You have to install the Yamaha USB MIDI drivers on the PC.
    Current version is 3.0

    Install the driver and re-boot.
Sonar should then see the available MIDI ports.
You'll need to choose which one/s to use...

I was using the Yamaha USB drivers with my MO8 and weird stuff kept happening, so one day I asked myself why I was bothering with it at all? I hooked up 5-pin DIN MIDI cables and bagged the USB altogether. Everything works just fine.

The question is, what is the benefit of doing MIDI over USB? Backing up your settings to disk, I guess, but I use a flash drive for that. Maybe someone can suggest a good reason for the USB interface, but it was of no use to me.

If you have a Motif ES, the Sliders/Transport simulate a Mackie Control.
This can only be done via the USB connection.
BTW, I've had absolutely no trouble with the last few versions of the USB driver.
Make sure the firmware on your Yamaha keyboard is up-to-date, install the v3 driver... and you should be good to go.

I used the USB driver for my Motif 6 on my laptop since I didn't really have a choice (no standard MIDI interface), and it worked fine. OTOH, on the desktop I used before that (with a standard MIDI interface) the USB was a PITN, so I didn't bother with it. With my new DAW I do have a choice, and I've gone back to standard MIDI, at least for now.

In other words, I use whichever works best on a given system and requires the least effort on my part! There were some pretty active discussions on the Motif forums at motifator.com re the pros and cons of each. I haven't been following them for a couple years now, but at the time the consensus was "it depends -- use what works best for you and your setup". Sound familiar?

    Hi Susan,

FWIW, Since updating the the last OS/firware for the Motif ES, I've had no problems with the USB MIDI drivers.
Prior to the last OS/firmware, the driver sometimes was a bit fussy.
    But it's smooth sailing now...
If you want to use the Motif's transport control to control Sonar, you have to use the USB interface.

I have a Motif 6 "Classic", and they're no longer updating the firmware or OS for that, but I have no complaints! I still love it. I remember now struggling with the "Cakewalk Template" when I first got it several years ago. It was very rigid in terms of the track layout in SONAR, and the remote control never worked very well, even with USB, IME. It seemed like a good idea at the time...!

P.S. I got a Frontier Tranzport the other day for remote control -- talk about something just working as advertised as soon as you plug it in! I'm impressed!

    Thanks-

I've used my MO8's transport control with SONAR over MIDI. Are you saying the Motif can't do that?

Isn't that one cool product, Susan? I have mine mounted on a mic stand using a short side boom, which works great because I can control everything from inside the vocal booth.

I know the Motif ES can't emulate Mackie Control over MIDI.
Has to be over USB (kind of stupid - but true)
In any event, with the last ES OS/firmware update, USB MIDI has been rock solid.

ok the drivers been installed since my protools days.....its jus a matter of gettin them available in sonar, right now the only drivers that come up are the digi001 drivers and midi mapper, no yamaha drivers? is there a specific folder in the program files they need to be in or should i just reinstall the drivers all together? im trying to run a chain with my beat machine, motif6 classic, and now sonar 6 pe...... thats the reason for the usb midi b/c the beat machine taking up the pins and has no midi thru

On a Motif ES what buttons do you push to find the operating system version. Where do you get updates?

    Hi Max,

Here's the link to download the latest OS/firmware:
    http://www.yamahasynth.com/download/motif_series.html

The latest version is 1.08 (probably the last version - as their new workstation is being released)

Quote from the v1.08 readme file:
How to check the version of your MOTIF ES
Power on the unit while holding down the [REC] and [STORE] buttons simultaneously. The following message will appear:
    " Current Version Kernel : 1.xx
    Firm : 1.xx "
The unit's version is indicated by "Firm : 1.xx "

Definitely! I just got the mic stand adapter today, and I've still only played around with the defaults for SONAR, but I'm *hoping* to have some real time this weekend to put it through its paces. It was so cool to have it work with no hassles right out of the box! I'll want to change a few button functions, maybe, but I won't know for sure until I've worked with it a bit.

Mine didn't come with a mic stand adapter, but it's already worth the extra few dollars to me to be able to put it exactly where I want it, tilt it, etc.

    Thanks-

    Hi Less-
DO U KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT YAMAHA USB MIDI DRIVERS AND SONAR 6 PE?

I know they worked fine for me on my laptop with SPE6 just a few weeks ago (I've since gotten a new DAW and I'm using a standard MIDI connection thus far).

If I were you, I'd check the motifator.com forums, maybe post your issue there, but you could also try re-installing the Yamaha USB driver. I can vouch for the fact that it works in S6 (at least for the Motif 6 Classic).

    Good luck-

What a difference such a small thing makes! I have a desktop mic stand and a floor mic stand. I currently have the Tranzport attached to the desktop mic stand via the adapter, and because of the weight I can access all button combinations with one hand. Very nice!

Forgive the dumb question, but can I re-program the "Normal" buttons? I see how to change the Shift-key and Stop-key combinations in SONAR, but if I want to swap, say the "Normal" In/Out buttons to Loop In/Out from Punch In/Out, how would I go about that?

RTFM, I know, but which? So many manuals, so little time...!

    TIA-

I've had mixed results in the past with various gadgets attached to mic stands. They are often unstable. But I was impressed with the adapter for the Tranzport, it's very solid. And it's held in place magnetically, so it's very easy to detach if you need to use it somewhere else. The little boom was, I think, about $15 from Sweetwater.
