Alternatives to Soundforge?

Hi
I am a long time user of Soundforge to work on samples, fix misc stuff in audio takes, master...

Soundforge was sold by Sony to Magic corp.  I bought an amp sim from them ages ago and they never updated the software.  While I do not know it to be the case, I assume that they are going to "milk" soundforge and not reinvest in it.

What else is out there?  Wavelab is way more than I need.  And I was a Cubase user for a while (VST 5.1-Cubase 3) and got to hate the company for a lack of support.

I have tons of files from Soundforge, tho I think i have mostly rendered them to stereo audio tracks (at work and cannot look right now).

Thanks

I too am in the seemingly leaky Soundforge boat - keen to hear options.

I had an early version of Wavelab many years ago which I quite liked until Soundforge edged ahead with format support. Unless I am missing something Wavelab just seems massively overpriced now.

Thing about Soundforge, and I have Pro 11, is it does have some very decent features, batch processes, Meta tagging, CD Burning (through CD Architect) etc. It's going to take a pretty impressive program at a very good price to convince me to stop using it.

I suspect Magix will have to look at stuff like 64 bit processing if they're going to keep it relevant.. who knows, but for now, SF11 is still pretty powerful, so I'll stick with it for the time-being.

I actually still use CD Architect for burning as it is a separate program from Soundforge although they were packaged together.
Don't really remember how I re-installed it on new computer.
If anybody here with Sounforge needs help with that, I could probably dig up how I did it.

I'm still on an old SF.  You don't need to update if your version works; it is still the old loveable SF you always knew.

Thanks. My issue is that I have a new PC. I need the new sf install. I contacted majix to see, but I'm not sure of what obligation they have. Btw I don't see vandall on their site any longer. Bad sign for support.

Have you tried your Sony account https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/myaccount/home?returnToView=/myaccount/mysoftware? I just checked. All of my Sony purchases and serial numbers are still there. SF10 works fine on Win10 so I have not looked for a replacement.

I used Soundforge for a long time as well. but I came to point where I was wondering ..is it really helping me, or doing more than I can already do in Sonar ?
my answer was No.
now everyone is different so I don't expect everyone to feel the same way I do.

I was really only using it to clean up noise, exc. for that I use Izotope RX 5.
Soundforge used to be one of my main tools. I mean I used it to Master for a few years back in the early 2000's.
It has just kind of become dated compared to some of the other tools we have now.

I still find it useful. I rarely call it from SONAR but did write a couple of utilities to make that task easier. One allowing SONAR to run normally and still call SoundForge (which must be run as administrator), RunAsAdmin. The other is a graphical front end to edit the registry SONARToolsEditor. Both are available here http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3392713

I started with a download of Wave Lab 4 way back in time around 2001, upgraded to 5. But 5 would not run on W7 64 so I bought Wave Lab Elements7 for $99 CAN.
It's is all you really need. Not even sure what is missing compared to the full $600 version but I guess it's a bunch of fancy mastering plug ins.
I do have to use the Dongle but you can also use a software based eLicencer.
The dongle I actually great because I can swap it over to my Laptop without a hitch when I travel.

With Wave Lab, just like Sonar, you have to buy the MP3 encoder so I instead I bought Gold Wave for $59 lifetime upgrades. It comes with a great Batch convertor. It is actually a full featured editor but I'm just so used to Wave Lab it's hard to switch.
http://www.goldwave.ca/

I have a copy of Sound Forge ( lite?)  that came with my Sony USB turntable and I use that to rip Vinyl.   It gave me a chance to try Sound Forge but I still find the way Wave lab works superior.
I like the way Wave Lab lets you open processing tools like Gain and the tool box stays open after you apply. Most software the tool box has to be re-opened again.
So I have 3 Wave editors in my DAW.

Don't write off Magix. I've seen firsthand what's involved when one company buys another. The Roland/Gibson transition was unusually seamless, which in retrospect I think had a lot to do with both Roland and Henry Juszkiewicz wanting it to happen properly. However in many ways this was not the norm, and such transitions usually take longer to unfold and are more complex.

I was an expert witness for Magix once in a patent suit, they are a major force over in Europe and I suspect part of the Sony purchase was to establish more of a foothold over here. Magix has done well with their own video software but IMHO it's not quite up to the level of Vegas. So regardless of whether they develop Vegas independently or fold it into one of their programs, I suspect use Vegas users will be able to carry on with an evolving program. Now, if only they'd do lifetime updates...

As to Acid, I know of at least one other bid for it but it was rejected, so it seems Magix wants it...maybe to integrate more fully into video, I don't know. I have no idea what the plans are for Sound Forge. However...

I'm pretty much with Chuckebaby on this one. If you team up iZotope RX (and possibly Ozone) with SONAR, there's not much you can't do. More and more, I'm mastering in SONAR, and I keep pestering Cakewalk about how they could make SONAR a true mastering platform with what I think is not a lot of effort...we'll see what happens.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

+1 for iZotope's RX.
I use RX4 Advanced exclusively for editing - things like string squeaks, and various clicks and pops.
iZotope just keep making it better and better...

I have SoundForge 11 Pro and still use it, though no power user stuff here and never used it for CD burning.
(CD Architect was my primary "Red" burner for a long time, but Sony let that one slip away, so I moved to HOFA.)

Both RX and SoundForge are set up here to launch from Sonar's Utilities menu, which is a great way to edit from within Sonar...When it works, it's downright magical.
(Lately it's been working great, but RX and Sonar have been known to fight over the main audio driver...)

Goldwave was an early favorite, but I lost track of that one. The feature set for the price was outstanding.

Sonar Platinum (x64) on Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) running on ADK Pro Audio i7 (12-core), 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD(OS), (2) 2TB drives/(1) 1TB drive for storage, (1) WD Raptor 1TB Audio Drive, (1) UAD-2 OCTO, (2) UAD-2 QUAD, Lynx Aurora 16/AES16

I have a version of Soundforge that is likely 15 years old, it still works just fine.

I also have a more recent version of SoundForge on a different computer (both have a Win 10 operating system) and it also works fine.

The difference between the two programs other the being 10+ years apart for my uses is basically nothing.  They both have the same dated looking interface and work just fine.  This isn't like a DAW where innovation comes out every year nor does it need to.

It should be interesting to fire up.  This is far and away more than my old PC.

Soundforge comes in a cut down version called Studio which I believe is up to version 10. It sells for less than a $100 and works quite well, but is not 64-bit at last look. Wavelab has Elements which is approximately, again, at $100. I am unable to determine if it is 64-bit or not. I also don't know how much the Steinberg dongle is...

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left...

Hi,
The only knowledge with Soundforge I have is the demo ( which was one month full working if my memory is ok) and the lonely thing I could miss is the pencil with wich you could draw the soundwave, but like mentionned above,Sonar with the help of Izotope RX and some third parties stuff could normally in the hand of a skilled "sound-writer " with good ears and brain,be quite efficient to produce a top level soundtrack whether it is for video, game or music publishing..
It is my opinion and I'm in no way close to what a professionnal is.
All the best.
