128 gig SSD for $67 after rebate at Microcenter...

MicroCenter has OCZ 128 gig SSD's on sale for $84.99 and you get a $20 rebate from OCZ. I need to upgrade one of my ssd's as it was only a 64 gig drive and I need 77 gigs for the complete Ivory II program. I was only using two of the piano sets, but with theis larger ssd, I'll have all three piano's on the drive.

I think $65 bucks for a 128 Gig SSD is a great deal !! They used to be a lot more than that !!!

OCZ offers you a faster rebate if you'll accept $18.00. So for two dollars you don't have to wait 2 months. So I got the SSD for $67 after rebate. Still a great deal !!

Here's a link to it....

I read some of the reviews that were negative about this ssd, but mine is working perfectly, no problems at all.

I bought one of their 64GB ssd's and it worked great for a while, now it gives me BSOD randomly. Restarting works fine. I even did a fresh install of Win 7 but still at random get BSOD.

I have two 64 gig OCZ's that I've had for over a year and never had any problems with them. I don't put them to heavy use, but just for sound sample programs.

Well I put this new one to the test. I loaded up the full Ivory II program. 77 gigs of sound samples. Opened it up in Sonar and everything played perfectly first try, not one glitch the whole time I was playing. No latency problems at all. Just perfect.

I've learned not to believe in negative reviews because what's stopping the disgruntled competitor for posting ?? Nothing. Some people will talk bad about things to make their own product more appealing. My neighbors do this all the time about other neighbors.

My experience with OCZ SSD's has been perfect, no problems at all. That's why I didn't even think twice about buying it.

What took you so long Scott?!

Did you have a chance to review the OCZ Vertex 4? And not that you're asking, but my OCZ Vertex 3 is doing just fine after a full year of abuse.

LOL funny guy :-) ... nope i am staying away from OCZ..
look all manufacturers have issues from time to time things die just the way it is.
its how they deal with it..

after all this time OCZ hasnt figured out how to do customer service.
the high % of failure of their products (all not just ssd)..

now in all fairness to OCZ they had maasive failure of older sandforce, new is better? of course the drive he linked to is the older..

i am selling Sandforce drives again, as the newer are supposed to be better but Intel only..
i have advanced replace overnight with them thus happy clients should anything go wrong!
i have had only 1 intel SSD drive die thus far. and my personal 60G OCZ indelix drive is still working as well (someone has that old system of mine for an office boax around here...) but it needs help frequently (trim etc)

How do Crucial SSD's stack up? Thinking of buying their 512 GB.
As far as OCZ, haven't the Vertex 4 resolved all the reliability problems?

The reliability problems were related to their 2nd generation of SSDs. The 3rd generation was/is very reliable. The latest 4th generation shows specs. to die for with the "Indilink" dual-ARM controller architecture. Reviews are nothing but positive and the prices are... affordable, finally. The 256 GBs model that is (approx. $300 USD), but the 512 GB model is still expensive at around $675 USD.

Crucial 512GB SSD on sale for $345 @ Newegg. Mixed reviews though. Maybe the new firmware will fix things?

Well my OCZ is working fine. I thought for a while there that it died as my computer couldn't find it. Turned out it was a loose cable connection. I tightened it up and it's been working fine ever since.

FWIW, That particular OCZ SSD model doesn't benchmark very fast.
Literally about half the speed of the Vertex 3 and Vertex 4 units.

FWIW, I've benchmarked the Vertex 3 and 4 units.
    Not much difference...
Vertex 3 sustains ~512MB/Sec on reads

I'd say that the differences go a little deeper when talking about the Vertex 4.

IOPS @120,000 and the new Indilinx Infused Everest 2 platform backed by a..., 5 year warranty. And the price for the 256GB model (under $300.00 USD). Regardless of the brand I/you favor, it's starting to look real good for an SSD only system.

I installed an OCZ Vertex 4, 128GB on my new PC system.  I have the Windows OS and Sonar on the SSD.  Just about everything else is on a 1TB, 7200 RPM hard drive.

I've been up about 3 weeks with the new system.  Two weeks "burning in" and installing programs.  One week as my new operational system.  I did the first recording session with it last week.

Explain that last sentence to me like I'm your bank manager and you want me to loan you the money for a new machine.

I can't see where I can justify the current at least 10X price over conventional drives in the storage role. That's not even factoring in the annual cost of ownership increase due to that fact the SSD's ARE still less reliable than conventional drives. The best case scenario is on the OS I get that some are getting 70% increase in speed perfomance at boot time and 128Gb would actually cover me even for my current dual boot setup, ALL the apps I use and the paging file.

I can see the appeal there, but what would be the actual real-world benefits of 3Tb of SSD space to warrant the roughly $3600 using the figures you mention in order to do it?

So you say, "starting to look good for an SSD only system", to me it seems like there is still a long way to go unless:

A/ You have money to burn.

B/ You have need to win pointless wee wee contests against other users. (nothing wrong with that btw.)

C/ You have a specific application where the extra speed warrants the large additional $ per Gb. (which I don't currently)

Jeez, is this the best you can come up with? Really? It's interesting to read where your mind is at. I don't participate in "wee-wee" contests as I believe it brings the worst out of people (seriously). And at my age, "shrinkage" is a much bigger concern. But I'm up for a yellow snow calligraphy contest..., if you are? Heck, I'll even supply the snow.

Trust me I am.  My enquiry was genuine enough.

I can see the appeal there, but what would be the actual real-world benefits of 3Tb of SSD space to warrant the roughly $3600 using the figures you mention in order to do it?

The deal the OP is flagging up makes it appealing to me as far as an OS drive goes for the cost per Gb, I can't see beyond that.

I know my delivery style isn't usually the most popular as far as certain individuals go but I would imagine that many here interested in the subject, including myself, would appreciate your views.

I genuinely believe that one of the main reasons for going for an SSD only system, at this stage, to cover the storage requirements most of us need would likely be for the bragging rights and you'd still be paying a big premium for those.  If I'm mistaken I'd be glad to be put right.

Well here's an update.... A month later and the ssd is still working fine. My Ivory II samples load up very quickly and play with no problem. I already recieved my rebate and used it to beef up my food storage program.

My older ssd is still working fine too.

    I have no doubt.

I also take Scotts view that good customer turnaround is paramount in his situation. For the money though this drive is looking attractive to me just now.

Scott mentioned OCZ's customer service and reliability.

So far the Vertex 4 SSD is OK.

However, I also had an OCZ ZT 750 power supply, that is a fully modular and the reason I bought it.  The fan in the power supply would spin up and get noisy after a short period.  I opened a Tech Support ticket with OCZ this past Thursday and in less than 6 hours I had response that it was a known problem in one batch of power supplies and they issued an RMA to return it and replace with a newer model that the fan controller circuit works properly.  They even sent (e-mail) me a pre-paid UPS label to ship it back.  When I updated the ticket that it had been dropped off at UPS for return they didn't wait to get it back, they released the replacement unit.  I don't have the replacement yet as this all happened Thursday and Friday, and the replacement was shipped out Friday.    I had a new power supply, an Antec HG620 that I was going to use in a new PC I'm building for my daughter, I have it installed in my new system and will use the replacement OCZ in my daughter's new build.

On another subject in the trials and tribulations of building PC's, I used a Corsair H80 liquid cooler for the CPU.  It does its job and keeps the CPU temps generally in the low 30's (C) (and even dips into the upper 20's) but the OEM Corsair fans are noisy (too noisy for a recording studio).  According to other posts this is an issue.  I got some "Nexus real silent case fans" and replaced the OEM Corsair fans and took care of that issue.

I've been building PC's since the 286/386 days and its a lot easier now with parts that are more compatible.  Just the hassles with defective components such as the noisy fans I had to deal with.  The previous build I did a couple of years ago, the case (an NZXT) had a defective front panel assembly - the USB ports were flakey and NZXT sent a new front panel assembly.
