what midi controller

I'm going to upgrade my midi controller I can't get anything bigger than 61 keys (my custom built desk wont fit anything bigger) unless everyone strongly reccomends it then I'll rebuild the desk. I want velocity sensitivity, I'm not sure if I eally need knobs and faders what do you all think? Also I am not sure if I should get a non-weighted a semi weighted or a fully weighted. I am looking to spend between 150 to 250. What should I get?

did some research and it's between the m-audio axiom 61 for $300 or the m-audio keystation 61es and buying seperatly the trigger finger (to make up for lost pads/knobs/faders) for a combined price of probably about $300 as well. What should I get it's not a portable studio so the larger footprint of the later choice is not an issue. the first choise has aftertouch...is this used a lot? really important?

trigger finger's got more drum pads, but less faders. I don't know about you, but I use faders more than anything on a control surface. Just a thought...

Meanwhile, I have the keystation pro 88 and while I like the feel of it and I like all the faders/knobs/buttons, the construction doesn't seem nearly as solid as my Axiom-49. Don't know if it's the same with the 61 es. I would definitely play them both at your local music store first...

Personally, I would go with the Axiom-61, but I would recommend that you make the decision based on the number of drum pads and faders you think you would like to have. Also, it's nice having everything in one unit on my desk...

I use a Fatar. Great weighted action. Very simple bread and butter controler. It plays like a good piano (or at least close)...............

I agree on the Fatar for a piano feel. I have an 88 that plays excellent.
But for more expressive synth work, the Novation's controls are very nice. Several of the major music magazines have noted a quality that sets them above the rest. They are on the edge of midi/PC adaptability also.
