wider

up for some shoegaze? mix might be too "hot" and a bit too muddy as a final but I'm at ear fatigue now so giving it a rest and posting it anyway. no lyrics. just musical thoughts as i send my teenage son off across the country on his first jaunt into the world without his fearful parents to hound him to safety every few feet. thanks for listening.

This is not the kind of music I usually listen to, hence why I should refrain from commenting. Anyhow a few general comments would be:
I miss some variations in the song, that compared to the lenghts ot the song make it difficult (for me) to hear it out to the end.
I kind of like the tempo and the feel.

Mix-wise, again it´s not my genre, what caught my attention was the drumpart, I would tighten them up, but that just me.
    Just my few cents

I've always liked the odd "shoegaze" track and I actually like this, as an idea for doing more with, in terms of vocals particularly. Stick a bit of Elizabeth Fraser's vocals in there and we'd be sorted

I like the "post rock" track you have up too...

I'd have the percussion sounds louder - they're kind of masked by all the guitars.

I am hearing the elements of the song not as sharp as I would have mixed them. If you were going for a psychedelic kind of mix then I can see why you did it like that. The guitar is the main player but it doesn't seem to really be going anywhere as in a structured song. More aimless etherial? I guess I didn't know your goals, so maybe these WERE your goals?...seems to be more of a showcase for the guitar.

The mix is hot on my system. I'm glad I had the volume to 1/4 before I played it.

    thanks for the input everyone.

synkrotron: fraser is a long time favorite of mine. her vocal style is definitely a take off point for me for sonic qualities. that "post rock" piece has a video that goes along with it: http://www.frostforus.com/
    'wider' will too eventually.
kev: thanks for that. i always struggle with the percussion. constantly going back and forth with where it sits in the mix. sometimes i get it correct and sometimes just can't get it all. and for each song it's totally different so i cannot just take a previous mix and apply it to the next song. like i mentioned: i was at ear fatigue zone so at this point i have almost tuned the drums out of my mind. i'll have to go revisit them when feeling fresh.
starise: i have difficulty deciding which guitar parts to bring forward vs sending to the back or side to side. it's a bigger problem when i end up with 2,3, or 4 different melodies to play with so i just stick it all in there and let serendipity take over. guitars as a showcase doesn't interest me as much as the tonal quality and interaction of melodies over competing chords. maybe that is by definition a "showcase" i guess, but not in the traditional sense. not being terribly proficient i end up with some sonic confusion that i personally enjoy. and i do tend to write stuff to sit more in the background of my day so that on-and-on-and-on quality fits that mindset. i have been told before that "the music doesn't really go anywhere" and that ends up being a product of the process and fairly intentional, so mission accomplished???

will hit the mix board again later when feeling less ambivalent about it all. thanks again for your time folks.

I've always wondered what "shoegaze" meant. Is it always this slow in tempo? It's not half bad! It's got a certain mesmerizing quality.

I like the guitars, they really stand out, with a few different tonal variations. The snare sounds like it was recorded in a thousand stairwells, so that must be your intent. You wouldn't work as hard to bury it that way otherwise.

I thought it was a sonic treat, nice going!

    cheers,

took 3 months to redo, and such and then the video guy did another 2 months on it and then it took me 3 months to get back to this place, but, here is a diff rendition that still maintains the shoegaze nature with guitar washiness and the snare in a water tank. also tried to take the "heat" out of the mix and reduce the mud.

I took a break from it during November. Came back to relisten in December and found that there are several sections, one being near the beginning, that are severely out of tune and there are timing issues that I didn't notice during those 5 months of redo, but the video was already in the can and now I am sick of it. So, apologies in advance for that. Already moving on so I think I will just live with it.
Thanks again everyone. I do think your input gave me a nice push to make something better.
