why are my drums out of sync?

I'm using X1 Producer Expanded, latest release.  I'm running MIDI thru Superior Drummer using the NY Avatar kit, the MIDI is actually going thru a drum map which I got from the toontrack user's area.  if I don't use the drum map, it doesn't hit the correct kit pieces - the input of the map is GM, I believe (Band in a Box generated MIDI).

my drums are out of sync depending on the latency I've set on my MOTU.  for 128 samples, it's pretty close to being correct, but at 1024 samples, it's way off - they hit way late.

I'm running in ASIO driver mode, I thought the delay compensation worked correctly for all VST's in ASIO mode?  I've checked preferences and the 'use ASIO reported latency" is checked.

what is going on with this??

beagle when i get somethng squirely like this happen the first thing i do is power down and reboot my computer.
i know you probably think that wont solve your problem but ive found lately issues that are un-explainable are quickly being solved by a cold star(just reboot your computer).its possible some setings is corrupt in ram and needs to be reset,i dont know.
    just do it.

if your waiting for an answer why not try it in the meantime?
let me know how you make out.

Beeptster- the map wouldn't cause latency, but I did try sending the MIDI directly to Superior and it still has latency problems - I should have said that before, sorry.

chuck - I did try that also, no love.

Tom - thanks for the suggestion, but it's not off.  I tried turning it off and that didn't work either.

Are the notes in time, sounds like a silly question, but I had a case where all the notes were slowly shifting out of time, so it all started in tune but was way out (by about 10-100ms) by the end of the song.

Have you tried freezing the track to see what happens there. (if it IS the latency comp, it should, in theory, all play back in time when frozen).

lol- well, I never assume I'm above a stupid error, so your suggestion isn't that silly!  but freezing it DID work.  I tried that just now and came back to report that freezing the synth would put everything back in time.  but I don't understand why the PDC wasn't working correctly in the first place.

I guess this is a good enough work around, so problem is sort of solved, but I hope I don't have to do this again in the future!  and for what it's worth, I have dozens, maybe hundreds of projects with superior in them and this is the first time this has happened!

    thanks Freex

coming in from left field here, but I remember somewhere in the back of my head reading something here a few days ago about the asio reported latency being incorrect and needing manual calibration and setting, along with a procedure for doing it.   I don't recall much more, it was a tangential tidbit I found while searching for something else...

In the past, I've noticed sync problems when using high latency settings - even with Cakewalk products.  I could never get past 60ms without some sort of slop in the softsynth.

I've actually had a few instances in three different projects where my AUDIO drums would be out of sync with my frozen Session Drummer samples that I triggered using Audiosnap's midi copy. Shut X1 down and open it again fixed it.

Since freezing it worked..... How heavy is the processing load?  FX, synths, number of tracks running synths etc......

I have noticed some sync issues in my DAW when I run really heavy processing loads in real time.  Things in some tracks get out of sync slightly and sometimes a restart solves it and sometimes I have to process to audio or freeze things to lighten the load.

dave - I keep my latency high anytime except during recording (and then only if the person I'm recording requests to hear themselves thru the headphones), so I'm not sure why this project is different from any of my others.

guitarhacker - I do have some FX on the drum bus (all outputs are routed to that bus), but at that time I had no FX on any of the tracks themselves, only on the bus.  I did try disabling the FX on the bus and it did not change anything.

Could another plug be causing the problem. I have experienced timing issues before when the project had Perfect Space on a buss. If I disabled Perfect Space the project would work fine. I con;t remember if that was with 8.5 or X1.

thanks tom - I might try disabling all plugins one by one and see if I can find a culprit.

I've had drum hits fail to play at fairly high latency settings in Superior Drummer. Especially with Perfect Space or Reverberate. If that happens, I disable those plugs until I can freeze the tracks, which ends the problem.
