OT a little, but as long as we're talking about sports commentators, I do wish they all would learn the meaning of the work "crescendo".  Hint: it does not mean "climax".


One starts to question which school of journalism P.E. (Physical Education) they actually attended to be so confident in using these terms. The sad part is, with the continuous useage of incorrect terms on a regular basis, people start to use it like it was a direct quote from the dictionary and the dumbing down process begins.

The sports commentators are a breed of its own, for sure. It would be nice if they could pronounce the athletes names properly. Some here are reasonably good.

As Olympics are on: How many sports commentors have you heard pronounce correctly the olympic motto, Citius, altius, fortius? It is maybe the best known latin phrase in the world after all, and something a professional sport journalist should know.
In classic latin it's [kitius], not [sitius]. I can't imagine/know all the various ways those words can be mispronounced in different languages, but in finnish they pronounce the other two wrong as well.

This is how I was taught as well.  But I've since learned that there a different "schools" of Latin pronounciation.  Northern Europe seems to have gravitated toward the "c" as "k" school.  But having learned Italian pronunciation (for singing Verdi, et al), I'm thinking far more likely that the Romans did not use that pronunciation.
 
I learned that "circa" was pronounced "kirka".  I'd bet money, however, that the real deal was "cheerka".  In the case of citius, I'd be inclinded to think "cheeteeus" would be the authentic version.
