which do you think is better Music Creator 6 or Cubase?
hello just asking what package you think is best? Cubase or MC6? my main aim is to demo my songs and i want to add virtual instruments to fill out the songs. And i need to change chords on the virtual piano for instance. Any comments are appreciated. jason

I can only speak for MC5 but I enjoy the Sonar/Cakewalk functionality much more than I did the Cubase workflow. I was a frustrated Cubase user who bought MC5 for some of the plug-ins, being that it was a reasonable price. Within a week I ditched Cubase altogether. Now does that mean MC5 or even MC6 is better than the top of the line Cubase DAW? Not at all, BUT I found myself actually recording music as opposed to fixing computer/compatibility issues all the time. It seems every time I opened Cubase there was a new mystery for me to solve and I'd spend more time doing technical stuff than I did recording. As a songwriter wanting to get my stuff laid down I was so frustrated by the time everything was ready to go that I was to aggravated to record successfully. So from that standpoint it IS better. Now if you're talking MC5 vs. an LE edition of Cubase then I'd take MC5/6 over it in a heartbeat. The LE version of Cubase is very limiting. For example it wouldn't allow me to set up my ezdrummer to multiple outputs, so I was forced to place all the instruments on a stereo track or copy/paste the part to new tracks and mute everything but the single part I wanted to hear. Even that had it's limitations as the "Room" and "Overhead" controls no longer controlled the entire mix. I've tried both the LE version of Cubase and CB5 and still prefer the Sonar/Cakewalk brands for their functionality and ease of use. I'm hoping to soon upgrade to X1 Producer but it won't be because I'm not really happy with MC5. I simply want the additional tools.

I had the LE version of CUbase once upon a time, and could not get it to work properly. It was confusing to me. I standardized on Cakewalk many years back and have used it ever since I got the first version of CWP8.

Well, I suppose I might be admittedly biased, but I am partial to Cakewalk. I also tried a Cubase LE version a few years ago. It seemed to work ok, but the logic of Sonar Home Studio 4(esentially a beefier version of MC3/4) made more sense to me at the time. MC6 is based on Sonar X1, and is a somewhat different format. None of have actually seen MC6 in action yet, but I suspect it is fairly decent. Does Cubase have a version at the same price point as MC6? For the money, MC has been a great place to get your feet wet. If you find you need more capability, the upgrade path is reasonable. You have limited tech support with MC, but you do have this forum, probably the friendliest support around. Personally, for somebody just starting out, I would recommend MC6. If you like it, great. If you don't, you're only out $50.

Lots of good points here, and I agree that the user experience is a lot more fluid in the Cakewalk world than in the Cubase world. Even after an honest effort to pick up Cubase, I found myself getting a lot more done with fewer clicks in Sonar. And, all non-LE versions of Cubase require a nasty dongle. The comparison between Cubase and Music Creator, though, is not entirely valid. There is no Cubase product in the same grade/price range as Music Creator. The lowest-cost Cubase is Cubase Elements, which is roughly in the same grade and price range as Sonar X1 Essential.

Jason, I have really liked the Music Creator line for it's simplicity, as yevester alluded to and of course, it is very inexpensive. I've had it for over 3 years and have created some pretty cool songs with it.

Herb is living testimony that more is not always better. I watch on this forum and others people that clamor for feature after feature to be added to a DAW software. I hold that most of those features are totally unnecessary. Most folks could do just fine with a solid basic program. Heck spend time recording, not programming. The most important element in all of this is being comfortable. Find a platform you like and use it. get familiar, and settle in and go for it. If you can define your process that helps a lot. For me i like to build a base track with drums and bass, from there add what i can play live and then polish off with synths and other kinds of tracks to fill out the sound. Some start with a click track, some with looped sounds, others a midi bed. It does not matter. Just find your spot and go to work. For $50 MC has always been a great value.

Gee, I come to the MC forum to read the new posts and try to help the new folks with their problems or learn new things. Lots of new posts but they're all SPAM. I'm so disappointed.
