A little walk in the park......

Last week the wife and I went to NYC for her annual "Lets Spend Everything You Have" weekend. I couldn't stand to watch her try and burn the magnetic strip from all our credit cards, so I took a walk in Central Park. These are some of the sights.

It was a great long weekend. We went to dinner at Ruths Chris Steakhouse on Thursday night for a fantastic meal. Friday night, and friend of mine in the city hooked us up with great seats to see Jim Jeffries at Carolines. If you like your comedy rough and raunchy, this guy might be the best in world right now. Saturday we spent in Little Italy and dined al fresco on Mulberry Street. The wife really enjoyed that. Saturday night we had 12 row orchestra to see the play That Championship Season with Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Chris Noth and Jim Haffigan. Fantastic show followed by a late dinner at our favorite Mexican food place. I'm tired, broke, and my feet hurt.

Yes Janet, they were. And on a weekday! It's more active on the weekends. All of them playing in different parts along the way. Most of them had there instrument cases open and accepting money. A few had CD's for sale. I'd stop and listen for a bit, and ask if I could take a few pics. I spoke with most of them for a little bit. A great way to spend an afternoon.

    Randy, I have 2 questions-
    1. Where's Bapu?
    2. Did you happen to ask the harpist how they got the harp into the park?

All of my original comments dissolved after he mentioned Ruths Chris...  Now I'm drooling on the keyboard which isn't good because not only can I not come close to affording steak right now, I can't afford to ruin my keyboard!

BTW - that group pic with the fiddler, celloist, lady in white trying to look above it all and scraggly guitarist looks like a compilation of four different genres!  What were they performing together anyway?

Pic #10 has me curious. What is that? Obviously it's bowed, but how did he finger it? Did you get a chance to talk to him?

I keep going back to pic #3 of the harpist. Man, that's a nice shot.

Hey Robert, I tried talking to him, but he didn't seem to understand English. I asked him what it was, and he smiled and offered the bow to me. There was no way I was going to attempt to get anything musical sounding out of that. Yes, he fingered it, but I couldn't quite grasp how the hell the thing worked, but it sounded beautiful.

Yeah, I like that shot of the harpist also. I was walking away after listening and taking a few shots, then turned back a saw that shot and just took it quickly. Really glad that it turned out just like I saw it.

Randy, it's probably a good thing you didn't pick up the Uhura (or whatever Mike said it was), and try to play it.  It might have become a new musical obsession.

Your wife might have had something to say about that.

Yeah, I had to throw myself out of Rudy's on 48th Street after I found myself playing a stunning Taylor G for an hour or so. Damn near pulled the trigger on it.

About the only thing left is Sam Ash. They bought out Manny's a couple of years ago and the others have bailed out due to high real estate prices. My wife loved Rudy's, especially compared to Sam Ash. Typical limited selection of lefties, but they did have some nice stuff from Eliot Eastons collection. Little high on the prices for me, but it was tempting.

I guess things have changed so much now. I remember hanging out at Manny's as a kid and just reading all the autographed picture that I was tall enough to see. Then I would go next door to Sam-Ash's and purchase strings and picks ( the little stuff was cheaper at Sam's ). I remember when Rudy's place opened for business. We would go in on an off-day when it wasn't really busy and Rudy would spend some time talking guitars. He also had a repair shop around the corner on 7th as I recall.  Those were some great times as a kid!

I didn't recognize the song he was playing, but it was an awesome sound he got out of that thing.

Yeah, I love the park much more now than how it was back in the 80's. There used to be areas such as the Ramble that unless you were looking for trouble, you had to steer clear of. Now it all seems nice.
