what the heck is this?

I'm setting up my new DAW.  it's an i5 2500K, 8G DDR3 dual channel, running win7 home premium 64bit.  this is sonar 8.5PE, 32bit version.

I see this pop up whenever I try to start sonar.  it runs the vst scanner, then just before the program loads I get this.  so - how do I even answer a question like this???  anyone else seen this?
EDIT: more info:  if I click NO then sonar closes = it's not in the PROCESSES list of the Task Manager
if I click YES, then sonar IS in the processes list of the task manager, but it never actually loads.

    That's hilarious!

What if you start it up without doing the scan? (Change the ScanVSTOnStartup registry key's value to 0 in HKCU\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\8.5)

I'm theorizing that the message is coming from a plugin.

Did that clear up for you, Beagle? - If so, this thread made me curious why you've been running the VST scan every time you boot up Sonar?  --That would drive me bonkers, it takes so long.  Without it, Sonar opens in seconds. - You don't need to do a registry edit to change the default though - I can't get to Sonar at the moment, but I think it's a Global setting?

Randy - this is a brand new install on a new machine.  this is the first time I've tried to run it on this install.  since default has scan on start up ON and I can't get sonar to load, then there is no way to stop the scan except by editing the registry.

bit - nope.  same results.  it's sonar, not a plugin.

Oh, sorry, I get it now.   What a drag, Beagle!-- You'll have to go through an un-install/re-install routine then?

My guess is that it might have something to do with a sample rate mis-match.
Don't know why I think that, just a gut feeling.

    Did you try this:
In Control Panel>Advanced System Settings> Advanced>Performance; Set Visual Effects to "best performance" so it gets rid of transparent dialog box backgrounds, etc. and maybe the actual message might be visible.

The "best performance" visual effects thing is what I do to all my computers, it gives them a little more oomph!

If the messagebox is originating from within SONAR, wouldn't it say so in the title bar?

You can sometimes determine which process owns a messagebox by checking the task manager while the prompt is onscreen. If it's something other than SONAR, it should show up as an entry in the task list. Familiarize yourself with the task list before you start up SONAR so that you'll be able to spot any new entries.

Since this is a new machine, have you verified that your audio interface works with, say Windows Media Player? The message could be from your driver, perhaps telling you it's missing something. When you click Yes you're saying go ahead, ignore the error - but the driver still fails, causing SONAR to hang. Just thinkin' out loud.

lol - well, yeah, I would think it would say "sonar" in the title bar, but it doesn't even say what the message is, so how can I trust that it didn't come from sonar?  there's no text in the box at all!

as far as my audio interface working - yeah, it works with Sonar 8 (32bit) and Sonar X1 (both 32 and 64bit work) and Windows Media Player.  sonar 8.5 (32bit is the only one I installed) is the only one I'm having problems with.

gustabo - I can't find that setting.  I'm using win7, there's no "advanced system settings"

I poked around the display settings but couldn't find it.  I'm new to win7, sorry.

bit - willy had me delete all of the sonar settings in the %appdata%\cakewalk and restart, then the window pops up with SONARPDR in the title, but still no text.  I click OK then it runs the profiler and then does the "personalization" which copies files into that folder above.

then the window pops up again without a title.

but I'm working with willy at tech support to resolve it.  I'll keep you guys posted.

Try this, click on start and type "advanced system settings" in the bottom left "Search programs and files" box and "View advanced system settings" should appear in the list above where you're typing.
Click on that and a "System Properties" window will open.
Then click on "settings" in the "performance" section, and select "Adjust for best performance".

I think this is what turns the "eye candy" off.
It's been a while so I'm going off memory now.

hi Steve, thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work.  in fact that's basically the same thing as deleting those folders/files in the appdata folder above like Willy suggested.  it accomplishes the same thing, just FYI.

Maybe it was some weirdness due to the dreaded C+++ 2005 that has to be installed as part of the program....just a guess.

well, good guess, but I would think C++ would have affected S8 & X1 as well which it didn't.

More likely a file was not installed the first time around. I've always wondered why  SONAR does not write an install log like most applications.
