working mix: "First Tracks"

https://app.box.com/s/j11yz2i30afd7szb0c9q

this is a song i've been working on for some time, it's kind of a happy fast-moving, grooving rock tune at first, then breaks down to a bluesy jam for the last half.
inspired by deep powder snow skiing, this song has been in my head for several years.

i recently repositioned all of my studio gear, sounds completely different in there now, and i've got a series of 4 new songs i am actively "RE-mixing" with the new acoustics in my room.
it's time for a new album. i've got a LOT of material.....
and a lot of new mix techniques i'm experimenting with, trying to simplify things quite a bit.
any comments are appreciated.

Cool rock tune!   Great playing and tone throughout.  Love the solo in the second half, sorta sounds like a cross between Robin Trower and Kenny Wayne Shepard.   And the vocals are working well.

    "Champagne powder"...   I like it.

    thanks for listening.
this is a new mix and song, so a lot of info from previous reviews of my stuff here, are going into the mixes.

these drums are Sony Acid, tho, and i cannot edit them at this point, except for eq and compression.
it's a stereo 16 bit wav file, and i'm stuck with it.
but that's ok, i like the way it sounds now.
i just can't tweak it anymore.

the lead vox i sang twice, and bring the 2nd part up just slightly below the main part, and take it completely out from time to time, to let the words be more defined.
then there is 2 and 3 part harmonies, and some of those are stacked as well.
i guess there is about 8 vocal tracks, but mostly at any given time, only 5 are up.

Not a wise suggestion Gonzo, Wookiee's are unpredictable sober, when mixed with alcohol things become... I leave that to your obviously vivid imagination.

Now what to say about this creation yours. hmmm.  Not read anything else written here so here goes.

Nice guitar playing, drums sound good though they do seem to get buried in a couple of places.  The midway transition sounded a little confused but you do appreciate the furry around the ears which can have some comb filtering affect.  Liked the vocal and the lyrics held my attention.

The production up there with most of your work, my ears did enjoy and as such I enjoyed also.  Could I tell you how to improve it very doubtfully .

Thanks for sharing it is always a pleasure

i had quite a bit this season, thank you.

the transition, hm, i say it's the 'bluesy section', but seriously, i could not label it 'blues'......
    wonder what it really is?

    backstory on song:
not only is it about getting first tracks in the winter backcountry or off piste,
it was also the very first song i recorded after i finished my custom strat build:
USACG, vintage white, alder body, bill lawrence electronics, hipshot bridge,
custom nitro paint, gibson scale length, tiltback headstock, contoured heel,
pau ferro fretboard, graduated locking tuners, master vol-tone, some cool pieces/parts.
just an all around fantastic playing and feeling guitar.
    snow strat

    Headstock front and tilt

    headstock back

    no alcohol, that's ok....
the world is full of natural stimulents.... one being the subject matter of the song.

i tried to mix the drums 'hot', but with the big room sound, there is blur.
i find that if i push drum levels too much on this one, it can swamp everything else.
seems like a balance or battle between the drums and the vox.
mid transition, i'll see what i can do to Un-confuse the middle transition.
the wav, is always the better way to listen...
especially if you can bring it into your DAW and listen thru a typical monitor setup.
my previous questions about translations thru systems, was a means to get to this point, so hearing clinical reviews is pretty cool right now..
thanks for listening. and comb that ear fur.

    rikkie
    thanks for listening rik.
you want the solo (slower, 2nd half) guitar up a bit?
    i was wondering about that,
i've had it louder, and believe it or not, softer.....

and yes, the half step tuning, i've been doing it for so long now, when i tune to standard pitch, it feels weird.
i guess that's the hendrix influence..... i believe VH, SRV, a bunch of others prefer(ed) the lower pitch as well.

Hi BB, guitar should Always be louder : ) Seriously, I would make the guitar a bit louder before the vocals come back in. There's  a good 30 sec to  turn it to 11 ; )

Nice guitar, great pickups. I modified a Tokai strat in de '80s with 2 obl500's and a obl250 in the middle.

ok, remixed last night, tweaked all the hot/cold spots.
i brightened up the 2nd half guitar part (that is all played on the neck pickup of my strat) and that helped it sit better as well.

    OBL's........
basically that 500 you mention is the predecessor to the one i have in the brige on that white strat, the one i used in this recording.

    just FYI
In 1986 Bill Lawrence(Willi Lorenz Stich) started making and selling the L-500 and other guitar pickups under his new company name OBL, located in West Germany. These pickups would also feature flat blades although wider and longer. The original L-500s were made with only Gibson guitar string spacing in mind. These new 2.225 inch blades would allow the L-500's to be used effectively in guitars with Fender string spacing as well.

This sounds like Jefferson Starship meet CSNY and then all have a party with Hendrix. Really enjoyed it. Personally, I would use different drums, but that is a personal thing.

thanks man..... and yes, great subject matter!
    LOL
laptop speakers, again, i can't imagine wanting to listen to anything over laptop speakers.
how can it sound anything better than a clock radio?
i'm serious now, i'm not pulling your leg, why not stick a set of headphones in the output at least,
i've just never heard anything off of a laptop that sounded anything but crap!!
    heheh
ok, just do me a favor, promise you'll download it and crank it thru your studio monitors at mach schnell volume,
and see if it still sounds like a decent production!!
    thanks terry.....

    rikkie,
    just for clarity...
i did not post the new mix, this is still the same mix you listened to before.
maybe there is a lesson it there somewhere...........

    scotty
that pickup, is the pickup that rikkie was talking about, not mine...
but mine came from that lineage of pickup design......
my trem bar? it just pops in,
but i add plumber's tape around the end of the bar, that snugs it up real nice.

    stevee
starship, meets csny and jam on hendrix.
hehehe, i'll take all of that!
drums, is always subjective, it'd be like putting stewart copeland's "walking on the moon' kit sound on 'when the levee breaks'.
    just add hall reverb.
    LOL

    the guitarplayer

    ha! thanks man.....

basically, the rhythms and solos on the first half were done in multiple passes,
but the 2nd half is all one take from beginning to end.
    so, it IS live!

    thanks for listening....

just as a followup to my FIRST post....

after moving my gear, i decided it wasn't enough,

and I don't really have any money for any gear right now...

but i've been wanting to change out my little KRK rokits for a while..
i've had them a long time, and know them pretty well.. but need a new perspective.

and i have material for a 3rd album, that i want to final mix on, so figured now is a good time to learn some new monitors.

    on sale, everywhere right now....

so cheap, i figured, why not?
18 months no finance charge, 14 bucks a month, 30 day return policy....

I always enjoy hearing your creations.  It inspires me to be a better player.  Great job on the transition.

I heard lots of influences in the music throughout.

Nice guitar.  You mentioned that you used the neck PU for the second half....  good choice. I have always been partial to the fatter sound I get on the neck PU on my SG....and now on the tele I have. I've never been into the twang that comes naturally from the bridge PU's.  Cranked, and with proper tone settings, the neck PU is my favorite.

    Again... nice work there

    thanks for that, GH....
i've changed the transition up a bit since i mixed this one....
i dropped the drums out, added a sparkly guitar-noise waterfall sound with 4 double tracked parts, and that bridges the breakdown into the bluesy part....

that neck pickup, just sounds really good on this particular guitar

it is a Wilde L-280 model, and honestly, as good as it sounds, i've thought about just going back to a single coil just like it, at the bridge..

but then, i'll do the more hard rock stuff with the same guitar and the bridge, and THAT sounds real honest too!
    LOL

so, i'll stick with the original intent, which was to have a schizophrenic guitar.
