Re:Do the musicians at Cakewalk prefer Finale or Sibelus? 2011/05/30 11:29:04 (permalink)

Hey Vintagevibe-
I certainly didn't miss any point.  I would like to compose in Sonar as well, and I DO want Sonar staff view to be easier to work with.  Currently I compose in Sibelius and import the midi files for editing in Sonar, when things have to be changed I close Sonar and open Sibelius again to rework.  I would like to skip this step and re-work some notation in Sonar, but as stated earlier, the staff view is far too painful to work with after getting used to Sibelius.

I see why people want staff view improved and I want that to.  I gave up hope in Cakewalk on that front and moved on.  Yes, swapping between Sibelius and Sonar can be a downer in the workflow.  Having only used Sonar for a few years myself, I look to the older Sonar users and see that they have been asking for Staff View improvements for many versions.  The picture was painted for me on how Cakewalk views Staff View and so I moved on.

I believe we are on the same side as to what we want in Staff View and why we want it, I just don't see Cakewalk spending much time or resources to improve it given the history.

Agree 100%.  I keep going back and forth between having hope and giving up.  I wish Cakewalk would just say they're never going to do it instead of stringing us along for over 15 years.

I've recently gotten the full version of Notion 3 having had an SLE version which was limited in being tied to IK Multimedia's Miroslav Philharmonic.

I've also been working with PT9 HD (What a learning curve) and the Score editor is light years ahead of SONAR's.

On the other hand Presonus Studio One doesn't have a notation editor at all.

I use both Finale Allegro and Sibelius 6. Initially, I found Finale easier to use ... but these days I use Sibelius most often. I do a lot of ProTools on Mac, and Sibelius is cross-platform. Re-wire is another benefit - tho have not tried it with Cakewalk. As others have said, the built-in score editor in PT9 is pretty awesome as well - especially printing.

I'm not a composer - but I do a fair amount of arranging/scoring. If I did it for a living, I'd have to choose Sibelius + PT9 as the best solution. The two work together seamlessly. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive solution - over $1100 for the pair - but you do get what you pay for. Exchange data in both directions. Scan music with Sibelius and pull into PT as midi tracks. Record midi in PT and rewire into Sibelius. Print perfect parts every time - including cues, grace notes, etc. Powerful stuff that just works.
