when i monitor and rehearse

should i be singing into a microphone or should i be singing without a mic while the music is being played back through the monitors or a set of headphones?

if i monitor with headphones, will i be able to hear my singing if i don't use a microphone?

how do the pros or home studio recording artists usually rehearse vocally?

Its just rehearsing, so you can do whatever you want. For me, I always use a mic, and I record it too. I always do this through headphones to avoid mic feedback that could happen using my monitors. The reason I record is that I just never know when I'm going to get a really nice take, and also to be able to go back and listen to check for timing, pitch, or mic technique issues.

Seriously....I only rehearse for live shows.

    As Randy said.....

I never "rehearse" for recordings.  I like to work it all out while I'm also recording it, because quite often I capture something brilliant that was not really intentional.

It depends on what the intent is. I have to "learn"
the songs that I write. If you were doing a cover
there would be much less "learning" because
your already familiar with it. but to perform
(me anyway) I have to learn how to perform my
song. So I may just pick up the guitar and
and sing it until i'm more confident.

However as the above guys say I too now
just record even the learning part. Sometimes
the first takes are the best.
