I am now hearing tons of glorious bass! Perfect to my ears! If you did not change it then I was mistaken about the bass lacking in this tune. :) Nice depth and balance.

Perfect composition! It might just be my ears or monitors, but it seems a bit more overall warmth on the bass end might give it more depth. Add some kind of sliding bass down there and cut it out in softer sections.

Still nice just the way it is too. :)

Thanks for listening! Not sure more bass is needed, but I'll take a look...

Dan

You know I thought it started kinda slow, but the build up was worth it and the guitar sounded perfect with it.  Really nice track.

Knowing your style, I'm sure you did, lol. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comments!

It starts off as a delicate work, and then becomes more intense around 2:30.  Nicely done.  I liked the mood of the composition.  The mix sounded excellent.

"How to Hold Interest for 4:26" by Dan Cumpian!  This is well conceived and well produced. That little pause before the boom boom and the guitar was a nice touch. And the mix was stunningly clear as per your usual. A real pleasure for the ears and brain.

The piano is the feature and it's perfect, a balance between the woodyness and the clarity of tone. Was that a Quantum Leap piano, or which? Sounded great. How did you reverb it?

The electronic elements added a lot without overwhelming anything.

Those big drums are really well panned, lots of natural movement going on. Killer.

I would be very tempted to find a way in this excellent balance to feature a moment for the bass guitar, maybe a fretless bass, a run of some type. You have the bass going on with some very tasteful figures in the first minute, then it's in the pocket for the rest of the piece.  If anything is coming up on the light end with this, it's the bass. But let's face it, more bass = less headroom for everything else, so really I wouldn't screw with it too much.

That was a very cool and subtle delay on the violin!

I listened several times and it got better each time. Marvellous job.

Keyscape...a truly great piano tone there.

And no midi loops. Every note was played by me. I will say that S1 handles midi recording a bit tighter than Sonar did. I found that I didn't need to quantize nearly as much and I think that adds a lot of natural breathing to the drums.

What you are hearing is the 7th (!) mix. Tried more bass and other bass elements and it just didn't work as well. Adding a bass pad here and there may have helped, but I'd already spent too long on this project and wanted to be done, lol.

Dan,

Great separation and clarity. Nice melodies..... you really know how to shape moods with sounds which is a "sense" that's really a gift from above that you have worked and refined over the years.

Are you gonna press on with Studio One for most of your projects or are you going back to Sonar?

Thank you Craig!  I really appreciate your comments!

I'll likely stick with S1 for now, mostly because I've got it setup to work the way I want and I have not has a single issue with it. I miss a few things from Sonar, but the more I use S1, the less that happens.

Exquisite, Dan. Really nicely balanced, evolves very organically and smoothly; and kicks into a more forceful arrangement at the exact right moment.

If I were to offer up the slightest of quibbles about the arrangement, I might consider pulling the guitar solo back a wee bit around the 3:20 mark. It's a great part, but it overwhelmed the arrangement for a little bit, at that point, I think. Very minor issue, though. I really like this piece. Great work, as always.

Hey Dan, yeah the feedback at that short passage. For what it's worth, it was the one element that briefly pulled me out of the pure enjoyment of the song. It drew too much attention to itself, and sort of intruded on the listening experience. Just my own personal thoughts on the matter, and others may not have the same reaction.

It was an instinctive reaction on my part, and I'd figured you'd want to know. Of the many things I like about your music, one of the elements that most stand to me are your really lovely arrangements and mixes. I like how you layer in details and textures in your songs -- subtle percussive bits there, a perfectly integrated bit of solo vocals there, etc -- and you have a real knack for knowing when to expand the arrangement, and step-up (or down) the intensity. Your stuff is always really polished, in that regard -- to my ears, anyway -- and Angel Rising has that same deft touch. So, the short bit I mentioned stood out to me, because it was just a wee bit out of step with the rest of the arrangement and mix, and that caught my attention right away.

Hope you don't mind me going on about it :) I consider it a very minor issue in an otherwise really nice bit of work.

Thanks for listening and your comments Robert! If I'm not mistaken, you are referring to the guitar feedback? If so, yeah, it gets right in your face. I'm of two minds about it...

Regards,
Dan

I don't mind at all. My two minds is that, on the one hand, I do get excactly what you are saying. On the other hand, that's one angry angel...

Dan

When I saw the title, and who it was from, of course I had high expectations.   And... I'd say you met them 100%.

Seriously, for me that was a complete work - composition, arrangement and mix.  I liked how the guitars glided over top of the music, sort of like the backwards parts in Ripples (Genesis).   That simple but effective piano figure just locked it all together, and for a very cinematic instrumental it had great clarity.
