which channel is note written on?

Using XP, Roland RD700

Used to be, when I inserted a note in staff view, it would go on whatever channel that staff was assigned to (3 for basss, 10 for drums, etc.), and would make a sound commensurate (like that word?) with that channel.

Now everything goes on channel 1, and I have to change them note by note, which gets tiresome.

What am I doing different?

    Figgered it out myself:

    You have to have the channel declared on the output . I only had it on the input.
