wrapped 32 bit plug-ins + UAD question

... just received my Studio Cat w/ an i7 processor and Windows 7 (64 bit).

For a variety of reasons I loaded Sonar 5 (32 bit) and all of the 32 bit plug-ins I currently use (everything installed easily).  So, for all intents and purposes I am still running a 32 bit home studio.

My next step is to upgrade to Sonar 8.5-64 and bring myself into the 64 bit world.

Questions:

1) From what I understand, Sonar 8.5 (64 bit) will wrap my 32 bit plug-ins.  If I am using wrapped 32 bit plug-ins will I still be in a 64 bit environment?

2) I currently have a UAD-2 Solo on back order a Sweetwater.  If I am working in a 64 bit environment, is there any real advantage to running a UAD card (outside of the quality of the plug-ins).

Thanks,
Dave

I went through a similar transition with a new StudiCat DAW a few months ago, so here's my take on it.

    1) You will be running in 64-bit mode with 32 bit plug-ins running under BitBridge.  Each instance of BitBridge is limited in the amount of RAM available to it.  It defaults to loading all of your 32-bit plugins in one instance, but you can set it up to load in multiple instances.  I've never run out of RAM using all of my 32-bit plug-ins in one instance of BitBridge, and this is really the way the UAD plug-ins work best.

    2) I have two UAD-1 cards in my system... I really don't need the additional CPU power that they give and I'm essentially using a lot more Voxengo 64-bit plug-ins as track plug-ins these days.  It is true that they have a great sound and you may become addicted to them for that reason but I'm using them less these days.  I tend to use the Plate 140 and Dimension D on sends and then the Pultec on a couple of busses, and occasionally some of the compressors for a different flavor of compression.

The only other thing to add is that you're gonna love your StudioCat DAW.  My projects have been fairly simple guitar instrumentals with a couple of soft synths and not really too heavy on effects, but the CPU meter rarely hits 35% native CPU and 30-40% on the UAD cards and that's at 64 buffers.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

That is the whole point of buying the UAD plugs though.  I understand that there is some small benefit of pushing the process of the VST effects off to a card and that it will provide a bit better performance on the main CPU of your system (especially for older PCs).  But, when it comes down to it, I bought it for the plugs not for the cards.
