Boy Ed, is my wife mad at you!

She says the last thing I need is the Slate tape emulation, Kontakt 5, etc.

6 must be due soon then...

Does anyone use it as a sampler anymore?  Or is that just for developers these days to sell newer versions of old libraries that are designed solely work on the newest Kontakt releases in order to keep us buying the same stuff year on year?

I would only recommend upgrading from Kontakt 4 to Kontakt 5 if you really need the new features (Time Machine Pro, extra filters, etc.), or if a library is only for Kontakt 5. Otherwise, the factory sample libraries that come with K5 is the same as K4, I believe.

Personally, I use Kontakt Player because it's the softsampler which plays the libraries I use. The reason I'd upgrade to full isn't for editing possibilities or such - it's only to get the additional content and be able to load more libraries. Otherwise, it's much too big and complex for my needs. Same thing could probably said of all the major ones out there - from Halion to Mach 5.

If I really have to create and tweak instruments, nothing beats Logic's own EXS-24 - as simple and easy to use as it gets, plus, it's perfectly integrated. I always wished Cakewalk would integrate a similar sampler. As an alternative, I used to rely on Disco DSP's High Life which was free back then.

Exactly, K5 seems like it paying a license fee to NI just to run the newer libraries that don't use the newer functionality but only run under 5.

I'd really like to see them thrash out a better deal for developers using it to produce libraries for the newest player rather taxing the end users to haul around the whole bloated thing when its use is largely as a player for the libraries for most people anyway.

As I understand it the licensing currently is too much for most content developers to bear so they have to rely on the users having to have the 'FULL' version.  I'm sure better licensing arrangements could benefit everyone including NI.

    But what do I know?

I'm very much in alignment with that POV.

A good lightweight alternative to EXS-24 on windows is this one.

I like you use the KPlayer for the compatiblle libraries and use the NN-XT in Reason for patches I want to set up myself which is pretty much functionally equivalent to the Image Line one.  i.e. simple and flexible with the formats it uses.

But the upgrade price is still $119.  isn't this the same price for the upgrade as normal?  i am going to wait for Komplete 9--it should be coming soon and upgrading to it won't be too much and I can use one of those 10% or 15% discounts at GC when they have them.  Nope, not going jump on this one; the K5 player works fine for right now.  Wonder what new products they will through in with K9?

As a non-owner of Kontakt, how do the included orchestral sounds compare to GPO4? It appears they might be a sort of VSL lite.

On the topic of Kontakt Player licensing, it's not necessarily that the licensing costs are too great, it's just that it's not feasible to license the Player for smaller libraries. That's why a majority of Kontakt Player libraries are collections of instruments and cost over $200.

No, I will not be upgrading Kontakt. I've upgraded 3 times so far, but not this time.

The library's exactly the same as K4, there is no new factory content. (Even if there was new content I wouldn't care much because the factory content is weak anyway. I use the tuba and orchestral bass drum. That's about it.) There are no new features in K5 that I care about (don't use loops).

The only advantage to upgrading is you will then be granted the privilege of buying other NI products, which require K5. But there are no must-have NI libraries. There is, AFAIK, not a single NI-branded sample library that doesn't have a better third-party substitute. And most 3rd-party products that require full Kontakt are compatible with K4, and a great many are K3.5+.

This situation will likely change, I'm sure. NI, like Microsoft, have their ways to make you fall into line. Ultimately, resistance is futile. But I'm not surrendering today.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

All the NI libraries that work with the free K5 player so even that is not a reason to upgrade.

The bugbare for me is only Windows 7 is supported. Even if it works, its not supported on earlier systems and it would only take a patch somewhere in Windows or Kontakt for it all fall over.

I'm a sucker, I guess.  I didn't see anything compelling to upgrade Ozone or some others (I forget now), and I wasn't going to pay $250 to upgrade to K5, but $119 was near my threshold of pain ($100), so I pulled the trigger with free shipping.

I do wish it had some new libraries with it.
