Good ideas.

It would be wise of us to go down the entire list of 1884/Sonar functionality and make sure nothing has been unintentionally broken during the repair.

I went through the FW-1884 Sonar documentation function by function and re-tested each item. I found no problems other than the two previously noted involving Automation and Sends.

I did find a couple of 'oddities' that don't qualify as bugs, but I'll report them here so you all are aware of them:

- the Control Panel shortcut button didn't work after I installed the new plugin. However, after I went to Windows Control Panel and activated the the FW-1884 dialog, the 1884's contrlol panel button began to work.

- Several of the 1884 functions that affect multiple tracks (un-mute all, un-solo all, and disarm all record-armed tracks) take a long time to refresh the 1884's display. These functions take effect immediately on the Windows Sonar screen, but may take as long as 20-25 seconds to update on the 1884 console. Unless you wait a while, you may think they're not working.

I'll report my findings to TEAC customer service.

What is the contact name/email you've been using for Frontier? I couldn't find it on the Frontier site.

HW - His name is Brian Geroge I believe the email is brian@frontierdesign.com

He is a good guy - don't want to overload him but I did send him an update last night just to keep him in the loop - Remember - This is not his issue - Frontier just got involved to help us out - I believe we have Mr. Jay Stephens to thank for that contact if I recall correctly.

PS - Tascam did finally send me the .dll zip file after I already had it - They said they are seeking feedback so they are the ones we need/want to work with at this point ....

hopefully!!

Thanks for the work on this HW - I'm in L.A. right now so I am not at my DAW - wish I could be of more help in testing but you seem to be putting it through the paces pretty good -Keep that feedback coming

Hello Dwayne,

Holly Smokes! You guys are just now getting that???? Arrrrggghhhhh! Man

I am sorry it took so long for that to get out, it has been done and
delivered for months. I can't imagine an excuse for that.

Yes there, are a couple limitations in it that are still in Cakewalks
hands and should have been documented by Tascam in the plug-in docs
(please tell me there was a doc file?). The Pre/Post and Enable/Disable

functions are noted in that doc. There might be something else too but
its been so long I can't recall about the REC and Play LEDS. I'll have
to go back and check my notes.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you at least have this much. We will try to
take a look at it with S7 but I don't know if there are any changes
that
apply yet.

Best,

Brian

it's sad to hear that the file was delivered to Tascam months ago and that we are getting it just now through a back door- without documentation. a sad reflection on Tascam.

so, it appears the ball is in CW's court?

thanks to everyone who contributed to the cause. hopefully, we'll get a fixed version soon- either thru Tascam or CW.

Was any new functionality introduced with this new driver? I'm wondering if I should try the 1.22 beta driver with SONAR version 5.2. [I could always reinstall 1.21.]

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

Not that I can see.

I'd say that its time to upgrade to 6!

Ultimately, I decided the benefits and features of 6 outweighed the functionality issues with the 1884...especially the ability to record automation (ie, use the GR2 floor controller while tracking, etc.).

In fact, I am struggling with UN-learning all of the work-a-rounds I had in place. I had become used to it!

Take the plunge!!

Hi All,

Just thought I would begin compiling a list of new known bugs with the latest DLL. The best thing we can do is to send these bugs to Tascam and Frontier Design ASAP. I have added number 5.

I’m not sure what number 3 is talking about. I just copied it from one of the posts, so if anyone can clarify this one… please do.

Sean

1. Aux Send controls still do not work properly:
2. - Cannot set Pre/Post
3. - Cannot Enable/Disable

4. Automation recording still doesn't work properly; the REC and PLAY lights on the transport get stuck in the ON position.

5. using the FW-1884 mute buttons do not get recorded when using (record automation).

Hey Sean,

#3 is in regards to being able to enable/disable the aux sends from the FW1884 - This is normally done by holding down the selected aux button and pressing the solo button on the chosen track.

As far as the list goes - I have sent one already to both (You can see Brian from Frontier's acknowledgement). Frontier is probably out of this by now as I believe some/most of the remaining functionality details lie in the hands of Cake (see above again from Brian)

This is why I was asking if anybody had contacted Cakewalk Technical Support?

Sean,

I'm certainly no expert, but I don't believe that Mute is an automatable parameter, with or without the FW-1884. When you enable a track for automation by pressing the W button in Sonar, the automatable parameters such as volume, pan, etc are outlined in red. Mute, Solo and some others are not outlined.

You could probably achieve the same effect by pushing the volume slider all the way down and automating that.

Sean,

My apologies. You are correct. I looked harder and saw that Mute IS automatable in Sonar. And as you say, it doesn't work from the FW-1884.

just to add to this....

RE: controlling sends..

when you press an aux send button to contol send, it would indicate, with the sel button in the 1884 if that send was enabled or not. I'd like to have that back.

believe me no need.. only a few things fixed...nothing major. I'd like to see it work even better. however, I'm gonna say it first and predict this...(sorry )

tascam releases the drivers for S6, vista 32 vista 64......and............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................thats it, nothing else.

unless someone who can program drivers for this thing decides to mess with it. Cake cant afford to mess with this... and I understand. They got a lot on there plate...it just business. It may feel personal to us. Oh well, I give up. the 1884 works fine as it is. it could work better, of course. I'll use it untill it dies. then I'll try not to buy something from tascam again, but will be forced to, somehow I just hope companies like Frontier Designs are still around.

I harbor no ill will towards any man.

The end of an era...

I sold my 1884 on ebay... I got 800.00 for a used paper weight. I'm happy, yet sad at the same time. What I got to replace it better knock my socks off....

I'm still angry at Tascam for being goobers... lol

So, how are things going for those of you with the upgrade?

Any further communication with Tascam about refinements for those remaining problems?

I purchased Sonar 6PE and have not installed because of all of the above concerns. I feel like Cakewalk is leaving me behind. What is the likelihood they are stringing us out until Sonar 7 comes out and they will have the FW bug fixed? If they dont I will look for another audio solution.

My brothers and I agree with you completely.

It seems to be that Cakewalk doesn't realize that Tascam has been a major force in home recording for years, and Tascam doesn't realize the same about Sonar/Cakewalk !

The FW-1884 is a quality machine that works perfectly with Sonar 4 (Public Enemy for instance). We have heard good reviews about it from Nuendo uses as well as Logic users. The FW-1884 is no lemon--neither is Sonar. We just hope that Cakewalk realizes that our interface costs three time the price of their software, so we cannot afford to be loyal much longer.

Tascam also needs to work on keeping present and future customers. It is a fatal customer service error that both companies are keeping us dangling like this. If no solution is coming, we need to know now.

OK, lets look at it at thier point of view.

Tascam..(the Evil giant) doesn't want to support a (how old product ??? ) why would they??? when they can sell you a new one with "better features"

Frontier Designs, A small company ...If I assuming correctly... sold the designs to tascam for the 1884, to make some money, get their business established, or for some nice capital and rights/sales ...whatever the deal was made..... as far as I'm concerned they knocked the ball out of the park with this product...If only they could have kept it for themselves... all of us 1884 users would be in a much better situation..
and a would futher guess that they singed rights away stating that they couldn't compete with a simialr products...obvoulsy this is just conjecture, but plausable....right?

now the transport and the Alpha track are both KICK ASS!!! products. and so is the 1884, really.I have no resevations saying that.

it's tascam that has cast us asside.

Now..... Cake.....if we can just implement the ACT features with the 1884 .... uhhhhhh can we say heaven....
uh there's midi controls you know, theres also the 2 Vurtual midi ports, why cant we use those????

I'm not a programer, I dont pretend to be. just an IT wannabe, musician...

what it comes down to is money.......there's no money in the cure, it's in the diesase....and that disease is GAS!!!! you all know what I mean...we need to spend, spend, spend...........( oh, sorry maybe that statement is to drippy with sarcasim)...

I dont know if its in cake's intrest to get ACT working with the 1884.,, but for sure that would make me happy....WAI would be a great feature to have with the 1884 / bank changes.... the possiblities are great.... it really doesnt make sense....1884 is a great product...well thought out....the desings done. and could work....working with ACT would on get more sale for Tascam..........I mean why????? I just can understand.... does it cost more money to researh and develop a new product???? or does it make sense to keep selling a good product, that can be tweaked ( )... and keep making sales??? they got a list of the parts, they know what the problems are, this product doens't have to die like this....Its a waiste.....as waist of money for us... a waist of pottental sales for tascam, and cake for that matter....they won a lot of people over with the Steiny fiasco... they could win some more if only the 1884 worked better then it did in Sonar 5... yeah I knw, your saying ' how could work better than it did in Sonar 5???" ....ahhhh, yea, I think it could.

this is more than I type for work

please excuse any mispellings, rambleing grammer and puntuation....i anit got non of dat edumaction.

I harbor no ill will towards any man.

But they still push this product, and produce and it is still active. They have not replaced or upgraded it yet. They have nothing else to push on us in this category. In fact, this board still competes (and beats out!) newer, similar offerings (Project I/O).

No disrespect meant....plus, I have just as much contempt for Tascam as anyone here, but I haver to disagree with this point.

I'm again trying to stay calm about this and not over-react but do you guys see Brian's post above? He states clearly where the remaining issues are - Cakewalk

I know , It's very easy to rain down on Tascam - Heck - from what I hear they and MOTU have some of the worst customer service in the industry but this is (from what Brian tells us) Cakewalk's final mile to walk.

OK - Now - I have a sticky Fader #5 that seems to be grabbing and is not smooth anymore - any of you gurus know how to fix that? - PLEEEEASE

PS - I am hopeful we can get further with this but I think to sit on this board and pound on Tascam is useless - We need Cake who we already know may have the best Customer service in the industry to do what they do best.

im calm............im calm....................im calm.............................

Hey DK,

from Brian's reply I gather that there may be a couple issues that Cakewalk can help with regarding the plug-in functionality as it is today. And I hope they do. But I am pretty darn sure some of these bigger questions, like ACT support, and other expanded functionality, lie in the hands of TASCAM/Frontier. Cakewalk already has a large external control development kit that includes much of this stuff, but it has to be implemented in the FW-1884 Sonar Plug-In. In this case Cakewalk doesn't write that, the hardware manufacturer does. So I think it is a bit unfair to beat-up on Cakewalk here other than to ask for their continued cooperation with the hardware manufacturer. They've been really good about this in the past compared to just about any other company I can think of.

Skymaster,

Do you see me "beating up" on Cakewalk here?

I've been all Cake since PA9 but I think it is a bit much to say they have been active (at least publicly) with this matter.

Read my (and other's) post - I think it is pretty balanced and is just asking for Cake's feedback on where we are at in the process.

Man, I have to tell you - There are way to many people around here who can't seem to seperate constructive criticism with dissatisfaction with the product as a whole. It's not like we (I anyway) are asking for them to stop work on S7 - I know it's business and i want Cake to succeed and grow - It's better for all of us - I'm just hoping for some feedback - thats all.

Edit: Skymaster - This came off sounding a little harsh and I appologize - It's really not directed at you - I guess my frustration just came out becuase it seems like lately if anyone ever has a negative thing to say or a complaint about Cakewalk they get attacked and I overreacted - Sorry about that!! Applogies
