Beagle I do wish it had some new libraries with it. Which begs the question: why can't I just freakin' buy the engine upgrade itself? It's all of a 100MB download FFS. I guess on the bright side the K5 library is compressed, so you don't have to resave anything… The other thing is that K5 comes with a free copy of Retro Machine MkII… some cool classic synth sounds in there, if you're into that sorta thing, which I am… :) It's not going to replace any of my fine VAs, but I'm sure there are some good tweakable presets in there for some synths that I wouldn't necessarily want to own an entire version of... I think I'll pull the trigger on the U/G myself… just wish I could download what I need and be done with it, though…

On the topic of Kontakt Player licensing, it's not necessarily that the licensing costs are too great, it's just that it's not feasible to license the Player for smaller libraries. That's why a majority of Kontakt Player libraries are collections of instruments and cost over $200. And this is why Greg's excellent EEG is $179 (which I bought on sale for $149) while the comparable Vir2 Electri6ity is $400: Greg's not cutting NI in on the action. We will never know if NI's licensing fees are exorbitant, because licensees are contractually forbidden from disclosing any details. I did read somewhere that the fees are based on projected sales and must be paid up front, so a developer takes a financial gamble by licensing his product for the player. NI, like a bank, gets paid first whether the product is a hit or not.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

To be fair... Electri6ity is 8 different guitars... but I still think $-for-$ EEG is the winner, thanks to Greg's superior technology and customer relations skills... (not that I've ever had a problem with Vir2)...

Jonbouy A good lightweight alternative to EXS-24 on windows is this one. http://www.image-line.com.ocuments/directwave.html I like you use the KPlayer for the compatiblle libraries and use the NN-XT in Reason for patches I want to set up myself which is pretty much functionally equivalent to the Image Line one. i.e. simple and flexible with the formats it uses. This is spam and is in violation of forum rules.

You mean according to the TOS the only software we are supposed to talk about either positively or negatively in the "Software" forum is Cake software?? Correct me if I'm wrong but don't those products already have their own forums?? This is a peer to peer arrangement here and I don't think Cake has any real problem at all with folks FYIing other folks to vst effects and instruments they really like or dislike or are on a limited time sale. I think what they mean is that reccomending other DAW software on the forums is frowned upon. And, for the most part, folks adhere to that.

We can come here and talk all day long about how this or that software is the best, or the worst, or is on sale, or is whatever… The TOS issue that was raised is about paid representatives of companies openly advertising their products in an unsolicited manner. Like, if a company rep made a comment like "hey for this type of compressor check out our XYZ product", or "our next version of XYZ is going to support that", or "we're having a sale on XYZ currently" in the context of a thread, then I don't see that as advertising, per se. Maybe a very biased opinion, but not explicit advertising. But there's no doubt about starting a thread that basically amounts to an overt product announcement. While I don't see adverts as a general problem on this forum, I do agree with JB in principle… if the TOS is so blatantly violated, where does it end? Why have a TOS to begin with?

My point is that my statement is as ridiculous as Jonbouy freaking out over IK Obi to the point of being insulting and rude to him. The statement he quoted: "Cakewalk does not allow any form of advertising, therefore promoting websites or products in the forum is inappropriate." .. said nothing about representatives of companies and if it were taken literally we couldn't talk up other products or link to them - which, of course, would be ridiculous. When I read his post I see actual and egregious disregard for the TOS. It was uncalled for and unbecoming of this forum. That's my only point. YMMV

There was some history there... which was being regurgitated and reiterated. So it got a little overblown. But there's still value in the fundamental point: internet forums hosted by companies should not be dumping ground for unsolicited advertising. Much different than Joe Blow cakewalk customer asking for or providing opinions on other vendors' products... many times the DAW That Shall Not Be Named But That Begins With The Letter "R" and others are mentioned routinely on the main forum. And I think that's a good thing to have an openness to the discussion, keep your head out of the sand, don't be paranoid into obselescence, that sorta thing. Whereas if a salesperson went over there and posted a new thread stating "Cubase 6 on sale this month!", then that's obivously a whole other abusive kettle of fish...

1. Jonbouy rocks, he is a great contributor to this forum. 2. As near as I can tell (ANAICT) the TOS are implemented as well as various USG Federal regulations. As Frank Zappa once said: "We are a nation of laws. Poorly writen and randomly enforced"...or word to the effect. Regards

I've seen conflicting information on the web (imagine THAT!), so I'll ask here. Does NI regularly have an upgrade path from Kontakt to Komplete. When I say "regularly" I mean that such a path is available at least once a year even if only on special offers. If I eventually would like to own Komplete and there's no regular upgrade path it makes little sense to invest in Kontakt even with a half-price sale.

Typically, when the new version of Komplete is released, there is a (somewhat) limited time crossgrade/upgrade path from Kontakt and Reaktor. I myself upgraded to Komplete 7 from Reaktor. I can't claim this year will be the same, but it has happened in years past (usually around September/October).

I've not had/heard any problems using it. there was an issue with the drawbars not persisting when you close and reopen the project but that was resolved in 4.2.2. but I haven't even heard/read any complaints about it being out of tune, nor have I personally heard any problems (and I use Vintage Organs in most of my songs).

Glyn Barnes One of the sampled instruments, the B3 is out of tune by a few cents. All the other organs are OK. When challenged on their forum NI claimed this was "part of the charecter of the sound". This is the most recent post on the topic http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166471 thanks Glyn - that particular thread the OP claims that the patches are so far off that even the TUNE knob is not enough to adjust. that would indicate more than a few cents. I can believe it would be off a few cents myself because the threshold may be too low for most people (including myself) to distinguish, but if it's so far off that TUNE wouldn't resolve it, I would think that I could notice that much.

I read the thread again. What he is saying is the tune knob increments are too coarse to make the adjustment, which seems to indicate the amount is small, David Das came back with the solution. Shift-drag the tune knob to do fine-tuning, so you can set it the way you want. I noticed a patch that was slightly off (not sure if the whole library was out or just a patch) but I fixed it in seconds. I think a lot of people, my self included will be hard pressed to detect it, particularly when the rotary speaker is running.

It's a recommendation from a peer for something else that's relevant to the topic an alternative sampler to use with your own samples instead of something that maybe as daunting as Kontakt. It was linked in direct response to Rain's mention of EXS for logic as being an alternative for Windows users. If you can't see that as being different from a paid company rep. coming here to major his wares and only his wares and being careful to omit any shortcomings those products have, then you obviously don't warrant the decency of an explanation such as this. Read the TOS and understand what it says first, run your mouth off later. Credit to Obi over yourself, as even he gets it even if he's a little reluctant to admit it because he's being paid to push the boundary in favour of his company. Anyway's apologies for the hi-jack here folks as this thread has been really informative up until now and I've learned a lot from it. I'd much rather the thought that vendors heard what end-users are saying about their products and there's a good bit of info here for NI to take heed of if they choose to, and that I think is the REAL value of this forum, as opposed to various marketing departments coming here telling US what they want us to hear.
