Just returned from business trip and was surprised to see all the nice comments on this song thread.  Must be a lot of L&M fans.

Danny - Really appreciate your help on this one, as you mention, some of it was OK but you really cleaned up the bottom end.  It was really a mess prior to your help.  When I A/B my original to the mix with your suggestions the result is night and day.  Really outstanding input and thanks again.

Dan - Thanks for the comment, it was tough and fun at the same time.   Appreciate you listening.

FreddyJ - Glad you like the song even though not a L&M fan.  Appreciate your comments on the instrumentation.   I am sure the Vox were tough too but I only had to mix them, not record and sing them;)

Alkie/Alan - Thanks, glad you like it.

Pete - Appreciate your comment.   Not a million dollar studio, just my home office, unfortunately;(   I really like the sound of the 70's recordings and all the groups you mention, and was shooting for that target.  Thanks for listening.

Manny - Appreciate the comment.   I am sure Robby has framed your comment about the vocals over his computer monitor;)  Overwhelming is a good description.  I am not sure what prompted L&M to turn the song into a 7:40 jam but it is a cool song.  Seemingly they had a lot of instruments laying around the studio they wanted to add to the mix;)   Glad you like it,  Dirty Work would be a good song to cover, just listened to it for reference.   Maybe we'll do it.  I have another Van Halen cover in the works and have started on Money by Pink Floyd.   At some point I would like to post some originals but am working on mixing skills right now.  So many good songs to learn from I am hesitant to post originals until I can do them justice.  Thanks again.

Regards

Hey Mark and Robby,

Been away from the forum for a couple of weeks so I'm late to the party, but this phenomenal cover of a great classic is total ear candy!

Spectacular musicianship by both of you, and the production work on this is out of this world.  Amazing detail in the performances, and pro quality clarity and texture in the great sounding mix.

Excellent collab, guys, top notch all the way around!

Yeah :-) I did the brass and the organ! It's an honor to work with a musician and engineer as talented as Mr. no999, Mark is the man, and I was lucky to have been given the opportunity. I'm hoping we have a few more left in us. Thanks Leizer.

Very nice mix!  Very classic sounding.  I hear every instrument, but what's even greater, is I hear it as if it were off a 1970's LP saved to a nice Chome II tape!  :-)

Not over mastered (or as I coined some years back, 'Smashtered') or over compressed.

Excellent separation on everything.  Hey, that's not Ron Burgundy on the flute?  ;-)

If you are trying to stay true to the era, Don't TOUCH IT!
If, however, you wanted to bring it into 2013, then a little high-end sweetening with some BBE or Aural Exciter or PSP-WARMER on the entire mix (or carefully, at the mastering stage), you'd enter this century.  Should you?  No rules say you have to.

Best to you!  Will be sure to look for more of your mixes as they pop up.  Nice going!  (Never heard the tune, either, so that was a nice treat alone!)

Be well,
As Always,
FR

You need to understand Mr. No999 (the mix master) he lays down over the top of a mix and changes color? (until you can't see him) I like to do the same thing as an artist :-) But he can do it both as an artist, and as an Engineer... So I will guarantee you that in fact, he listened carefully to the original, then "A/B'ed it." And tweaked it, until A was as close to B as he could get it :-) He's really good at that... Thanks FR! We were going for a tribute version

Scott -  Thanks for the comment.  Appreciate it.   Enjoying your Christmas CD this afternoon.

Old55 - Thank you, appreciate your listening.  I am glad we did one of your favorite L&M tunes up to expectation.

Leizer - Thanks, appreciate it.   The brass and organ are Kontakt samples.   I am pretty impressed with most of them...

Olemon - Thanks, the guitar parts were a lot of fun.   Got to try out my new Line6 HD500 on this one.    L&M have an alternate tuning on this song which took me a while to figure out.   Two E strings are tuned down to D.

Bob - Good to hear from you.   Appreciate it.  Couple more 70's covers in the works, then heading to the 80's;)

Daryl - Thanks for the listen.  There are some nice live videos of L&M on YouTube that are fairly recent.   They have a spectacular band.

Clint - Thanks.   We were going for a vintage 70's sound so glad we accomplished that.   Using Waves Kramer Tape and SSL Console/SSL Bus Compressor on this one.  I think it gives it a nice analogue feel.

FR - Thanks, I know what you mean about over-compression, did it for years.    I may err on the side of too little compression as a result;(   Appreciate your comments on the mix, it was a bit of a challenge but very educational.   We were going for a vintage sound but I get your suggestion for a more 2013 sound.      Might be interesting to try it out.   Thanks again.

Regards

I had the good fortune to have heard L & M do this live several times, so I know this song well.  Your have done your homework in regards to getting most of the nuances of the original in your cover.  The mixing and mastering is super.  Unfortunately, the passion of the performances don't quite translate for me.  I don't hear the anger.  In spite of the incredible skill that went into this, it's a little "paint by numbers" sounding to me.  However, if one has never heard the original, this would be a masterpiece.

All the best,
Lynn

It's because Mark is the man, and I try. So it's a little too perfect...

I like those numbers though ;-) It's like a winning lottery ticket! (I think my saxes and hammond were at least pretty ticked off, if not angry?) Not bad for a couple of guys who met on-line :-D I would still like to buy Mr. Markno a beer one day, he's one of my hero's...

My hero's,

1. Mr. Markno999
2. Mr. Tanton
3. Mr Timaaaaaaaaaaay
4. Mr. James Yoyo YO YO YO!

All are masters at their craft... All are people we should all look up to and try to emulate. I want to be them when I grow up, but I doubt that will ever happen? If you're not on this list, get off your arse and make it happen. I will never be on this list... But if I can get close? I'll be happy :-)

Thanks for listening and commenting Lynn.

Lynn-Appreciate the listen and comment.  The song is absolutely "paint by numbers" as you point out, as are most of the postings I have done.   My primary focus has been mixing and not necessarily creativity or performance, although I recognize both are an important aspects of how the overall mix is perceived.  At some point I will start on some originals and more creative new stuff.  I may even have some "angry" performances queued up;) For now will stick with covers.  Thx

RobertB -  Thanks for the comment.   Appreciate the listen and glad you like it.

If I were king of the forest? I would pull back some of the guitars in my left ear, and or pull back a bit of their attack? I've listened many times ;-) Merry Christmas Mark!! To you and yours.

BUT! I'm getting new buds tomorrow as I don't have the rubber thingy that goes around the little speaker right now? So don't take anything I say as Gospel? But I throw it out there anyway.
