AC-7 Core and new iPad. Works, but questions please
This worked, using instructions found in various threads here. Installation was easy, but how come I have to specify VS-700 as the Control Surface in SONAR X1, rather than Mackie Control?

Upon further experimentation, with the AC-7 Core app in SONAR mode, and the SONAR X1 Control Surface setting of VS-100, here is what works and what does not, unless I'm missing something. Any tips are welcome. WORKS: transport control jog wheel the faders the Rec/Mute/Solo buttons CAN'T FIND: rewind to beginning step forward/backward to next marker HAVE TO BE CAREFUL: I tried a number of the buttons on the app, only to come back to SONAR and find I had set a marker and set lots of automation volume points. Don't know how. WHAT'S INTERESTING: If I put the iPad next to my computer and Tascam FW-1884, moving anything on one moves the same thing on all three! Ok I use the Ac7 Core, it's getting popular around here, Sonar def has to be in makie mode in control surfaces. I'm a liitle confused are you trying to contol a hardware fader as well. Let me know, will be gone for an hour or two but will check in with you to see how you are going. Peace Ben

Thanks. I tried the Mackie control surface setting in SONAR first, and it did not work. Then, because of other threads here, I tried VS-700 which someone recommended, and that immediately started working. Now that it is 'connected', perhaps I should try Mackie as the control surface again? I am not trying to control the FW-1884, but I was just remarking that it does indeed do so. The FW-1884 is also set up as a control surface, and it sits next to the computer. They each control each other.

Sorry mate been nanna napping that damm hill is killing me!! Ok what happens is when you set the contoller up in Makie Mode it seems to keep saying connection, you need to push the reset button. I still not have heard of the mode you are putting it into. Obviously you have Bonjour installed which is an Apple protocol and lets you use RTP Midi which is how you connect your Ipad and Sonar. I should ask first you are using this device wirelessly because I have conncected using the cable, as a side note I have it's baby cousin for my Iphone and was even able to contol the Motu Cuemix software. I use AC-7 on my iPad 1 and also have a Projectmix I/O with X1d. I have two Mackie Controls setup - 1 for the Projectmix which is set to "Projectmix Control Surface" and 1 for AC-7 which is set to "audiopc" (the name of my computer) as indicated in rptMidi. I'm running the iPad over wireless. With the exception of controlling third-party plugins, it works well. I mostly use AC-7 as a wireless remote when I track vocals from the booth. Let me know if you have any questions and when I get home this evening I'll see if I can address them while in the studio.

First, many thanks to those who responded. I changed to Mackie Control in the SONAR X1 Preferences, Control Surface, and it is now working. Clearly, the iPad screen matches better with more functions than just transport and faders. Panning now works, the Home button takes me to the beginning, etc. The app responds more slowly that it did before, though. Sometimes I see a flash of a button like Stop Transport a second after pressing it. I deleted the VS-700 control surface from SONAR, but I still have my FW-1884 connected. I wonder if having both of them makes the iPad work less well (although it worked fine with the wrong setting, VS-700). I also still have the Tranzport control surface active. That makes a total of four places that can control SONAR. Probably bad. Next step: deactivate the Tranzport. I'm going to play with it now, and get to know it better. This type of app with an iPad is probably why Frontier Design decided they should not make a new Tranzport. Thanks again for the help and encouragement!

Yes, deleting the Tranzport as a control surface seems to have fixed the app's performance. Things seem to be working very well now!

After using it a bit more, I have found it to be a wonderful tool for replacing my Tranzport. Two questions, please. 1. Sometimes I start SONAR X1d and the app doesn't connect, so I go into the SONAR Preferences, Control Surface and notice that there is a blank entry for Input where it should say StudioPC (my computer's name) as it does for output. In other words, it loses the input device. I should point out I am just beginning to use this setup, and in the meantime, I frequently run other music programs such as Adobe Audition and Band in a Box. If it always required that I have to go to Control Surface and re-select my computer as the input device, I could understand, but sometimes it works without doing that. Any suggestions why it is not always staying connected? 2. I registered on the forum for Saitara Software, and found a thread inquiring whether there was a user guide. A helpful poster directed us to the Help in SONAR for the Mackie Control Surface. I found and read that, but this help raises more questions than it answers because I cannot find a diagram of the AC-7 Core screen and a description of each button. Does this exist? I would be willing to write such a guide once I figure out the secret handshake. [EDITED for formatting after using Firefox.]

Mackie Control is the recommended one to use, although some have reported VS 700 works as good. Me, I've always used the Mackie set up. It works after only one "reset". However, one that doesn't work on my set up is V-Control. Curious. Cheers, Jerry

I've got it working... tho not everything... The transport controls are working... when I first installed it the faders were working. I was trying to get the meters to display and pressed oa few buttons... Now the faders don't work... and something strange is going on with the banks? When I try mute/solo, it's not affecting the track indicated, but it does seem to be functioning for something??? any ideas would be helpful... Thanks... Keni

The same thing happened to me. Pressing a bunch of buttons, because there is no user guide, can leave you with an app that doesn't work and there doesn't seem to be a reset. Try this: Press Reset to make sure you have a connection to SONAR. Make sure these three buttons are lit (green): TRK/BUS in the upper right group MAIN in the middle group of 12, just the one in the upper left, not the other Main on the third row of that middle group TRACK in the bottom group of twelve

Ok when that happens or if you can't see the input just reclick the input that you usually use. It can be a bit messy I hope I understood your question properly. We are talking about the midi input yea, if so follow my advice. Also have a look at V-Control free version, the pro version costs 50 bucks but the free version will give you transport controls and it is much less buggy. Give it a try. Any more questions, jusk ask. Ben

The v-control guy has given me some hints, but so far zilch. 39€ for nowt, so far. So did you do any tweaking or such like to get it going ? Cheers, Jerry

Ok have you installed Ney-Fi?? http://www.neyrinck.com/en/downloads/v-control-pro here is the link, just make sure you dowmload the right version for whatever Windows you are using and I hope this is Windows Seven, this one has nothing to do with RTP Midi, i'm not sure about Bonjour. You need to install Ney-Fi, Ok I was having trouble getting this to work, Once you install this wireless midi protocol, you should see it in your midi in out in Sonar click this as your midi-in-out and it should start to function. Remember all the normal crap, Macki control is the contoller protocol. If this doesn't work let me know and we run through the issue step by step. Peace Ben

Thanks Ben. The problem is getting ney-fi to "see"" my PC. On the iPad the computer name is repoted as being 'None', whereas it should report it as JerrysPC, as per rtpmidi. Sonar recognises V-control as a midi device., which i then set up as a Mackie controller, as per AC7 yada yada. The mackie just says 'connecting' and does nothing, even if you go away, have a pint and go back agin. What i really need to know is if you did any specific tweaks or just ran it out of the box ? I'm currently in discusions with the guy who wrote the programme, he reckons Bonjour isn't working. I know it is cos i can get AC7 to work no problem, Cheers, Jerry

@ riojazz - FYI - I have the same "Connecting" issue with both Mackie Controls I have set up when I start X1d - It's intermittent, but when it happens I have to do the same thing you do and go into Control Surface preferences to change "blank" to the corresponding connection - It also happened in X1c.

This is a long shot and I'm going to be at work all day so I wont be able to help until tommorow. Before I' am going to ask a dumb question, all my equipment is in storage so it makes life hard. Dumb question, you do press the Ney-Fi button in the neryik folder so when you look at the running programs you see a blue with N in it?? Ok failing that, downlaod a program called midi-ox, this will show you if you are reciving any midi controller messages. Also run a program called Midi-Yoke, it may just help the computer go Oh!!! http://www.midiox.com/ You will find both tools here. Failing that and let me know if this doesn't work I will work through the issue with you. You have gone into midi and turned ney-fi on as in and out as well, yea. Let me know and I will help you as much as I can over the next day or so. Neb

Thanks Gang... From all that's been said and my own compulsive nature, I somehow got everything working with AC7... I'm beginning to understand what happened, but I'm not sure why... I was not getting any midi input to AC7, only output, so I was miserably lost not seeing track names track/bus status etc. and I was stuck on a bus... ;-) So far this is feeling a much more elegant solution to my vocal booth remote control... Now back to the remote control already in process.......... Keni

I have iPad2 and AC-7, but didn't try with Sonar Yet. This Ney-Fi scares me ;) For me more options has more expensive Remote Control, or something - I have to see on iPad. I haven't found any Sonar map to TouchOSC, but developer mailed me that he will add SysEx support in upcoming update. I've seen TeeBee (or somrthing like this) after update has full SysEx support... For now I'm happy that I succeed MIDI connection between iPad and PC -> Sonar :) I have to ask Moog and Korg to do little MIDI upgrade, but Sunrizer, iMS-20 and Animoog are brilliant :)

I've been looking at this app as I just got a new Ipad"3". However, when I run Sonar I boot from a separate hard drive and that system has the NIC disabled so it's off line. This app uses Wi-Fi and unless I'm wrong this will not work on a DAW system that is never put on line. As I have a Tranzport and a BCF2000 I really don't need it unless the Tranzport craps out.

I have an idea of what Jerry may be doing wrong but since he is gone for a few day's wont know if it works. Rest assured guy's this program does work, it works better than AC7 Core, craps all over Behringer and any controller in the $2000 price bracket. I have the free version and when I can afford to get the "real" one I will be getting it, it does work so don't be nervous nellies on this. If anyone has any problems let me know and I will do my best to help. Now Andrew bout that prize PS Firebeard I'm not sure what your problem is explain it better, if it's about wireless, you can pick up a router for 60 bucks and your off. Peace Neb

Its not about a router (I have a wireless "N" router), its about not having a DAW system that is on line. There are many, that I've seen on here, mention that their DAW PC is never put on line, or only on line for certain updates/registration. Mine is the same way - I keep the NIC disabled, thus anything such as a controller that requires a network connection would be useless.
