Naw. I stuck with straight up Tunomatic bridges and just bent the neck to dive bomb for years. Made all my buddies cringe. Never snapped a neck though. Now I seem to be able to wield a regular Strat style tremolo without throwing things out of tune. Don't know how. Just kind of happened.

Agreed...Double locking tremelos suck. I'll stick to my tunomatic on my SG. My other guitar has a Wilkinson on it, but I don't even put the bar on it when I play it.

I don't know why, but I never really got into a tremolo. My Strats always had them, but I would eventually take them off because they always seemed to get in my way. I learned to do more vibrato with my hands. None of my current geets have a tremolo on them. I guess I need to get a guitar with one again, one of these days. That and I still plan to play slide some day.

On the flip side, I love playing with the trem (though I don't have one on my current guitar). Oh well!

I also have a Floyd Rose and love to do dive bombs (just got it adjusted), but it still does get out of tune and is annoying. Satriani just makes it look easy.......

not all Floyd Roses are equal - the original Floyd is good; also the Ibanez Edge Pro; and the Kahler system. Licensed Floyds vary wildly in quality though. Set-up properly, they are rock-solid. Locking tuners, well-cut nut and a good quality trem (such as how PRS and EBMM do it) can be pretty good too.

I have two Ibanez guitars with the original Floyd Rose Edge (89' 550, 90' 560). My favorite trems of all time! If everything is set up right, they are rock solid...

I went with an original Floyd Rose for this custom (which I hope Bo - aka Space Cowboy - is enjoying now). It's great, but what a huge chunk of metal! I think I'm going with a Kahler on the next one (that's still being built - lol, it will be "vintage" by the time I actually get it I think!).

Guitarist Poll. All the Strats I've purchased have tremelos that work very well. I know how to set them and the guitar up. I haven't bought a guitar with another type of tremelo. I haven't built a guitar with a tremelo.

That's easy, Beagle. You just let an upright piano go out of tune over a period of 20+ years. It's the same effect.

interesting thing, guthrie govan's new sig model charvel, has an old school floyd rose bridge.. like the original, with NO fine tuners... but no locking nut..... just locking tuners. the only reason i could see for having a bridge WITHOUT the fine tuners, would be if the strings were pre-stretched and would not lengthen from the use of the trem.. and even then, the idea that the string should slip thru the nut with the right setup, kinda negates the downside of no fine tuners... i use Kahler trems, and have for 30 years, have soldered the ball end of the string, from the first twist all the way up to just short of the bridge saddles, and this keeps my guitars in almost perfect tune (relative to compensated) with heavy bar use

I have always wanted to try a Floyd Rose as I understoood they were about the best. I have a Wilkinson on my one strat copy and my JTV has a pretty decent trem. on it, probably comparible to a Floyd Rose. I got into the guitar thing later and so theres a lot I don't know. I don't like a guitar without the tremelo though. The main reason I recently took a Schecter C-1 Hellraiser back was because it didn't have one on it and I realized I use it quite often on some things. I don't do serious dives with it. I mainly like to have it close so I can use it for small changes. The most annoying thing is that if the bar is too loose it falls limp and away from a fast reach and then it's pretty much usless to me. I like to have it set so that it's always close.
