A reminder to clean up your Command Center download folder

In case some of you weren't aware, the CC downloads update files to a folder which you can specify in the CC options, but which defaults to your system drive. For those of you with large system drives this may not be a problem, but if like me you have limited space on an SSD (mine is 250GB) then you might find yourself literally running out of drive space if you don't keep on top of it. This happened to me last night, for the first time in my life I found myself getting "drive full" errors and found that I only had about 50MB free on my system drive. Quickly located the biggest culprit to the CC download folder which was bursting with many GB of files, many of them well past their sell by date!

I deleted them all to free up space and then decided to move the folder location to my data drive, which at 2TB can spare the room. But there is nothing to stop this folder growing unless you manually delete files. Perhaps the Bakers should implement some kind of download folder size limit specifiable by the user, with the oldest files being deleted once this limit has been reached. Just a thought.

Paths tab in the Command Center settings. Click the gear in the upper right of the Command Center to get to settings. I recommend using a directory junction instead of changing the path. Otherwise, remember the path is reset when logging out of the Command center.

I've been gathering the CCC install files to my F: drive which currently is a 1TB (soon to be 4TB) ever since we could dictate where to put them.

Thanks for that. I had re-directed my download path in Command Center to another drive, but somehow it got changed back to C:\. I found 6 GB worth of stuff there to delete.

Good to know, thanks sharke. I suppose holding the old files assists in rollbacks but for those of use who hardly ever rollback (and if need to would be just as happy to redownload as it would be such a rare occurence) it would be cool if they had an option to delete old files when newer versions are downloaded. Reason by Propellerheads had a similiar thing going on in the hidden files-- all of a sudden there'd be 15gigs of stuff you had no need for in there.

Yes, the files are cached for rollback. If the Command Center cannot find a file it needs, it will download the file again.

There is an option to delete files in the context menu for each item in the Command Center.

Look in the options in the Command Center, it will show you the path (and there is also a button to take you to the folder).

Whoa, mine was 60gb, so thanks for pointing this out!
I suppose moving them is "safe enough" (ie they're on my PC), but they would be "easily" available again.

Do they need to stay there, on C? The current/latest one, anyway?

You don't need to keep any of them, no.
I usually keep just the current and previous updates of each file, in case I need to rollback quickly.

Re: A reminder to clean up your Command Center download folder 2016/06/17 11:54:47 (permalink)
I checked my setup and like you I have my OS on a SSD card (480GB) and in my rush to load Sonar I didn't change the default folders in CC, so was surprised to find how much space was taken up.  Changed the defaults and must have messed something up and ended up having to do a clean re-install of Sonar (was worth it in the end).  So just a little warning to do it step by step and don't rush it like I must have done .

Was well worth it though, saved around 26Gig, so thanks for the advice

Yes, I got a PM about it so I will post my reply with the steps here.

The name of the new location could be any valid path. In this example I am assuming the default location of "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads" and a new location of "D:\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads"

FYI, ProgramData is a hidden directory.

1. Create the new location "D:\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads"
2. Move the contents from "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads" to "D:\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads"
3. Delete "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads"
4. run cmd.exe as administrator
5. type
mklink /j "C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads" "D:\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads"
