30 New CA-X Amp Sims Available as part of 30th Anniversary Celebration

The original CA-X guitar and bass amps, which were based on TH2 and had installation issues for some users, have been replaced and supplemented with 30 new Amp Sim FX Chains that are now part of the 2017.08 update. They are based on TH3 Cakewalk Edition and work in Artist, Professional, and Platinum. I'd be curious if those who have TH3 full installed run into any difficulties, but it should be okay - TH3 cleans up a lot of TH2's loose ends.

Hope ya like 'em! Click on the video below to hear what they sound like.

Must admit, I had quite a few issues with TH2. TH3 was a much quicker program and felt a lot more stable. I've been using it without issue since it was released. I installed it almost as soon as it was available hoping it would be a better program and was not disappointed. Will try the amp sims when I get a chance.

Good to hear! IIRC you had persistent problems with the original CA-x amp sims. Hopefully that's a thing of the past.

As I posted in my other thread, I assumed that these were presets within TH3 (Full Edition), they are not (at least for me)

I found them, but they're not in the actual TH3 plugin. (Where I would select "Insert Audio FX" from the FX Bin).
Instead they are listed under "Insert FX Chain Presets", which opens a Windows directory, and from their I can choose the 30th Anniversary CA-X Amps.

I'm running full version TH3 and having a problem with these new CA-X FX chains.  I dragged Clean TH3 to the effects bin of a guitar audio track.  Double clicked on it to open it.  If I double click on the TH3 element in the chain, I get popup:
Cakewalk Missing Plugin-In Stand-in
Plugin: TH3
This plugin is missing or improperly installed on your system.
(it gives some more cryptic info after that)

I have no known other problem with TH3 working and use it frequently.  I'm wondering if this may be because I only install TH3 vst2 dll and not vst3 dll.  The reason I do this is because there's a known problem with Program Changes working with the vst3 version that Overloud has been aware of for over a year.  I did a rescan of my plugins and tried other CA-X chains and got same result.

They sound excellent Craig. Thanks very much.

About a year ago, I had a minor issue, whereby the presence of TH3 in a project caused "crackling" when my mouse hovered over a Waves GUI, which has caused me to use S Gear exclusively. I must have another look at TH3.

Do these get downloaded and installed automatically with the Splat update Craig, or are they somewhere else as a separate download?
Thanks

S-Gear will remain your go to, trust me...it's not because of crackling though...for some reason guitar cab sims bundled in baked products always sound sub-par to me including the new set...totally "meh"...of course as usual your mileage may vary...I suppose it comes down to what kind of sounds you use and like...but none of the new ones appeal to me. YMMV

S-gear on the other hand...plenty to work with in it...best sim out there are far as I am concerned and Dave Pensado seems to agree...(Into the lair #169)

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Bear in mind that as the article accompanying the sims says, "Unlike sims that try to re-create the sounds of existing amps, the CA-X virtual amps created 'idealized' amp sounds that were based on the classics, but without the limitations placed by the physical world. They included extensive processing (in some cases, dozens of stages of EQ) to create new cabinet, speaker, and distortion types…sort of the amp equivalent of CGI graphics."

I made these FX Chains specifically because although I have S-Gear, AmpliTube, GTR, and Guitar Rig, there were sounds I wanted to obtain that none of them produce. TH3 doesn't either, which is why the FX Chains add a lot of sound shaping.

Which depending on how you use sims could be or not be optimal...I've listened to Dave Pensados mixes...so I kinda know what his sounds sound like in a mix...all these presets...not so much.

hmmm. after reading more about how these were made...I'm interested.
I don't have anything but the bundled TH3, and prefer S-Gear or Amplitube 4, but I will download these and give them a spin. Thanks Craig!

If you want to hear them in context, all the guitar tracks on my Neo- and Simplicity albums use only the CA-X amps (except for the opening guitar riff in "On Mars," which is AmpliTube 3). There's a greater variety of them on the Neo- album. I also used the "Classic" amp for the blues harmonica tracks in Simplicity...it gives them that vintage, Chicago blues feel.

With the CA-X amps, the "elective" processing like reverb, tremolo, vibrato, animation etc. are under user control. Most of the "under-the-hood" processing is to remove amp fizz with notch filters, add de-essing to reduce highs going in, and other "transparent" processes. The object is more to optimize the sound that already exists, not do something like add EQ to fit in with a specific vocalist or whatever. That's up to whoever is doing the engineering.

Craig, great stuff. Do you use any preamps with your guitar and bass? I am never sure I am putting the best signal into Sonar.

I was at another studio and plugged my Strat into a Warm Audio Tone Beast and the guitar was warm, strong, without any clipping. Maybe my mind just thinks something I don't own sounds better than anything I own.

I just plug electric and acoustic guitars into a TASCAM US-20x20 DI input. My goal is to get as plain vanilla as possible into the computer, and then do all the processing in the box. I've used "designer" preamps and they're fine, but I don't find them essential.

For bass, I've sampled my basses (the Gibson Bass expansion pack for Rapture) so I play most bass parts via keyboard.

Craig Anderton - It's a great collection, and I thank you for your time and effort in putting these together.  I know I'll find myself using them now much more frequently than just TH3 (or Amplitube or Guitar Rig) alone.
Any recommendations (among your presets) for that "Santana, long sustained sound"?
I've heard during live performances of Europa, he can hold a sustained note for a full minute.  Probably one of the longest held sustained notes you'll ever hear.  (But I'm not necessarily looking for something that can sustain a note for THAT long)

Note: I'm a keyboard player, not a guitarist, and most the lead, electric, and acoustic guitars I use are virtual (Real Guitars: RealLPC, RealStrat, RealRick, etc) along with several other virtual guitar plugins, like AmpleSound, Indiginus, Orange Tree.....

Get into your Cakewalk account, into your products and download CA - X Amps 30th Anniversary Celebration. That pack will go into FX chain presets under CA - X Amps 30th Anniversary Celebration.

I hope it's OK to post this content here in this thread  ....

A little while back I had ran a little experiment .
I took the Showcase CA -Amp Template from the older version before this new update and started a little song project ..
(my screen shot shows what amps I used )
At the time I was interested in trying out all the amp sims Craig had came up with .
I wound up playing my guitars out of most of the amps ...I think I missed 3 or 4 total ...

Anyway today I redeemed the new CA-X Amp sims . I figured the new content would update and replace the older content which it did ...
I had some time today to revisit my old project and use the new amp sims
Basically what I have here is my SONAR test project with many of the updated AMP Sims replacing the older amp sims ...
The project itself is very loose and primitive ...
I used all the dry sounds of the amps with out extra verbs or any of my typical sends or effects ...

A screen shot of the project .

I wound up bouncing everything to stems ...screen shot

Then I took this bounce / export and ran it through the SONAR Just a little louder template ...(no screen shot )

Be forewarned the tune itself is very primitive w lots flaws ...
I happen to like the way the guitars sound .... the guitars are Gibson Les Paul, An SG , a 7 string , a Strat and a Tele ...

The Genre of my clip is along the lines of Loud Hard Rock ...
https://soundcloud.com/guitarist-kenny-wilson/ca-x-amp-sims-hard-rock-guitar

I'm putting myself out on a limb . Anyway I hope someone enjoys the tones .

all the best,

Kenny

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .
The internet is nothing more than a glorified real time cartoon we all star in.
I play a "Gibson " R 8 Les Paul Cherry Sunburst .

G'day,
Will these work with out actually running Sonar 2017.08 core update, i.e., just downloading/installing amps in CCC.

Oh man - this is exactly why I did these sims!!!! I wanted people to be able to just drag them in and wail. Wow, how very, very gratifying. I'm glad you're finding them rock-friendly, quite a few of them are.

You might also want to check out some of the clean ones. The Classic is kind of "twinnish," Sparkle and Clean make sounds I could never get out of "real" amps. I use these a lot with rhythm guitar parts.

Thank you so much for sharing the sounds you got. Really makes me feel like I can check off one of the goals of the CA-X amps, which is for other people to enjoy them. THANK YOU!!!

Any recommendations (among your presets) for that "Santana, long sustained sound"?

That would be sweet, and save a lot of signal processing time. Aside from having a loud Mesa Boogie amp, and being master of feedback control, and/or perhaps some kinda of looping sustain pedal, LOL, if your talking about processing recorded notes, I sometimes drag out a note in Melodyne to try and get longer sustain sound, not for a minute though, it gets a bit too distorted near end if too long (using a real guitar amp signal), I have also done multiple cut and pastes of notes in Melodyne, or even just in track, being careful to blend levels well at cross over points. But Id think if simulated in a VI anyway, you could just drag a note as long as you wanted? Or try real guitar sound with reasonable sustain, and continue note sustain with VI sound, Ive done this to simulate long feedback as well.

Otherwise Id like to ask, amongst the presets, is there one that best simulate's Boston's (Tom Scholz's) guitar sound?

Cheers

Hi Craig ,
Oh man , your new amps Sound Fantastic  .
Yes, I Love being able to see whats under the hood also . For me it is very educational to be able to see the individual components and effects w the settings you used to create each amp sim .
I'm looking forward to playing out of The Classic and a number of the amps I haven't tried yet .

Regarding the tones I used on my clip ,
I found your amp sims to very responsive in a few very important areas .
I felt the sound was there for sure .The amps I used have Very warm sounds with lot's of Raw Power &  Ball's .
Also ,while playing through your amp sims , I was able to feel the very elusive quality that even some of the top amp sims seem to lack . Your amp sims have that all important "Feel Factor " I need to feel when I'm playing ...

Thank You for Creating these highly custom amp sims and offering them to The SONAR Community

I'm certainly gonna use them for sure .

all the best,

Kenny
