An annoying non stop high tone when i run Sonar
Another week, another problem. I wish there was just 1 week where i could use my soft and hardware without troubles... Anyway, my latest: When i start Sonar now i suddenly get a really annoying loud non stop beep. As with most of my problems this started out of nowhere...no cables changed, no hardware, no software. One day to the other this started happening. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you add any plug-ins recently, like a demo plug-in? If not, then you should run a full anti-virus scan. Is it coming from the OctaCapture? Does it happen with the OctaCapture unplugged?

No new plugins. No new added software. It only happens when i start Sonar. No clue if it's the octa capture itself or the software. I do know that i only happens when Sonar is running.

Ok, if i run the stand alone Guitar Rig software it also happens. So as soon as something triggers my octa capture this happens. I reinstalled the drivers. Didn't change anything.

That's the audio engine, Does it go away when you disable it? First, use headphones to trouble shoot to rule out bad connections elsewhere. Start from the beginning , Computer off. Listen to the Octa capture from the headphone jack. You probably will hear nothing there with the computer turned off. Turn on the computer and play a song with Windows Media or Win Amp. Open another DAW and listen. Then open Sonar. I had this exact problem with a M Audio Fast Track Pro. It was in the A/D converters or something. So I ended up using the SPDIF and it was dead quiet.

go into windows device manager and disable built in sound card and any aftermarket video card if you installed one. report back. might have been automatic update in background.

Didn't see your second post as I was typing same time. So that points to it sourcing from the audio engine and possible bad A/D converters. Is it under warranty?

Make sure you are not getting some sort of internal feedback loop from internal monitoring capabilities on your sound card. I was getting a similar problem occasionally and when I turned off the monitoring on my Dakota card, it stopped.

I tried disabling the internal sound card...didn't change anything. It worked with the sound card on before anyway. If i check headphone only it also happens. So it's not the monitors or sub. A bad a/d converter...can that just happen from one day to the other?

It was in my situation. I traced it back to a day that I had used the Phantom Power option on the M Audio. I think it did something to the A/D converters. My sound was a hi frequency scream in the background,,, very low but there when you had silence in the room. It was also recorded to audio tracks. The only way you can prove otherwise is to try a different audio interface. I was lucky I had 2. The scream disappeared with the other interface. So I used it with SPDIF and my Yamaha 01v digital mixer and it was fine. So it was defiantly something in the analog circuits. We were typing same time again, So how can you hear it with the octa capture off?? You must be using your on board.

Does the scream show up in a recording? Maybe it's an acoustic sound generated by your computers hardware.

I had a problem with a high-freq whine that I traced down to RF interference from putting a JV-1080 right below the PC in the rack. Probably not what's happening to you but a thought that may help someone.

Arrgh, i'm pretty sure i turned off onboard sound...but if my octa is turned off it must be the onboard sound right? I have a wireless device but it's not installed. Just the card plugged in. I'm gonna check the onboard sound again.

The onboard soundcard is disabled in the bios! So that's disabled and the octa is turned off. Yet i still get the beep as soon as i load any software that uses sound.

I would run an AntiVirus and Malware scan immediately. It could also be an alarm warning you that your CPU may be overheating or perhaps your SSD or an external drive that is failing. I would disconnect all external devices (USB, Firewire, thumb drives, etc.) and see if it still happens. Process of elimination.

How the heck can you hear any sound if you have both the octa capture and your on board turned off??? What are you hearing the sound from??? What are your monitors plugged into? This is why I mentioned it could be nothing to do with your audio system and is a mechanical sound from your computers hardware. Dave,,, why on earth would running an anti virus scan solve this issue????

Dave,,, why on earth would running an anti virus scan solve this issue???? I read about a beep virus that makes your computer beep continuously. Check YouTube.

I have no clue how that's possible. But i can guarantee you that that's the case. The speakers still pick up this beep for some reason. Even if a try to play an mp3 or something. As soon as something wants to use the sound the speakers start beeping. I have no sound whatsoever now anymore. This is so bad...

I would try enabling your soundcard again in the bios, there's no need for that unless your back in the xp days. open sonar and go to drivers, select MME instead of asio, this will eliminate the Roland as your issue. watch a few you tube vids or even try media player to listen to some tunes, still there??? disable wireless card I think cactus said that, its a good idea. does sound like a demo software giving you the beeps. how often are the interval's of the beeping ?

A DAW on the internet? Bad Idea ... but thanks Dave for clearing that up, you usually have good tips but I thought this one was kinda weird. I still don't understand how you can hear it when you turn off your interface. That's the only thing you said so far that throws me off. The onboard soundcard is disabled in the bios! So that's disabled and the octa is turned off. Yet i still get the beep as soon as i load any software that uses sound. So your saying this is a computer beep coming from the little CPU speaker??

No, not the cpu speaker. The monitors. Both of them. They pick up the noise with the sound cards turned off. As weird as it may sound i can guarantee you 100% that that is the case.
