manthe & riojazz,
Thank you both for the input! Currently I’m running a MOTU midi express XT (a few times lately Sonar has failed to recognize it and I’ve had to re-boot) so the 4 midi in/out would be nice. I haven’t used the SMPTE in quite sometime; last time I tried to use it the system locked up. One less device for Windows & Sonar to manage! I’m used to working with an analog mixer so the idea of “near zero latency monitoring” (I think that is how the RME manual reads) DOES NOT appeal to me. Just to clarify, you ARE monitoring the analog section of the 1884 while tracking? Generally I bounce a “tracking mix” and archive everything else as I track guitars and vocals. The Gina has 8 outs and the 688 4 busses so the 8 analog outs would yield more than enough flexibility; alternative headphone mixes and any re-amp needs. 2 headphone outs on the 1884; right? Having the I/O in the rack (with the RME) looked like a potential plus. I’m trying to downsize and get everything into one desk. I “hide” a Peavey StudioMix & Ozone keyboard under the video & nearfield monitors, pulling them out when I need it. If you add the “side-car” can one surface control tracks and the other the busses? Or do you have to page through to the busses regardless? As far as the pres, a “thicker” sound. I guess a little more coloration, maybe not as transparent as the RME? It seems there is quite a support group here on the forum, that’s always a plus. How are the Tascam forums?
Again thank you both for your time,

Tom Deering

ORIGINAL: DeeringAmps

To all FW-1884 users,
IF You had it to do aver again, would you buy the FW-1884? I'm currently doing some upgrades. How good are the pres and the AD/DA? Would I be better off going with the RME FF 800 and the Mackie controller? I realize this is a much pricer solution, I had thought about the DM-3200 (seems there were some performance issues with that and the DM-4800) but would like to scale down size wise. I've been using the Tascam 688 MidiStudio, into an Echo Gina these days, since I started with Cakewalk 3.0. If you could budget for it, where would you go from the FW-1884?

Thanks,

From a hardware perspective - Definitely! - It sits alone in it's class and has for years - Not many interfaces on the market can say that

From a support perspective.........................

The Tascam forums are privately owned and not connected in any form to Tascam the company - but they are quite active and helpful.

Bottom line - If this is the hub of your studio you can have anybody in your room and not be the least bit embarassed about your equipment

Just sent the following email,

Dear TASCAM,

When are the Vista 32 bit and 64 bit drivers for the 1884 going to be released? Also, when is both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of the updated SONAR control surface plugin for the 1884 going to be released?

I have been emailing you all about this for nearly 8 months now on the Vista issue, and for nearly a year on the SONAR issue. The answers have been as follows, in order from my emails- at Vista's release, May 2007, and no reply to the last email. Other users have reported you to say July 2007 and August 2007 as well for release dates. Note that each of these dates have passed.

Thanks in advance for your reply,

ChronoT52

I suppose we'll see a "SONAR 7 and the FW-1884" thread before too long.

We are currently working on FW-Series Vista drivers for the official version of the OS.

These are the updated target dates:
Vista 32 - September 2007 (by the end of the month)
Vista 64 - September 2007 (by the end of the month)

In the meantime it is suggested that the product be used on a non-Media Center XP platform.

Please check the model's webpage periodically for further updates on this subject.
If you are a U.S. resident and have registered your product accurately, you will receive an email when the drivers are ready for download.
http://www.tascam.com/registration.php?que=go;33,2003&type=html

You're welcome to use the attached Sonar plugin under the condition that you understand it is still in beta.

If you decide to use it, we'd appreciate your feedback.

Thank you for your interest in TASCAM product.

The plugin they included isn't anything new, and it isn't 64 bit so I can't use it. The release date of the Vista drivers has me a bit more optimistic.

I'm still waiting and waiting and waiting...
I thought the drivers would be here by now.
I'm still waiting and I'm not going away.
I want to keep the 1884, then I want to sell, then a little hope comes and I want to keep it then I want to sell again.
I'm still waiting.

FYI, I have no problems with the Tascam FW-1884 under version 7, in the very limited way I use it. Quick reaction posted at:

Welp, being that October 1 is Monday, I suppose they're working round the clock to release the drivers this weekend, since they said the drivers would be released by end of September in my last correspondance with them.

Well... I went ahead and jumped in and loaded the new FW-1884 drivers in Sonar 7.

Here is some of what I've learned:
Loading the drivers were no issues. ( Sonar Driver V1.50 and Tascam Beta Driver V1.22)
The Sel, Mute and Record buttons all work great.
The Bank button works great.
Clocking works great.
Mark ins/outs work great.
Computer/Midi buttons work great.
So all buttons seem to function great.
I didn't get to the recording part.
I'm going to do this today and post on it.

This might not sound like much yet but it's a far cry from what I had.
I will mention that the faders seemed a little sticky at times don't know why yet.

I'm also getting ready to upgrade the Tascam FW-1884 with the Mechanators mod kit .
Things seem at this point to be looking up.

I guess I should chime in here. Despite some of the other issues I'm having with 7, the 1884 works as good as always. I'm also using th beta drivers. I am 100%, at this point, in terms of functionality. If something is still broken, it is something I don't use.

I am committed to this interface and CS. In fact, I've just done an upgrade. I bought a fitted, custom desk and some FE-8s. Check it out!!!

Just LOVELY!!

GuyPicks - Please let us know how the upgrade goes. I am interested in this myself. I have a lot of great, outboard preamps and channel strips. But, for the low price of this upgrade, it certainly can not hurt. I've even considered picking up a 2nd, used unit to perform the upgrade on so that I don't have down toim during the process. If I get it back and I like it, I'll do it for the original one and place the newer one in production. That way I'll have a spare. When you've committed this much, and your studio absolutely relies on it, it only makes sense.

I plan on upgrading my audio interfaces soon. I will probably get a 16 channel Lynx or Apogee. In this case, the 1884 will become an ADAT extension, in case I ever need more than 16 channels. But it will remain my CS of choice!

I'm happy with it for now...

manthe,

Dude..., that is a really nice setup you have there.
You also have 3 FEs, nice.
Where did you get the desk?
I'm really interested in this.

Just one more question.
Do you faders get sticky every now and then?

Sticky faders?....only when I look at gear porn! JK.

No, I never have, to date.

The desk is actually custom built to spec. I bought it from someone who had it built for their 1884 and FE-8s. I can try to get the spec and builder info, if you're interested. If you want to buy a desk for the 1884 specifically, Argosy has them in several configurations. They're really nice, but a bit pricey. You can have one built for half or less. Or, if you're handy (I'm not *that* handy), you can do it yourself for the cost of materials and your time.

The Argosy desk is here: http://www.argosyconsole.com/fw1884.htm

Mididreamer, as I understand it second-hand, this driver is from Tascam. It was developed by Frontier Designs months ago (February?) and Tascam only released it in August. Even then, they won't post it on their site. A forum member had to post it, hence the link shown above.

Not the way to do customer service, don't you think?

However, the FW-1884 seems to be running well for me under SONAR 7 and this beta driver.

Well, I went digging in the forums over at Tascam, and I found a version 1.5 driver for the 1884 - anyone know anything about this?

I don't remember exactly where I found it (I was reading for over an hour and grabbing anything that looked relevant), so I uploaded it to RapidShare:

http://rapidshare.com/files/59412121/FW1884_Win_Install_1_50_drv_RC2.exe

My unit is in mothballs at the moment, so if anyone can tell me anything about this, I would appreciate it.

TIA

The current version of the install that shows in the FW-1884 control panel is 1.50, so that seems to be what this is. The driver we're talking about is a SONAR-specific driver for the FW-1884. The current version for that on the Tascam website is 1.21. The beta driver is 1.22. That should help you keep track of what is what.

I have skimmed thought this thread and haven't found what I was looking for regarding the EQ controls on the FW-1884.

With the Beta driver, has anyone gotten the EQ section working with the per track EQ? I see it works fine with the old cakewalk EQ and controls some of the options on the first plugin inserted on the track but not the sonitus EQ.

Is that the same for the rest of you? Any good work arounds to share? I'm still on 6.2, how about 7, does ACT offer any improvements with the 1884 now?

Thanks!
