Adjustable Height Desk
I've decided that I want an adjustable height desk for my laptop (and maybe one for my DAW if this goes OK.) (I mean one you can move up and down to either sit or stand, so it has to be quite adjustable...not just a few inches.) I've spent awhile looking online to see where you can buy the hardware to make the legs, something like this: http://www.closet-masters.net/consetheightadjustablemotorizedtwin501-17.aspx I found plans for an all-wooden one, but I think metal would be easier to use and by far easier to build. Anyone know where I could find something similar for under $100 (or far less, if possible?)

My coffee table in the living room - the one I'm using right now with my laptop, has a spring loaded top that raises about 18+ inches. it's fairly big, too, but it doesn't have an opening for your legs. of course when the table top is up it's not needed. I bought it a few years ago from lazy boy dealer. I don't remember how much we paid, but it was probably more than $100 and probably less than $300.

I can't figure out why in the world you'd need a coffee table to do that, but it looks pretty cool. :-) I think I/we will have to build this one, cause it's going in a closet, so not every desk will fit.

Check into drafting tables. I have an old wooden one that is adjustable over 8" in height, as well as the tilt top. Man, if I had my tools here, I could build one for you in a few hours. The key component is the slotted riser legs. If you know someone with a router, they are easy to make. Probably not a good chainsaw project.

I already told you. to use the laptop in the living room. my back would kill me if I didn't have this table top up nearer to my chest. that and to eat in the living room!

I wish you had your tools too, but not just so you could build me a desk. But I sure do appreciate the offer! :-) I saw a pattern for a wooden one online but it looks a bit complicated. Even with a chain saw. I figured if I could get the metal part the table top wouldn't be that difficult. But then, that's what I thought about Sonar and composing too. lol

There is hardware avaible on sites such as Rockler and other wood working sites but it ain't cheap.

Hey Janet. Since I moved to Canada, I was seriously contemplating the purchase of a computer desk to double for a TV when I finally decide to get one. I have been doing a lot of work at home at night on my Laptop and I had a small fold-able table I was using for my DAW computer. When my wife came up to visit, she brought up a bed frame, so we purchased a good mattress for it. Then we went to Lowes and I had a purchased a couple of plywood boards and cut it up for the foundation. I used the left overs to create speaker stands for my DAW. I also placed my LCD monitor up on the stand and the desktop underneath. Instead of purchasing a Desk, I ended up purchasing a Laptop cart and a wireless keyboard / mouse. Now I use the cart for my Laptop as well as for my Desktop and I use the fold-able table for my keyboard. I am no longer stuck with a particular configuration. I can now do so much more with the Laptop cart for doing work, watching DVD's or doing my music. I'll probably post some pics on FB this weekend.

I saw those laptop carts online and considered that. I think I'd like more desk space though. I'm curious to see your pictures. My son just suggested forgetting about the legs and putting the whole thing on a pulley system from the ceiling. Now that's an idea! :-)

Wouldn't it be much easier to get an adjustable height chair such as a drafting chair? I have one for my computer to DAW stations and it saves a lot of hassle. It adjusts from 25" to nearly 38".

Actually, I've been thinking about pulleys all day. lol Sometimes I'd rather stand up, as I get tired of sitting all the time.

What you actually want is for your son to build you a new computer-DAW workstation desk. Having a desk that changes height is rather bizarre when you can do it with a chair.

Well, I'm going to try it first on my regular non-DAW desk (just for my laptop.). I'm sure you've seen those ads for the desks that have treadmills you can walk on while working. (then you can lower it when you want to sit down.) It's supposedly really good for you. Anyway, I don't have room for that, but I can at least make it more comfortable to stand when I'm tired of sitting. I can invision something that raises and lowers with a simple lever or something. I'm sure somebody could do it. :-)

Yes it can be done, but the hardware isn't cheap. If you want something that raises and lowers the monitor so you can stand and still see, look into monitor mounts on articulating arms. Ergotron has some nice ones. Then put that adjustable chair right in front of it.

Actually, maybe you were saying this all along, but I just realized that if I get a tall chair, I can build the desk high and either stand at it or pull the chair over and sit at it. That would be the simplest thing if I can find the right chair. I believe we've got a monitor mount or two lying around anyway. Hmm. Thanks, Craig! :-)

If money were no object, I would buy one of these from Anthro. I've seen a few of their medical offerings, and I'd love to have one of their creative solutions... customize to your heart's content.

There ya go! Actually, a friend of mine found something similar at a garage sale. Well, it's not designed to be a desk, but it would work. My youngest son (the builder) suggested putting 4 drawer 'runners' vertically and run the desk top up and down on them. Then it dawned on me that my dad's a pro welder and part inventor. I bet he'd enjoy the challenge...I'll ask him.
