wierd dropouts during playback....

Hi Folks, I've dealt with audio dropouts in the past, but this one is proving difficult to figure out.  Runnig a 10 track piece, 1 midi track driving 3 separate Session Drummer tracks (kick, snare, hat).  Each audio track has an avg of 2-3 plugins per track.  I'm running on a top of the line rack mount Creation Station form Sweetwater sound, I7 processor, 6 gig ram, 500GB software drive, and 1000GB audio drive, both high speed SATA that  I purchased last August.  The OS is windows 7.

As I'm playing back, I notice the performance meter showing 8 processor bars, cool.  The uncool pat is the randomly, all 8 bars shoot up to 100%+ capacity and the playback skips.  Last night I noticed the problem during recording as well.  The recorded track actually seems fine even though an event occured during recording.

I've tried increasing buffer size, monitoring CPU activity with Task Manager, Using a utility that shows that you may have a bad acting driver, etc.... nothing seems to help eliminate the problem.  Even safe mode with only cakewalk supplied plugins loaded still exhibits the problem.

ANy helpful suggestions are welcome.

Kind regards,
roger (aka Saxawaken)

Try running a DPC Latency checker to see if there are any spikes showing up without a load.

    Information and download available here:(free)
    http://www.thesycon.de/de...check.shtml#background

Run this without Sonar running to see if you are getting spikes from background processes or hardware problems.

You aren't using a Green hard drive by any chance?

Thanks for the tip.  I Ran DPC for 2 hours 50% no load.  When running X1, I observed X1's performance meter peaking all 8 processors, but nothing registered on DPC.  Highest recorded latency was 199us.

not sure whaat you mean by Green hard drive???

    Thanks!!!

A green drive is a variable speed drive like the Western Digital Caviar Green. Green drives never spin up to 7200rpm which is often a problem.

Try deleting 1 plug-in(all instances of it) 1 at a time to see if you can find the source.  Before deleting the plug-ins save a preset so you don't have to readjust it when you bring it back in.  If you can't find the source of the problem list all plug-ins you are using with the project.  Possible suspects would be the Linear EQ or Compressor but many others could be involved.  If you locate the culprit, then bouncing the track down(freezing) may solve the problem(provided you are at the stage you want to do that)

Good idea,  I tried opening in safe mode with inconclusive results.  But, I like your idea better.  I'll also post a list of plugins being used as suggested if I still can't nail it down.  The problem is intermittent which makes it difficult to nail down, however, it seems to be something internal to the Sonar X1 project.

    Thanks!!!
