:) !!!

One of those times when you're actually happy to be awaken by the doorbell (though you question the fact that Mr. FedEx guy leaves such a precious package in plain sight; usually, they at least push it behind the porch arch where it can't be seen from the street).

Anyway, meet Mila. :)

She's even better than I expected - that neck is awesomely fat, the finish is better than I expected (hard to tell from the poor quality pics here) and she's eminently playable out-of-the-box, thanks in part to Sweetwater's 55 points evaluation I guess.

AWESOME! I love that guitar! The finish OMG! CONGRATS!

My wish list is one of these for Christmas since I can't afford a Gibson

P.S. note the engine near the Ice Chest. It's portable!

FWIW, this is the least expensive Gibson you'll find - with the recent price drop, $499. IMHO, way better than any other budget/similarly priced guitars I've tried. I had to get one while the supplies lasted.

You can be there where you sign for it also, or else it is not delivered in 3 attempts and then if not being there when you had to sign for whatever you get you could go to the FedEx place and pick up your package. It needs to be left nowhere except in your hands. I know signing when the FedEx (or UPS) person shows up can be a hassle but you immediately have it then to carry in place in your hands.

Might want to put some lemon oil on it, and please take some better lighted pictures.

Yeah, I was surprised that no signature was required. Last time I'd ordered from Sweetwater (my Pod HD), signature was mandatory.

As for pics, I'm afraid my old iPhone 3G wouldn't really give me anything significantly better than that.

But here are the Sweetwater pics of the actual guitar I've picked.

Re: :) !!! 2013/11/15 17:55:35 (permalink)
That's just a bad ass looking SG. I've never owned or played one, but years ago there was a music store here in town. I walked in one day, and he had a white SG with gold hardware, hanging on the wall. And, it was left handed. It was one of those moments where you just stop, and a beam of light opens up from the sky and shines on the guitar, while angels sing and harps play. I was broke as hell back then, with 2 kids under 3 years old. I don't remember the price, but I knew I couldn't have bought it if it was $100. It hung there for over a year, then the old man who owned the store died, and the vendors came and cleaned the place out. Everytime I see an SG I think about that guitar.

Nice "get" there Rain. Enjoy!!!

May I propose a simple solution to this problem.

A solution that involves my camera and your guitar?

Just package that beaut back up and send her across the pond to me.

I'll take some nice glossy snaps and pop it straight back to you.

Pffft, typical Brit lack of ambition !

What he needs is to have you and your camera shipped out to Vegas for a year so that you can take the shots in the climate it's accustomed to.

You mean young Ginger Hewitt ? ( as his mates call him )

I forgot about him. But no, it's a different contact and you certainly won't be sharing a room with me Mr Trumpy,

so no, no billiards involved, other than your usual game of pocket billiards ;)

I didn't realise that Rain was paying, that's even better. Bellagio then methinks. Talk to your mate Randy - he seems to be the right guy to set up the after show entertainment.

Re: :) !!! 2013/11/18 18:59:08 (permalink)
First, I'd have to be able to put it down, wouldn't I?

I'd been wanting a SG for a while because it has lots of things that I dig in a Les Paul - tune-o-matic bridge, set neck, humbuckers, but, unlike the Les Paul, it has the switch moved out of the way, which is great. Not unlike the strat, it also has the contoured body, which is obviously more comfortable, and much better access to higher frets.

Another option was to have the strat upgraded w/ a humbucker, but ergonomically speaking, I'd still be stuck with the flat tremolo bridge and that darn volume knob in the way.

The problem was that every SG I'd tried did not work for me, because they felt so thin and frail (I'm a big guy with huge hands) - with the exception of one I'd played a few months back which made me realize that a thicker neck made all the difference.

So this one is pretty much like all those things that I wanted wrapped into the same guitar. I love that neck and the satin finish is actually preferable to the standard glossy one - it just feels faster. Such easy upper neck access is insane - all 24 frets! The black covers on the pick ups means one less thing to worry about, and it all adds up to the understated elegance of this amazing guitar.

And it has the Gibson logo on the headstock to top it all. :P

My take on it - if you think you may have the slightest interest, go try one for yourself before they take them off the market.

Did I mention it looked amazing? (Those vintage looking tuners are a nice touch - look great and work nicely) Mine is already starting to show a bit of glossy wear where my arm and hand touch the wood - imho, it makes her look even more gorgeous.

LOL - nothing pisses me off more than the position of that knob on my old geetar

My chubby little paws were forever accidentally moving it around (and occasionally the Tone knob/s too).

The only solution I've found that works for me is to take all the plastic dials off completely, now it's almost impossible to move them by accident:

When Mike built my beautiful Ruby for me, and although she's based on a Strat body shape, I asked him specifically if was possible to position the volume knob well away from the bridge. And being the craftsman and gentlemen that he is, he obliged

As for recording it, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. There was an issue w/ my Focusrite interface's preamps so I had to ship it back last week for them to fix.

I was that I hadn't sold my old M-Audio and thought there wouldn't be any down time - it worked just fine 2 or 3 weeks ago when I tested it. But what I didn't take into account was my recent upgrade to the most recent version of my OS. Apparently, it is not yet supported... :/ So I have to wait for Focusrite to send back my Scarlett.

I had a Focusrite Twin Trak Pro preamp but had to get rid of it because it would get so hot I was afraid it would catch on fire...  I had a friend with issues on his preamp too.  I don't know what was wrong with yours, but I'm a bit surprised of all the issues I've heard about their (supposedly really good) gear.

There's a certain range in which the preamp actually generated noise - and that range was actually pretty much exactly the sweet spot where you want your level to be when you record.

It almost sounded like you were trying to tune in to a radio station or something. Even on its own with nothing plugged in, you could find a range where it was noisy - I recorded the actual noise but Tech Support didn't need it to understand that the unit needed to be fixed.

Not to derail the thread but wanted to mention (besides thank you Steve) that
after using a handful of those bridges that I found one that had a rattle/buzz and it
was stopped by rolling the wheel (saddle) just a little. For whatever reason that wheel in a particular
position would rattle/buzz. Only one I've seen do it so far.
