Fess JenksTer Well folks, considering Sean Murray has been using X1 for the past year, you'd think any issues would be sorted by now. He must have the 'working' version, unlike the beta the rest of us have... Fess, Read your PM.

wormser Been using X1 for most of the day, just noodling around loading older projects, playing a little piano with Ivory II and so forth. No crashes for me yet but I haven't done any automation. I'm using the x64 version on Windows 7 with dual monitors. I find the interface interesting and easy on the eyeballs. Add my vote for a pdf manual. I take it there is no more "big transport" as the Control Bar takes it's place? Overall so far I like it. Kudos to the Cake team! I don't see a big transport there, but you CAN "float" the control bar itself if that works for ya. It can also be docked in other than the top area.

JonBouy love you're avatar. Installing a new version of Sonar is much like making love to a beautiful woman paul, first you have to unwrap it, then fire her up, once she is suitably warmed up you can 'insert' you're disk. Just remember not to shout Protools at the wrong moment :)

daveny5 You should upgrade to Windows 7. Its much better than any version of XP. ...TOTALLY true... SONAR X1 runs SMOOTH on Windows 7... Fast, no glitches, no crashes... working with it is a nice and comfortable experience... INDEED... if it wasn't for that "not-that-much-customizable" affair, especially in comparison to the great flexibility of the previuos (great) v8.5, which is my only real complaint by now, SONAR X1 would be (almost) a masterpiece...

I'm running Vista 64 and it works absolutely great. No glitches or crashes. X1 works just as great (if not better) than that other extremely popular - "not so customizable" DAW.

Seth Perlstein [Cakewalk ] ...I notice the same thing with what we've done with the Skylight interface. For years people have been screaming for a new GUI. Now we give it to them and then some by not only making the GUI look better, but also function better, and still some people complain about that... ...not exactly the point... people were asking for a new, IMPROVED/MODERN GUI, nevertheless STILL based on SONAR... not (almost) TOTALLY different, as it turned out to be, especially if not that much customizable...

gtgarner gothic.angel ...not exactly the point... people were asking for a new, IMPROVED/MODERN GUI, nevertheless STILL based on SONAR which is X1. NOT indeed ... but ONLY someway... in the end... In fact, as I stated before (without your omissis...), far as the "customization" issue, it turned out to be a BRAND NEW GUI... LESS customization (toolbars, colors...) means a LOSS, thus it CAN'T BE seen as an IMPROVEMENT...

mudgel I'll say it again. SONAR X1 is not a new piece of software. It might have a new naming convention but its built on the code that came before it; that is SONAR 8.5 , 8, 7 etc. There's been some code added and some modified and perhaps even some removed but it's not a new program it's only the latest release. You've seen the code have you? How do you know this?

You've seen the code have you? How do you know this? I get to see the old code everytime I access one of the new menus when I see the old Plugin Manager window, In the new Preferences menu it too accesses all the old dialog boxes, colors, Hotkeys, Track manager and on and on and on. The interface connects to the old dialogs that have been there for years. 14 months is not long enough to have written SONAR X1 from the ground up. We're still accessing the same information just from different menus and sometimes presented in a different manner eg the browser. Its great but it accesses info that was always there in SONAR before - they're just showing it to us differently and sometimes that's enabled them to add a little new functionality. So I'll say it again, its still the same code underneath. that does't mean there's been no work done nor does it mean that X1 is no good but don't make the mistake that just because the interface is so new that everything underneath must be new too.

Definitely not a complete rewrite, agreed. Some other telltale signs: Old bugs are still there. The installation folder (still a complete mess by the way) looks almost identical in structure to 8.5 and has several old files that still get dumped in it. These are obviously carryovers from previous versions. Also, they still have the 37 MB of bitmaps in TTSRES which includes all the bitmaps from X1 plus all those that have ever been in Sonar since ProAudio days. Almost every new feature in X1 is just a rewrite of a feature that was in 8.5. Also I am thinking a true rewrite would be much smaller in MB. People out there are writing very competitive DAW environments feature wise that weigh in at 5 and 10 MB as opposed to still over 100 for Sonar. Not passing any judgment either, just stating some facts here. They obviously have dome some surgery to change windows from MDI to SDI mode (looks that way to me). There is so much in common underneath though, that it is just obviously not a complete rewrite - just a reorganization of interface for better or worse, with a couple cool tricks thrown in. The only thing I have to say bad about using old code is, why did they remove some of the best parts?! D.

Caryovers from previous versions? Perfect. Previous versions were great. So take 8.5 - rewrite it - into a better GUI. What more can you ask for. I've got plenty of HD space. Bring it on Cakewalk.
