A Midi Manglers Must Have!

There is so much good stuff on these forums that get buried under the sands of time.

Some threads I refer to time and time again.

Wanna route an old drum track through a different sampler or any track to any synth via a drum map for that matter?

How about adding MFX whilst recording the results and have it playback through your favourite soft synth in realtime?

If these things and more are what you are trying to achieve check out this gem from B Rock from a couple of years ago.  I've made hard copy of it I referred to it so often.

64 bit users need not apply...

Update: LoopBe1 or LoopBe30 are now 32/64 bit capable WDM drivers and work on Vista or Windows 7 too.

LoopBe1 is free for non-commercial use and the 30 port LoopBe30 version is less than 20 bux.

Thanks for that Jon - if somebody had the time, and patience, it would be a great idea to find all these informative threads and either paste them all into one, new thread, or persuade the Bakers to make stickies out of them.

Yeah, I certainy recall that thread but my big concern was just that.  To become reliant on a 32-bit tool (that apperently is not a VST and not bit-bridge-able) wouldn't lead to a happy conclusion.  So questions remain.  If a virtual MIDI cable isn't a VST, then what is it?  If it's a 32-bit external process, can it coexist with a 64-bit DAW?

Anyone know the answer to this?

I think it is more akin to a driver.

BTW, LoopBe1 and LoopBe30 have been available in 64 bit form for awhile now. I use LoopBe30 in Win7 x64 just fine.

Just checked and LoopBe30 is a Windows WDM kernel mode driver.

It's a legacy MME driver the one I use the Maple Midi cable which won't co-exist on a 64 bit machine.

But there you go the LoopBe VMCs are available as 64 bit versions, so I was wrong 64 bit users can play too. YAY!

B-Rock's illustrated setups here will work just fine with the Loopbe stuff.

Just take note of the caution about creating a midi 'feedback' loop and prepare for another dimension of flexibility with midi.

Virtual ports built into X1 would have been a good idea.  I wonder if they'll be included.

True that. I've done it more than once. Luckily, the nerds put shortcut detection into LoopBe30 (and LoopBe1, IIRC) and covered my rear end.

Yeah, thanks for the eye in on the LoopBe stuff DW, that's one of the things I can cross off my 'things preventing me from migrating to 64 bit list'.

Thats the whole point of re-visiting old threads like this as it brings in a fresh perspective.

Ironic.  I don't post very often anymore at the CW forums.  But the "MIDI Manglers" title of this thread caught my eye and piqued my interest.  And I learn of the 64-bit LoopBe update.  Good news.

If these things and more are what you are trying to achieve check out this gem from B Rock from a couple of years ago.

I don't believe that I ever wrote about the following VMC applications on these forums in any depth.  Here's a link to a brief discussion on converting Sonar's Shapes to MIDI (and back again).  I've also been able to process & mangle external MIDI modulator output (Lexicon MPX-1, Moog pedal, etc.) using similar routing.

Until there's an alternative, virtual MIDI cables really are an essential multi-tool.

    Cool.

Yes Tom I miss your posts a lot, but I'm really grateful for the legacy of great info you've left behind.

I use quite a stock of midi shapes of various preset lengths so your linked discussion there is very pertinent.

I share your enthusiasm for VMC's for routing flexibility but I have noticed that some fight shy of using them for some reason.  I can't ever remember them remotely causing anything bad to happen though.  In fact I sometimes I forget that the extra midi ports are there because I'd previously installed them, I just take them for granted now.

Even if some ITB solution came in a future update as an alternative I imagine it would be the same thing in principal so why not benefit now I say.
