what other DAWS have you tried?
hello sonar folks! A friend of mine has told me that i should check out a newer DAW called "Bitwig" as it's pretty simply (and stable) Have any of you folks tried Bitwig? I have purchased sonar home studio and finding my way thru the basics no problem..as long as i work thru the updates. The other DAW I have worked with is studio one and there are many great things about it that I enjoyed, BUT if I want to edit an mp3 or add a vst I can't do that with my $100.00 program but could pay $85.00(?) for an upgrade..yikes.. so..$35.00 for home studio can do all that! Crazie? The studio one interface is beautiful and easy to navigate as well as stable..from my experiences. I do think Sonar Plat. is going to be a great move to my everyday daw... cheers!

I've tried or own most of them. From Logic going back to Logic 4 and 5, Cubase SX 1, 2 and 3, Reaper 4, Digital Performer. Traction 7, Bitwig. Studio one 3 and 2, FL Studio, Samplitude X2, PT Free. And others I can't recall at the moment. I started with CW on Professional 8, Pro Audio 9. Sonar 1 XL with every update and upgrade through to today. I like Studio One 3 but I love Sonar Platinum.

Cubasis (it ran on steam power at the time) then Tracktion V 1 and 2, then Sonar since about 2007. I tried an updated Tracktion version recently and my judgement was probably clouded by nostalgia like an ex you've never properly got over, but it's still great.

I use AbletonLive 9 for actual performance, and would be fine for production also.

I tried Reaper - twice, 6 months apart. On both occasions I could not get sound out of it even though the meters were dancing. I figured it was me / my setup but try as I might I could never get it to make a sound. Meh. Sonar's always been good to me and so here I am. Lately it's been a bit rocky but ya know.

We digitaze tapes and vinyl and I'm also working with Steinberg WaveLab and Adobe Audition - expensive software. But I only use them for batch-processing. Although WaveLab is one of the best audio-editing and mastering software, I use Sonar. Because Sonar is the fastest editor for restoring and editing thousends of hours of audio. And also very stable. Wavelab and Adobe Audition are also crashing - in contrast to Sonar that is rock solid.

Started with a very simple DAW called Kristal Audio ( http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/) which eventually became Studio One (although I've never used Studio One). Have used Audacity but didn't really care for it. We use Reaper 5 at our church and it does the job. Started with Cakewalk using Home Studio 2002 and been updating/upgrading on and off with them ever since through Platinum Lifetime. What I have found is that each DAW does pretty much the same thing, but they each do it in a different way. You need to find the DAW that works well for what you want to do and how you want to do it. For me, that is Sonar. YMMV.

I use REAPER from time to time and I have AIR Ignite just for throwing out ideas. But, I started with Cakewalk back in 1993, and I'm more comfortable in SPLAT than anything else I've tried. It's my DAW of choice when the serious music starts.

I've been using Reaper for 10 years - but various annoyances had me testing Sonar and Samplitude the last few weeks. Both are great programs but I will stick with Reaper for a while longer at least. What I have discovered is consistent with this MandolinPicker What I have found is that each DAW does pretty much the same thing, but they each do it in a different way. You need to find the DAW that works well for what you want to do and how you want to do it. For me, that is Sonar. YMMV.
Once you get the features you need (eg in my case has to support putting sound to video) workflow is everything - if you gel with the basic design then stick with that DAW until something changes and you get solidly stuck or frustrated. If I'd bought Sonar first I would not change to Reaper, same for Samplitude. Not sure I'd recommend Reaper to someone more or less starting out. All the major DAWs are amazing -

I have used SONAR all versions, Pro Tools 12, Studio One 2, Cubase SX4 I think, Reaper (whatever the previous version was) Digital Performer (can't remember which version) and of course the old Pro Audio 9, and Guitar Tracks. I currently own SONAR Platinum, Pro Tools 12, and Studio One 2. I used Cubase when I was taking audio engineering classes at a local college. I used Digital Performer when I was hired to come in to the band's natural environment and produce on site. I used reaper when working with a long distance client who insisted on it. I use Pro Tools on occasion just to see how it operates, to stay current and competent with it, and to transfer Pro Tools sessions that come in from clients over to SONAR for mixing and mastering. I received Studio One for free from a sponsor of a corporate client. I tried it out and didn't like it so I never reinstalled it on my new rig. I use SONAR because I absolutely love it. For me it completely disappears as a tool and kind of becomes an extension of my mind. It works how I think and sounds great. So it is what I choose to use, even after having so much exposure to so many different DAWs.

Hi. I have beside SONAR (I started with Pro Audio 9, and Am now on latest Sonar Platinum) personally used: Cubase, Nuendo and Pro Tools over some time. Tried Studio1, Reaper, Audacity and Ableton a bit. One of the bands I play in record in Logic Pro, and another in Wavelab. We all make music, and collaborate the best we can I'm still trying to convince them to switch... All the best.

When I was looking for a DAW, I had one probably uncommon but strict for me requirement: the ability to install it on at least 4 different computers. Without dongles. Nothing "gray", that was just the distribution of instruments (mostly MIDI based) in my flat (I am home hobby player and I could not fit drums, DP and guitar(s) into the room with my primary computer). I was surprised that such requirement has immediately narrowed possible choice. After reading a lot and taking my needs into account, I was close to buy 2x Abletons... but why should one home hobbyist pay two times for "pro" software just because he has small rooms in his flat and can not dedicate one of them for music only? At that time I have tried many free VST(i) and I was not fascinated from them. Starting a "collection" from scratch was looking far from cheap. And then I have "found" Sonar, I had 8.5 LE from my keyboard and there was an invitation to join X1 "club". That was lucky time, when 8.5LE->X1 Studio->X1 Producer price was unbeatable. Looking back, I do not think there was better for me way to go. Except Piano VSTi (which still has to be written... I have demoed almost all existing), that package had/has everything required for my n00b level and much more. Some "extras" I could buy with big discounts, thanks to included "LE" versions. What I could not find/buy, I have... written myself

I've used all of the Cake versions from P8 - current, minus X1 & X2 I've used Reaper quite a bit. I like it Cubase to me is like trying to think in a foreign language I don't know Studio One 2 & 3 Artist versions make me scratch my head a lot Tracktion 5 is pretty good for straight up audio. I use this with one particular collab partner SONAR Plat is my favorite. It matches my thinking the closest and is visually laid out the best for me. Reaper is a close second. I have to use replacement menus, a set of extensions and a replacement theme though. It has a few things I wish SONAR had, but ... SONAR is home base. I'm sure if I had as many hours with Cubase and Studio One I would be more cozy with them. IMO, you're doing the right thing by trying out all of what's available. DAWs are like instruments. You can't have just one, they all take effort to learn to use and some feel right-some don't. And don't get frustrated (easier said than done) when the DAW doesn't do things the way you think it should. Focus on the task at hand and learn to use the tool the way it's designed to be used. Lastly, evaluate the forums for the DAWs you are considering. Having a group of knowledgeable people that love to help is as important as the feature list.

I own Studio One 2 but don't use it...inability to create track templates put me off immediately; Sonar's power in that regard is huge and I love the rolling improvements. Tried to get into Ableton but my brain didn't like it. Started with Logic and Cubase back in the day...

Bob - did you create the new menus or did you download them? Didn't know Reaper had that option. Might make it a bit easier as I go between Sonar and Reaper.

I think that all DAWs basically accomplish the same thing, but with variations in the tools and workflows. Another thing in common is that they have steep learning curves. They are complex software applications, and it is amazing what they are capable of now, compared with a few years ago. Unless your job requires you to be proficient in several DAWs, it would be best to pick just one and then learn it thoroughly. Most DAWs offer demos or trials, so pick some that you like, and try each one for one or two weeks. Then decide which one works best for you. I have an older version of Ableton Live that is no longer installed, and I have tried Reaper, but I find that it is not very intuitive. I also have StudioOne 3 Prime, but don't click with that GUI. If I played live, I might consider Ableton again, or Bitwig, but not for home studio stuff. I have Ignite and Band-in-a-Box to use as musical scratchpads, but since they are not really DAWs, there is no overlap. You can export tracks from those tools into a DAW, and they offer features not found in most DAWs, so they are complementary. Overall, I am very satisfied with Sonar (now on lifetime Platinum), and it does everything I need it to do and then some.

I tried Pro Tools, Cubase ,Studio One ; Bitwig ,Logic, AbletonLive. Which DAW for which user is nowadays a questiion of workflow. Splat has imo the best workflow and is very easy to learn. If I had to choose another DAW, I would take Cubase for handmade music with few synths cause is slowly getting as easy as Sonar. The Steinberg interfaces include the Cubase AI version which is a good starting point. For EDM,House ,Techno aso I would choose Ableton cause it´s as stable as a rock. Never heard of a "Live" performance interrupted by an Ableton Live crash. And as Elepha 3 mentioned, on a MAC Logic has the best workflow aso. I recommend the test versions of all the Apps available to find out which workflow fits best to your needs.

ProTools - not versatile enough and too expensive. FL Studio - I use occasionally to create drum loops and modern synth tracks. Cubase - I had too many stability issues => went to SONAR which worked very well with my system (in mid 2000's). Cool Edit Pro and Adobe Audition - it was good in early 2000's for audio but not for MIDI. Now I use Audition for editing and mastering but not for multi-tracking. Reaper - stability issues and not as versatile as SONAR. Studio One - built-in Melodyne is attractive but SONAR has it, too. Audio engine is robust, they say but SONAR's has been improved a lot in the past 16 months. SONAR rocks. :)

Mixing concepts transfer just fine between daws.
Sometimes, while using another daw you discover something you didn't understand before.
I use RME tools and Linux Ubuntu studio in addition to Sonar. I am by far the most efficient with sonar, but it isn't my only tool.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I do use the Mixbus for final mastering. It has that secret sauce that makes my mixes better. I believe it was bapu that pointed me there when it was on sale and he was right it does sound better in the end even if I don't use any plugins and just import stereo mix and export the final result.

Fascinating! I was not aware of this. Apparently Harrison Mixbus is a proprietary extension of the open–source Ardour project. This seems to be the secret sauce: Mixbus enhances Ardour by providing critical mixing functions in a knob-per-function interface called "True Analog Mixing"(tm). https://community.ardour.org/node/3011http://www.soundonsound.c...iews/harrison-mixbus-3

I've tried, and am proficient, with all of them. But what I use is: - SONAR for the studio, when travelling (thank you, WASAPI!!), and for 80% of mastering
- Ableton Live and Traktor for live performance
- Studio One for album assembly (and the other 20% of mastering)
Honorable mention to: - Sound Forge and Wavelab when I need to do deep waveform surgery
- Pro Tools, because people give me Pro Tools sessions (which I convert immediately to SONAR
) - Logic Pro X on my MacBook Pro
Biggest missed opportunity: Sound Forge/Sony (now Magix) Acid. If it had been given some love and a Matrix view, there would be no Ableton Live, FL Studio, or Bitwig because Acid would have been unbeatable. Most intuitive interface: Passport Master Tracks Pro (although it was MIDI-only).

I stated with Cubase on a school computer back way back in 2000. After that I tried out FL Studio 3.5, Reason, and Ableton. I just couldn't get my head around Reason at all and had as many troubles learning Ableton, but ran well with FL Studio. At one point I've even tried out Logic Pro, it was alright, I'm just not a Mac guy. Then when I finally started getting some gear the M Box Mini came with Pro Tools and the keyboard I got came with a copy of Sonar 6 L E and I just took to Sonar and have since upgraded to Sonar Platinum. I would still use FL to be portable until the last couple of updates to Sonar made it run flawlessly on my Surface Pro.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that loved Master Tracks Pro. That was the easiest midi system I ever used. I've looked at most of the products mentioned, but Sonar is the best thing since Master Tracks for me. My hardware also seems to like it more than the competition. When I read about others having Sonar crash issues it reminds me how just about everything other than Sonar runs on my system. Maybe that's why I stuck with Sonar.
Regards, John I want to make it clear that I am an Eedjit. I have no direct, or indirect, knowledge of business, the music industry, forum threads or the meaning of life. I know about amps. I started out in the hardware realm and my first introduction to software was Cubase which seemed to suit composers more than engineers. Pro tools brought me on the journey into software mix engineering but like others I got tired of the seemingly arrogant approach to its users. Sonar for me replicated the mind-set and workflow of engineers from my era best, although I still use Pro tools reluctantly and Ableton willingly for transferring stuff into a format suitable for someone to take on the road reliably. If I had a mac I would jump on Logic. I do use Audacity only for its capability of capturing streaming audio in the simplest most effective way. I use Ozone advanced for mastering/post work not Sonar. Sonar has by far has the best inclusive vendor hosted forums, even if occasionally you wish people had RTFM before posting questions for the first time.
Sonar Platinum - Windows 10 Pro 64bit - AMD FX 8150 processor - 16Gb RAM - 27" Monitor (it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it)
