A $2.6 Billion Gamble for Curiosity
While everyone else was concentrating on the Olympics it looks like NASA has finally been able to land something successfully on Mars. HERE is the link. Apparently they're still trying to find intelligent life out there having failed to find it down here I guess. Here's the first couple of photos returned by the new rover:

If they'd landed it at whatever the British equivalent is on Mars there would be no-one there and they'd have taken the wheels and the photo-electric cells off it and they'd be on e-Bay by now...

I think it's about the same amount of tax money as the so-called "First Family" of the U.S. has spent on vacations over the last four years... Oops! There's that dang TOS again!

So you're suggesting that rather than killing bad guys with guns you could bore them to death with tales of alleged, sketchy evidence that there may possibly once have been a puddle in a place that no-one will ever go to ? I suppose it could work, but more likely that they will have shot you before you finished telling them. ;)

I think it's a great idea... I mean, we've only doubled the National Debt in less then 4 years... which means if we get 4 MORE years that should grow exponentially.. There's only millions of people without jobs here in the US. So what's a few Billion dollars to look at dust on a rock millions of miles away that we can never get to, nor should we care about? After all, it's just YOUR money, so why should you care?

$2.6 billion is approx 0.04% of the total US expenditure for one year. Looking at it another way, it's 12 cents per person living in the US. Just thought I'd lob that in.

Hi, When you got the money ... use it! Better story was one in Guam from a friend in Santa Barbara that was stationed there after his tour in VeitNam, and he was speaking like he knew about this kind of stuff ... so at the end of the year, their budget had about 1.3 million left over. So they build a wall on the edge of the beach to separate it from the road, that is about 24 inches high, and it is about a mile long ... and that f_____g wall is the straightest line you will ever find in your whole life. It is a "perfect wall" ... and the budget was saved! Not suggesting that there are green men in mars or bacteria that we can save the world with ... but what the heck ... when the money is there you do it! Some of that money, btw, is private, as there are some companies that are adding their own money as investment to the rockets and the science experiments involved, all of which will likely get further use in the future in more universe exploration. Personally, I don't mind searching the cosmos ... I do think that when it comes to the "future", it is no different than your children ... how much do you care about their time and place and chance? Yes, we can not see it, and neither can they ... but any attempt to learn is better than wasting on f_____g bombs for religion, or for some groups that want to keep women hidden and locked up, or for _______________________________________ ... you name it!

There are an estimated 560,000 people that will die from cancer this year. If we asked them if we should put the money into Mars or cancer research ( that could benefit other peoples too) to the tune of 2.6 billion do ya really think they care if it's .12 cents per person? Or do ya think that finding cures is more important? The government has given their answer and I don't recall ever being asked.....and it's my 12 cents. And not to nit-pick...there are about 150 million taxpayers in the US. So for what it's worth $17.00 is a little closer. ( and not all of them pay...that's just the ones that filed)

Remember that a good portion of that money went to people working. As I alluded to above, during just one year, the First Lady spent 1/10th of that amount of the tax payers money going on vacations... Now which would YOU rather have your tax dollars spent on? Undeserved vacations for those in or near political office or on cancer research? At least the NASA expenditure has some scientific merit.

Oh yeah, before anyone tries to counter that other political figures have racked up as much or more (whether they did or not), I don't feel ANY of these Public Servants should be taking vacations at all. If the people they are supposed to be representing don't have jobs or can't afford to take time off, then why do they get to using money supplied by those same people?

Well it's cool as all get out that they know how to land something on another planet. I can't imagine how they do that. I'm lucky to get something recorded and they can send photos back too! Man that is something to be proud about. It's just my opinion that there is a right time to be doing things. It doesn't matter what I think about this topic but I sure couldn't maintain my household/family welfare by spending money the way our government does.......well come to think about it they're showing us just exactly how bad they can do things and sure don't need us to prove that.
