Here's my favourite post on forum culture currently.

It's actually much sadder than the picture Craigs mild humour has managed to convey.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/why-all-that-whinging-online-is-counterproductive/0109111?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+mcvuk%2Fstream+%28MCV%3A+Home+Stream%29

The subsequent posting here has kind of confirmed it yet again.

Forums everywhere are eating themselves alive.

So score points y'all over what you think my intent has been here.  Unlike the invitation I offered Craig for a response, you guys don't even bother with such niceties, well I just dangled my foot in the pirhana pool so just make up your minds to suit your good selves and feast away.

You watch though the world will still be spinnin' tomorrow just the way it did today.

That's about how important how all this dramatic stuff that happens here is.  Someone just called ME deluded...lol.
Bless your heart, you answered my question, anyway.  Thank you for your swift response.

I agree with you that the world will still be spinning tomorrow, even after Craig's post, too.  I find your reaction to Craig's post a little oversensitive.

There does seem to be a certain paranoia and martyr syndrome prevalent in the forum at the moment.  I am sure it will pass.

I felt Craig's list had a ring of truth to it.  I will certainly be sharing it with students and colleagues, regardless of what DAW they use.  They will either find it funny, or not.  I suspect they won't take it personally, though.

Did I?

Where did that bit happen again?

You guys seem to be better experts than me on what I write so show me.

btw Craigs list has more than a ring of truth about it, it was just thought it was a bit limp not that it wasn't accurate.  I did say that was IMO though.  Given that it was posted 'in the light of the spate of recent threads'  I still think it was untimely and hugely insulting to those that have been trying to point out issues within that recent spate being referred to in the OP.

Again like the other one it's a thread that would have been better off in the appropiate forum and we could all have a chuckle (or not).  Guaranteed anyone else who'd posted that here and it would have been flushed down the U bend into the CH by now.

I'm also confident that if Craig has issue with anything that I've put there as being unfair he's more than capable of putting me straight without the need for all the ladies-in-waiting intervening on his behalf.

And why John has bothered to quote my post there is beyond me, perhaps he's judging people by his own standards because he knows full well that I don't come back and edit my posts after the event, even when some folk would prefer that I did at times.

Can we get back to making fun of ourselves for a bit?? That was enlightening for most of us.

You have done nothing but try to rationilze your OP. Believe it or not the words you use in a sentence have a specific meaning and tend to define themselves by the content of the sentence in which they are used.

You said - what you said - the way you said it. Period. Done. It was rude and uncalled for.

You cannot make a joke of it and all of a sudden it means something else. Well, actually you and BW can I guess. Big joke.

Well, honestly, what did he expect starting a thread like that with the atmosphere here lately? What Craig did was no better than what some of you are claiming Jonbouy did. It was akin to dumping gas on a house fire that was almost out.

There's a large group of people having serious problems with this software that are beyond the normal 'oh this is an annoying glitch, I'll work around that' realm. Venture down to the Coffee House ... there's a very telling thread there right now. I was actually shocked to see some of the long time members here who are still on 8.5 because of the problems. And it just goes to show that, while some people stay silent and don't get as passionate as others, there is still an entire group of people out there are seeing this that we've never heard from.

I think some folks are getting tired of the constant denial of their legitimate problems when they come to this forum and are tired of getting laughed at, and it's probably going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

I sure hope that the next patch heals a lot of wounds and focuses on more compatibility for everyone, not just a select few systems.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that Sonar was coming out for Mac.

I wonder if it will be up to Mac's legendary stability level?

So your fun chart there might have been posted as light relief but I consider it to be hugely insulting to many of those here that are clearly having serious issues and yet are having trouble being heard among such things as the glibness you've just posted, not as harmful as some of the personal stuff that gets thrown at people because they dare mention can't get the software to do enough of what it is supposed to do I grant you but unhelpful just the same.

Oh, and someone really had to point out to you that an article that you'd written had actually been posted online?

Unbelievable.

Not only that the humour is pretty lame IMO, you want a good belly laugh I'd suggest spending half an hour in the Coffee House.  It might be at your own expense mind you but if you ain't too prissy about that kind of thing I guarantee you'll have yourself a few laughs among some really gifted comedians...

That was written long before the Great Cakewalk Customer Blow-Up. Instead of assuming it was directed as mockery of Cakewalk users having issues, which is wasn't, you can assume it was all about poking fun at internet forums and people who are disconnected from reality, which it was. If you didn't catch the reductio ad absurdum of the various examples, I'll try to make it more obvious next time. One person summarized Craig's List perfectly: "The whole point of Craig's List is to create something that's funny yet snarky, just to be a smart-ass." Bingo!

Craig's List has made fun of magazine reviewers, toxic Christmas music, marketing cliches, recording sessions, totally pointless internet forum arguments, politicians and how they relate to music, over the top self-promotion, and more. Sometimes it's snarky, sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's light. The next CL restores Balance in the Force by making fun of software manufacturers - I translate five examples of marketing-speak into English. (Of course, each manufacturer thinks I'm talking about them, just as you projected what I said to be directed to the people on this forum having problems.)

For the record: I don't make fun of people who have problems; I make fun of people who are disconnected from reality. My posts have made it extremely clear that I have nothing but sympathy for all those having problems with their hardware or software, regardless of manufacturer, because I've been there many times before. And given how much stuff I review, probably more times than any of them. I know how much it sucks.

But, I apologize for trying to add some levity into this currently negative ecosystem, and promise to be more serious in the future. Watch for my next blockbuster thread, "The correlation between Monsanto's terminator seed and the suicide of farmers in India." Which is actually vastly more important than the quality or lack thereof of staff view in Sonar...but I digress.

As to not knowing when something's published online, it's not even remotely unbelievable (although that kind of comment, as well as some others from you, do provide useful insights into the lens through which you see the world). After I write something, especially if it was months ago, it's done. Over. Down the memory hole. I don't think about it again unless other people bring it up. I was just at a NAMM show, and lots of people stopped me to say how much they enjoyed Craig's List, with the most common comment being "It's the first thing I read in the mag." So when I was told the one about forum DAW silliness was online, I thought y'all might find the humor in it. Apparently most people did.

Now, about Monsanto.

LOL Just in time.

I really try to avoid the negative threads, but ya know sometimes ya accidentally get caught in one.  (It is possible to get snagged when Trolling is going on )

Dang Trebble Hooks

I did like and completely agree with the article and appreciate Craigs timely posting of it.

Im one of the believers that every computer/system is different and has to be tweaked to each individual DAW software to get to the point that it will operate for the user to a level that is reliable.  I havent seen many that have gotten away with just loading Sonar, ProTools, Cubase, what ever and not had to make some sort of adjustments.

Its just how it is unless you have the exact system and settings they designed and tested the software on.

Again, thanks for the laugh Craig, I got a kick out of it and thought the intent was in "Good Taste"

Well, honestly, what did he expect starting a thread like that with the atmosphere here lately?

I was expecting people who spend a lot of time on internet forums to relate to poking fun at the people who really believe the kind of absurdist statements expressed in that column. It never occurred to me that anyone here actually believes the kind of over-the-top statements I wrote, and would therefore think I was talking about those people.

For the record, that column was inspired by visits in the Steinberg and RME forums. I've always felt this forum was far more about users helping other users...most of the time.

I never trivialize people who are having genuine problems that are based in reality. My main mode of operation in this forum is to look for someone asking a question which has 0 responses, open it, and see if I can help. BECAUSE I take people's problems seriously, I've been able to help a lot of users solve their problems and enjoy their tools, not just on this forum by any means but on several forums.

However, just as I have a lot of time for helping people with legit problems, I have very little patience for those who really think that the grass is always greener on the other side. It isn't. Most of the time it's just a different shade of green.

I am finding it hard to say what I am thinking because I am thing way too many things.

The best way for me to sum it up simply is that I have learned a great many things from Mr. Anderton through years. What he has given me is far and away greater than what I am able to pay back. He has done it freely. He has been on this forum supporting the membership with both good humor and great advice. Nothing that has been posted by him lately is nothing but a celebration of this forum and its membership.

We are extremely lucky to have him on this forum.

One last point is he has been a very nice guy to all of us. Even now after this ridiculous mess  brought on by others, he is taking it with grace.

Nothing that has been posted by him lately is nothing but a celebration of this forum and its membership.

definitely celebrate this membership, I even like the people who disagree with me for two reasons: 1) I'm not always right and if I'm not, I want to know about it; and 2) Monty Python's argument clinic is classic, and sometimes it's fun to play. It's not like I take this all that seriously (the Craig's List should have been a clue). And so many people here are just plain smart, cool, and helpful. I've learned a lot by coming to this forum, and several weirdass Sonar problems I had were fixed within minutes by communing with the search box and taking advantage of someone else's expertise.

Once there was a thread in the Ableton forums where the OP savaged me for being way too straight, old, and normal to have any business doing DJing on stage, with a link to me performing. I just sat back and watched the thread, and truly found out the meaning of "I don't care what you say, just spell my name right." Several people who'd never heard of me followed the link and liked what they saw, so by bringing attention to me, more people checked out my music, books, and various other projects. It's a really fun variant on the law of unintended consequences.

The funniest part, though, was how it ended. After the debate about whether I was cool or not, one person said "You know why he's cooler than you? Because he doesn't give a f*ck what you think." Thus ended the thread.

That wasn't quite true; I do want to give people what they want. For example if someone's going to spend $30 on an Advanced Workshop video, then by golly, I want them to learn something and feel they got value received. But if they don't like my age or my clothes...then guilty as charged, I don't give a f*ck what they think

I always appreciate kind words, but no one needs to worry about my feelings. I feel very welcome here, realize that the various Eeyores are simply wired that way, and come here to engage in dialog. Well, and to get ideas about which subjects to cover for my Sonar column in Sound on Sound - this is the Focus Group of the Gods for that application.

1.  My DAW has bugs in it?  I read these comments and think... maybe I got the "golden" copy, created by the Bakers especially for me.  Maybe I'm just not holding my mouth right..... ?

2. Naaaah...   the bakers's laughing at us?

3. Yeah... well this one's kinda hard to refute....   but they do have mortgages to pay and country club memberships to maintain.....

4. What's a feature?  My DAW does exactly what I need it to do and does it well..... and as far as all the other stuff..... maybe I don't even need that stuff.....

5. I've created lots of hit songs with my DAW.... the problem is that Nashville simply has not yet recognized that fact.

note: there may be some sarcasm and exaggeration in the above listed commentary.

What you fail to realise is that I complete concur with this post.
I understood the intended levity, even if I didn't think the humour was edgy enough, just a bit too twee for my taste.

I also understand John that if anyone but Craig had posted that thread here you'd have reported it to a moderator as being drivel and buffoonery, and cried out for it to be moved to the Coffee House as you have done with similar threads in the past.

Such obvious sycophancy is distasteful.

Whatever the justifications for posting it, regardless of my normally positive view about Craig's input, it's in the inappropiate place given the folk come here for peer to peer support which is what I believe makes it hugely insulting for those that ARE clearly having serious issue with the software just now.

I could post a whole bunch of these gags about the current state of forums that currently abound on the internet most of them I've found much funnier and even more snarky than this one.

Like Craig says and you'll know I mean it I have no trouble posting anywhere for worrying about what people might think or whether they agree with me or not, I posted my views and I don't see anything I've said any differently today.

I was not rude to anyone although I am certainly opinionated here.

I'll leave it to you guys to do the judgings and executions that's the part that I'm not interested in but it's what appears to be what you guys seem to be getting off on here daily.

Thanks Craig for the reminder of how cool you really are but honestly you ARE preaching to the converted here.  I certainly always enjoy your input and have learned much from your presence in the industry over many years.  And I really don't give a f**k what they think.

btw did you read the link to the article I posted?

Sadly I think the logical conclusion of where the disdain for forums is heading is fastly approaching the point of no more forums.

It is a shame because for me they've always been about the community but increasingly they aren't that anymore (and I'm not merely talking about this one), gone are the days of discussion, sharing, lasting and real friendships and interaction between staff and customers.  This forum has been over the years by far the most meaningful and rewarding, sadly it barely resembles what it used to be today.

The pattern seems to be that forums are fast approaching the point universally of solely becoming dog fests.  They are increasingly looking bad business for vendors who can now get customer feedback by the myriad of means out there these days without needing to maintain a forum presence along with the bi-polar extremism that is increasingly becoming the norm in most of them.

It seems you have to be for or against something these days, all the tonal variation in between seems to have gone.

I have reported 1 post while I have been on this forum. (notice my join date) I do not as a rule allow anyone to fight my battles for me. I'm quite able to engage anyone myself. The post I reported was an advertisement. I just happened to see it first.
As to it being inappropriate, that is up to CW not you or me. You have every right to voice your displeasure and I have every right to counter if I choose.

Mr. Anderton is a professional writer with a huge resume of useful and important publications. I for one want him to post here what ever it may be.

I think you were rude. I think your post was unneeded and unnecessary. I wouldn't have made a comment about if I didn't think that.

Re:5 Totally Delusional Reasons for Switching DAWs (warning: contains snarky humor content 2013/02/08 12:28:09 (permalink)
I'll reply to the original link.. think I can be objective as I use 3 things ?!?! :)

1) depends on the severity of the bugs.. and how quickly they are resolved.. AND if the company in question is trying to "milk" it for an upgrade to a new version.. e.g. 64 bit update

2) Some companies DAW / VST sometimes *DO* have an unprofessional attitude, not the fact they do.. more the fact it gets to be known, by the person or for customers generally. I used to work in the trade many moons ago, so saw that side of it. it's like any other job. Some people DO make you think ARE YOU FOR REAL ?!?! or others make you job nice.. but there is a difference when it's known to end users etc.

3) Some DAW's have done a nice job at extracting money over the years.. case in point.. cubase used to support DSP factory.. but waited till 4.5 *AFTER* I had paid for v4 to drop it.. after they had got my update cost. lets not start on 64 bit or other things e.g. "exclusive" offers that aren't so exclusive. Marketing dept's are tricky at the best of times.  I've dumped NI after their poor customer care and how they like doing over end users with very short discontinue times.

4)I do think as time has gone on.. DAW's are more alike in certain aspects and their functions..  e.g. Live's way of dealing with sequencing.. anyone else "borrowed" that ?

5) this is down to VIP or endorsing customers.. who aren't paying for whatever they are using a lot of the time.. It's 2 channels of audio end of the day.. I do love how a certain brand of DAW is "industry standard" .. much like there was only a choice of 2-3 decent ones really on the atari ST :)

I use 3 different things.. and I find out I work slightly different in each thing.. I think it's more the norm a lot will use 2+ DAWS for certain styles of music or just like the work flow of one and the mixing of other things

certain DAW's make certain styles of music easier.. as do plugins.

I agree John. It was a drama post that was polar opposite of intent of the op imo.

Thanks Craig for the reminder of how cool you really are but honestly you ARE preaching to the converted here.  I certainly always enjoy your input and have learned much from your presence in the industry over many years.  And I really don't give a f**k what they think.

btw did you read the link to the article I posted?

Actually the point was that I'm not cool, but as someone pointed out, not caring about being cool can make one cool. I guess the self-deprecation may have been a little too nuanced. Not only am I not cool, but for the record, I am not hip. Therefore, recognizing my lack of coolness makes me cool. However, it's uncool to say I'm cool because I don't care about being cool, but then, because I don't care that people think I'm uncool because I point out that people say I'm cool because I don't care if people think I'm cool returns me to coolness. Get the absurdity of those kind of judgements?

Just spell my name right  I think most people understand by now that when they read my stuff, they should picture someone who's not exactly Mr. Serious. Unless I'm offering tech tips.

BTW I read the link, which I would file under "magnificent grasp of the obvious." A forum is a mirror held up to society. Look at society. The people in Washington who supposedly guide the future of this country wisely are a bunch of immature, corrupt, spoiled brats. I think the quality of discourse in this forum far exceeds that of the discourse in Congress, but admittedly, Congress has set a very low bar.

I've been doing the forum thing for 18 years, since SSS first appeared as a microsite on AOL. I'm working on a model that will replace the traditional forum with what I think is a better alternative, but we'll leave it at that. It won't happen until six months at the very least, more likely a year.

Where did this come from?

And why is it in the Coffee House?

Keeping with the tortured biblical scriptures, they sure know how to turn Cake into whine upstairs, don't they?

I just knew that you must have a repository of material that you draw on for your 'Craigs List' featurettes.  (Craigs List...lol, I geddit!)

Bapu is still number one for unfunny though in my book.

Ya.  Of course, you've inspired me to believe that I should also get royalties if they don't use my name too.

Always good to cover all the bases.

I wish I could claim that I originated that famous 'Cake = Bakers' line.

That one always cracks me up.

Cake = Bakers...lol.

Do you see how it works?  Bakers make cakes thusly Cake = Bakers.

Hey, I wonder what they have cooking in the oven just now. LMAO.

See?  There so much scope with that one I could have retired by now if I'd have thought that little gem up.
