It's called a reverse reverb. Can be used in conjunction with any other number of effects for different versions of the same spooky thing.
Be sure you print the effected track 100% wet. You'll want to play with the reverb decay time....sometimes works better with a longer reverb than you might think to get the swell to be both audible and to make sense with the tempo of the song.
Then, you can slide the effect back and forth in time to change the effect, etc. Also using automated panning, eq, volume, etc. on the effect track.
Takes some time, but very cool when you get it right.

I just went to listen to the song and effect in question....
That's absolutely a reverse reverb. Sounds like a fairly quick reverb. Like a pretty live room reverb with a short tail, flipped around backwards as described by Dave.

that is so awesome....i never would have thought to do that.... i'm impressed. I had such a hard time trying to explain it. and now this makes total sense. I just didn't know what i was hearing..but always loved how it sounded. So this is a recording trick, not something you can produce at a live show....either way, I got a new trick to play with..

That trick is cool! Ok, ok... maybe I am overly amazed because I am noob. Does anybody know if there is a book (or other printable source) that is full of tricks like this?

I like to print things before they happen such as is this topic. Like a pre-delay if that makes sense. But, Dave's idea is great. Never thunk of that one.
