And Life Goes On (Dance/House/Techno)

I haven't posted in this area for awhile, so forgive me for barging in, so to speak.

This is my latest track (1/7/12).  It's EDM /Dance/House.  So if you're not into that kind of music -- well, listen anyway LOL.

But seriously ...  I like this track, personally, and hope those of you who like EDM and take a listen will like it too.

Enjoy.  "Life Goes On ..."

It's also #1 on my regular music site.

Normally, when I listen to a dance song I'm bored within the first minute.  However, in this case I enjoyed the track from beginning to end.  The mix is terrific, and the choice of instruments were well thought out.  I'm just curious what elements went into this recipe.

    All the best,

    Lynn,

Thanks for listening and I take it as a huge compliment when someone who is not normally into EDM/Dance music likes my work.  I had a really good time making this track. Things just seem to come on their own, so to speak.

I'm happy you think the mix is terrific because I just had my work area revamped and it took awhile to get things back to normal (the whole room got updated --- new paint job, different seating, etc.)  As we all know, we have to have a work environment we can trust to make critical mixing decisions.

As for the elements ... it actually is somewhat of a big project due to a lot of layering I did.

The drums are Maschine - all freshly played parts in this track, though I did use one pre-recorded loop to enhance/layer the groove.

Their are a number of synths, some being: Harmless, Z3ta+ v2 (actually there are a few instances of it in this particular track), Corona, Absynth, Korg M1, and a few more (I'd have to pull up the project to remember every one).

I should also say that ProChannel played a big role throughout the development of this track.  I normally use a lot of 3rd party plugins, especially on drums and mixing, but in this track it's about 80% Pro Channel.

I have some issues with the user interface (ie, things I would like to see improved or changed), but the sound is really what matters most, and I was able to get the sound I wanted on a lot of the tracks in the project very quickly using Pro Channel elements.

Well, again, I thank you for your compliments and for taking the time to listen.  I'm very happy you enjoyed the track, and I hope you were dancing at least a little

BTW, I should add that I never expect anyone on this Sonar Song Forum to like EDM, it's generally not the audience that visits/hangs out here, and Sonar is not normally 'known' for its EDM track record.

But I hope tracks like this change that perception a little bit.

Sonar is a very capable DAW for EDM, for those who didn't think so

I love it that you used a Korg M1.  Mine is packed away with a dead battery, or I would still be using it myself.  Thank you for answering my question.

Lynn,  The M1 I used on this track is the VST plugin version, not the hardware version (though I, too, loved my hardware M1 for a long time).

    Billy,
I am a Classic Rock guy, but I really like the sound you were able to get on this.
I really like the way that you transitioned from one section to the next.
With the sound scape always changing, there was no problem holding my interest throughout.
Your mix and instrument placement sounded excellent.

I'm with Lynn, I get bored with this music really fast. It took me to 1/3 the way through when everything picked up more that I was not so bored anymore.

    The mix is really good.

I've been to clubs that played this stuff and your tune would fit right in.

    Very well done.

Billy I really don't listen to much of this music these days and  haven't been to that type of club in a decade or so but it sounds great.  Well written, great transitions and certainly danceable!  I am sitting here listening and thinking sh*t!  With the right lyrics and a decent vocal hook this could be a hit?  I kinda feel like trying to write something to it for ya just for fun.   Idunno how I'd do though... residual teenage punker angst from a thirty something and dance music may not mix so well.  But great job here bro!

I'm not much into this genre Billy, but I have the speakers cranked and the mix is nice and it's pumping out a clear, low end! I just put up a bit more auralex to deaden the room a little more, so, you're my first test!!

Loved it. Though for EDM, it has way too many changes.
    The only nit:
kick cold use just a hint more distortion, and that shaker thing is too loud...I would bring it back a db.

The mix comes across very well here good thumping bass, kick though, as noted, perhaps a little more squelch would be nice.

THanks for listening and the comments James.  I'm never religious about styles, meaning -- having too many changes for EDM doesn't really bother me :)  I'm not a purist about such things.  And I think that's what gives one an individual character/sound/style, etc. BUT, I think you are right about the shaker (another friend felt the same thing).   I just redid my work area and it was painted, and moved things around, so I may have to do some more "tuning" in the room.

Thanks again and glad you liked/loved it :)

Mate i'm impressed - This is awesome. Your mix is clean as a whistle and very current. I'm still workin on getting this kindov sound on my tracks - I make electronica/dance/pop. But i'm not there yet. Dance music seems today to be more about the highs than the lows in the mix. Bass has been replaced by huge sweeping white noise and frequency sweeping - I love it but just can't nail it yet. But you do!

I love the drop at 4.04. It's subtle but really nice. Everything is happening all over the place - it's like walking into a room full of beautiful colours.

    And yeah I was dancin.

Maybe I need some pointers from you on how to get that big dance floor sound. My stuff isn't as 'dancey' as this, as I have vocals and take my influence from more pop/electronica/emo but the genres all over lap and i'd love to learn.

Great tune - and good to find another making similar music to me here.

Really great clean sounding production. Interesting from beginning to end, I enjoyed all timbres used. I'd have to agree, shaker could come down a tad.

Howdy, Daylaa.... I'm glad you liked :)

As I said in another post, I'm not a purist - meaning I don't stick to any particular set of rules when it comes to style.  I think if one is going to make original music (or try to), then one shouldn't worry about being a purist at all.

If one wants to compete directly with those already doing a particular style and fit neatly into the 'bin', so to speak, then following the rules can matter.  I just don't take that approach with this type of music.

As for getting the sound ...  there are some things I think always make a difference.  One being compression.  Learning how to use it (and if necessary abuse it, lol) is important.  And of course learning how to get the most mileage out of EQ'ing is so important too.

I'm no master, that's for sure.  But there are some great books, great resources available to everyone these days.

Just keep listening, exploring, learning and things can and do happen.

BTW. a you've probably noticed, the Sonar forums are not filled with a lot of techno/dance/modern music lovers (or makers); With all my years of being involved in these Sonar forums I'd say it's mostly rock-oriented users. Ableton Live, Cuebase, Fruity Loops and a few other forums tend to pull more of the modern music makers it seems. But there are lot of great minds on the forum.  Knowledge is important.  And having a good understanding of the basics and having roots is important too. And this forum definitely has a wealth of knowledgeable users, to say the least.

Thanks for listening and your comments Ohgrant.  Hmm, it seems there's a consensus on the shaker coming down a bit ;)  I personally didn't feel that (not sure I do yet), but I'm going to revisit the mix anyway now that I've been away from it for a few days.

We all know how our opinions/feelings change after some time away from a mix lol.

But first impressions are important and I've gotten 3 comments (2 here and 1 from another friend) about the shaker, so maybe I need to listen differently!

Thanks and I'm glad you liked it too!

JUst as an update to this track ..

I did a remastering (slightly diff mix as well) with the shaker down a tad and I think this might just put this to bed for now.

Thanks to everyone for listening and commenting.

It's still the first slot at my regular music site (in my signature) for those who want to listen to the revised mix/master.

    Thanks.

Well I am with the rest of the posters here mate in that it's not really my kind of music although I do dabble in dance music myself but mine is always weird.

I had a friend who wrote this stuff all the time and I find tricks and beat get in the way of good melody or there is no melody.

I suppose I am showing my old fuddy duddy ways and would prefer dance producers and electronic music makers to understand our great western classical tradtion, then I am happy for tricks and beat to compliment dance music.

Just an old fuddy duddy's opinion.

    Peace Ben

PS, keep it up all music has it's place because music is sooo subjective in terms of opinion.
